I am Death - Part 10

The view of the battlefield was terrifying. There were maybe half as many Deaths, as Felons.

I tried not to let this faze me, and nodded at Sandra, and we immediately stepped into action.

At first, the Felons didn't seem to realize that their population was decreasing. Then, they started to realize that there were arrows and bullets aimed for them, and they eventually found us.

Although it had taken a while for the Felons to figure it out, Sandra and I had taken out maybe 19 of them, at most, but there were still hundreds of them left.

And I was also running out of arrows.

While I hid behind my wings, I was able to pick up 8 more arrows, and I saw Sandra do the same with her bullets. We made eye contact, and I saw her mouth "Cover me." I knew what she meant - we couldn't just hide and not fight back. She used her fingers to count down. Three. . .two. . . one.

The two of us fired at the other's Felons, and we grinned at our successful plan. However, the celebration was short-lived.

We found ourselves surrounded, and we were forced to hide behind our wings. I closed my eyes, trying to come up with another plan, when I heard the Felons start shouting.

I dared to lower my wing, and saw the Deaths from the Weapon Room fighting...with wings. I grinned, until I realized that I was now vulnerable to anything that came my way.

The grin faded, as I saw someone standing a foot away from me. My mouth went dry as he got ready to shoot his arrow at me, when he suddenly fell to the ground.

Surprised, I leaned forward, and saw a bullet sinking into the man's side. I looked to my right, and grinned again.

"Are you really going to just sit there, smiling like an idiot?" the SD from the Weapon Room said as she walked over to me.

I got up, impressed. "What made you believe me?" I asked, as I bent down to pick up the Felon's arrows.

She shrugged, as she shot at someone to the left. "I don't know." She started walking away.

"Wait!" I said. She turned, and quickly shot at someone behind me.

She gave me a pointed glance. "Yes?"

"Um, what's your name?" I asked, feeling a bit stupid to be asking this while we were in the middle of a battlefield, as I aimed for someone behind her.

"Sabrina. Sabrina Duncan." She paused, as she shot at someone above us. "What's yours?"

"Um, Isabelle Daniels," I said, as I aimed for a flying Felon. I forced myself not to grin as I saw him fall.

She nodded at me. "Maybe we can meet after we win?"

I nodded back. "Yeah. Sure." Then she walked away for real this time. I sighed, as I placed all the arrows in my sack, making sure the old and new ones were all in there.

I looked around, looking for another Felon, when I saw him. "Daniel," I muttered under my breath, readying my bow to shoot at him. Except, at the same moment I let go, he turned his head, and our eyes met.

I stomped my foot angrily, knowing he would just block it with his wing. I flew up to him as fast as I could, surprisingly dodging all weapons. Pretty soon, I was at eye level with him.

"Daniels!" he crowed, spreading his arms wide, as if to embrace me. "How have you been?"

I ignored him, reaching for an arrow instead. "None of your business. . . Daniel," I growled, aiming my bow at him.

He laughed. "Oh, Daniels. You know I can block your arrows. You'll just waste them."

I forced myself to not shoot him, because I knew he was right. "Then I hope you'll think the same way," I replied, hoping my voice wasn't shaking. "You'd be wasting your bullets as well."

He chuckled. "I know, I know," he said, holding his hands up as if to surrender. "I just wanted to talk, Daniel to Daniels." He grinned at the name play, but I ignored him, instead thinking on how I could trick him.

"You know," he said, crossing his arms, "with the way you look right now, I might find myself breaking the Death Laws, right now."

"You're not a Death!" I spat, as I shot someone aiming for me. "You're a Felon."

He shrugged. "Does it really matter? All I'm saying is, you look a lot better in your Natural Death Form."

I rolled my eyes, while I reached for another arrow. "Flattery won't change anything," I said flatly. I felt something hit against my wing, and I quickly spun around, shooting the attacker. Then I quickly spun back, remembering Daniel behind me.

He sighed, staring at me. "You know, I think it's rude of you to kill my friends when I'm not killing any of yours."

I laughed humorlessly. "Well, I don't. Especially since you ordered the Felons here to kill my friends!"

He shook his head. "You know, I think you and I would've gotten along terrifically if you were a Felon."

Was he joking? "Oh, yeah. Definitely," I replied sarcastically. "But I guess we'll never find out." I shot another arrow at a Felon.

Daniel must've noticed, because he asked, "How can you even tell who's a Felon, and who's not?"

I stared at him. "You mean, you've just been shooting at random Deaths?"

He shrugged. "Well, I know what the difference is for me. I just want to know if they're the same."

I rolled my eyes. "We glow. You guys don't. The end." Maybe that was why Sabrina hadn't actually shot me in the Weapon Room.

He nodded, looking impressed. "Really? It's the same for me too. . . that's interesting."

Ugh. Why was I talking to him? "Why are you talking to me?" I asked, shooting at a Felon attacking a Death. "Why aren't you talking to Delton, or something?"

Daniel made a facial expression I couldn't recognize. "Dennis is dead," he said simply. "One of my men shot him."

Oh. I'd always resented him for forcing me in school, but now I felt a little guilty that he died. Like it was my fault. Then, I found myself glaring angrily at Daniel. No, this was all his fault for putting that love spell on me! Not bothering to put it in the bow, I threw the arrow at his face, while he was sidetracked.

Unfortunately, his wing suddenly went up, and the arrow bounced off of it harmlessly. Schist.

I glanced up at him, and he looked pissed. I got ready to block myself, but he didn't aim at me. Instead, he shot at someone behind me. I turned to see who it was, and my eyes widened.

"Sandra!"
