I am Death - Part 1

I glanced at my DeathWatch, checking the time. It was 8:55 am, which meant there was only a minute left. Yes!

I felt the weight of the arrows on my back, and my bow appeared in my left hand. I grinned to myself, reaching back for the Heart Attack arrow, thanking the CDs for being so reliant.

I carefully placed the arrow into the quiver of my bow, aiming carefully at the 56-year old man sitting in his room, watching something on TV.

There was a closed window separating us, but that didn't matter. Nothing could stop a Death Arrow.

As soon as my watch rang 8:56 am, I let go, watching my arrow fly through the air, passing through the window like it wasn't there, until it landed on his deathspot.

The man dropped to the floor, clutching his chest. He was now dead. I didn't bother sticking around to see what would happen - it was always the same.

Someone would find the person, scream, call 911, try to get the person to wake up, then scream for anyone else. Sure enough, I heard a scream 23 seconds later, from a woman with hair curlers in her hair. His daughter? She looked to be in her 20s. I probably could've figured it out, but a beeping from my watch distracted me.

Name: Addison Lawson
Age: 37 years old
Date: May 19, 2016
Cause: Lung Cancer
Time: 11:53 pm

I sighed, slightly annoyed that my next victim would be in around 15 hours. I flipped my watch shut, waiting for my weapons to disappear before I could go back.

Right after they disappeared, I heard the sirens of an ambulance. Although I knew it was the same procedure, I still walked towards it, staring at the man, now lifeless, on the stretcher.

I would've gone closer if the woman that found him hadn't walked through me. I shivered, and stepped back quickly. During times like these, Deaths were invisible to mortals, and couldn't feel or hear them.

Sighing, I headed back to the wall, where no one was around, like it should've been. Whenever a Death needed to use a DeathPortal, mortals would suddenly find themselves wandering away, and security cameras would automatically shut down if we came within 10 feet of them. This was also the job of CDs.

I flipped my watch back open, tapping on the computer app. "Isabelle Daniels. I need to get back to school." It wasn't long before someone replied.

"Get ready to jump in 3 seconds," he said. I snapped it shut again, before jumping through the wall, and back onto the grass in front of the wall I jumped through from my school.

I glanced at my watch, which looked normal with the lid down. It was 9:00 am, which meant I had to go to second period. I groaned, forcing myself to room 222 for Chemistry.

Even as I forced myself up the stairs, I still didn't understand why I had to attend school. It wasn't like I'd been attending since schools first formed. It was actually since 2014, 2 years ago.

I had just finished off 4 people in a row, so I was very annoyed when I didn't find myself jumping into my house. (The human traits for IDs were annoyance and impatience.)

"Why did you bring me here?" I asked the person sitting behind a desk. "And what is this place?"

"You're in Death Headquarters," the woman replied coolly, "and you were brought here because Dennis Delton wanted to speak with you."

"Delton?" I asked, very surprised. "Why?"

She stared at me. "And how am I supposed to know?"

I rolled my eyes. "Where do I go?"

She rolled her eyes as well. "Take the elevator to the 11th floor then go all the way to the right to room 1135. Knock twice and wait for a reply before entering."

I didn't stop to reply, instead moving as soon as she finished. "You're welcome!" I heard her scream, but I wasn't really paying attention to her. I was more focused on why Delton wanted to see me.

See, Delton is like our President, but he's more of a Founder than a President. He was supposedly the first Death the world had ever seen, and then it evolved to what we had today.

I was still thinking about why he had wanted to see me, as I knocked twice on his door, and he shouted "Enter!"

When I walked in, I was surprised at what I saw. I had expected a man over 6 feet tall, wearing a black suit, back turned on me, standing straight with hands behind his back.

Instead, I faced a man wearing ripped jeans and a faded shirt, sitting in a chair while smoking weed.

"You do drugs?" was the first thing that came out of my mouth.

He laughed. "Well, it can't kill us, can it?"

"Why did you send for me?" I asked, not laughing. A sense of humor was not a trait I possessed.

"How old are you, right now?" he asked, leaning forward in his seat. "Fifteen? Sixteen?"

"I'm 1,014 years old, actually," I said, raising my head higher.

He smiled again. "I meant, how old were you meant to look?"

"Sixteen years."

"Right. It was sixteen that was the youngest, not fifteen, hm..." he started muttering to himself.

I cleared my throat. "Well, if that's all you wanted to know, can I go?"

Delton looked up at me. "What? No, that's not what I called you for." I glared at him until he finally continued. "I want you to enroll in school."

He might as well have said I was kicked out. "What?!"

"You look of school age, you should act of school age," he said, no longer smiling. "Start tomorrow."

"Um, what? Excuse me, but I'm not a human!" he raised his eyebrows at me, but I ignored him. "What? It's true, I'm not. I have a very busy schedule - considering I'm the only ID in New York, and -"

"But you still have a lot of free time," he interrupted. "So you're going, and that's final. Besides," he added, leaning back in his chair, "the number of internal diseases are decreasing I think, so you won't be that busy. Maybe 5 in a day, at most."

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever," I muttered, stalking out of the room. But I still went to school, although I hated every second of it.

When I finally arrived at room 222, I pushed the door open, walking in. "Sorry I'm late," I said. "What I miss?"

The teacher, Ms. Blake, stared at me disapprovingly. "You and me, we're going to have a little talk after class."

I shrugged. "Okay." I didn't really care, so I went to sit at my seat, when I saw someone sitting there. I raised my eyebrows at him.

When he finally looked up at me, his eyes narrowed. "Can I help you?"

"Yeah, you can, actually, can you get out of my seat?"

"Nope. I came here first, so I get to decide where I sit. You're late, so you sit in the seat left."

"Isabelle, don't give Julian a hard time on his first day, and just sit down already," Ms. Blake called from the front.

Rolling my eyes, I walked over loudly to the seat next to him, making sure to accentuate every sound I made. I glanced over at the kid next to me. "Listen, Julie," I said, when Ms. Blake turned her back on us, "you be grateful I'm not in the mood to kick your ass right now."

He smirked, glancing at me. "Oh yeah, I'm definitely grateful," he replied, in a tone that could only be described as sarcastic. He grinned one more time before turning, when I suddenly felt something weird happen to me.

My heart started beating faster. Now this would seem normal to mortals, but this happened to Deaths on only two occasions.

One reason was when they worked out way past their endurance level. The other was when they started to like someone.

I wasn't working out.
