CH-1 THE INTERVIEW

Life was never fair to me. I always received pain for my good deeds. I wonder, what crime I have committed?

But then a realisation dawns upon me that God is testing me.

My whole childhood passed in suffering. I received hatred, taunts, curses and punishments. I received all pain but never received love. And I have no hope for love anymore. I only want a peaceful life away from the negative people spoiling my life.

Taking a step forward towards a bright future, I applied for a job at Kaiser Group. It's a leading arms and ammunition manufacturing company in the whole country. And I am applying for the job of CEO's Secretary.

I reached the office of Kaiser Group at sharp nine. I could see other girls of my age sitting in the corridor. Few of them were trying to look seductive. Either because the CEO is rumoured to be a playboy or those few girls are more confident in their seduction rather than their qualification.

Well, I don't need to trick people into being seductive. If I deserve this job, surely I will get it. Most of the girls were wearing shirts and trousers, some wearing Kurti and few wearing short dresses which were way too short. But most of them had done heavy makeup, I wonder how they handle that irritating stuff. I was wearing a plain white Kurta with a white Pant Palazzo and a white Dupatta. I didn't bother to do makeup, just applied a little bit of Kohl. My hair was covered with a white hijab and white sandals at my feet. All in all, I was all white.

I sat on a couch, holding my resume in my hands and continuously tapping my feet on the floor. Girls were entering CEO's office and coming out with a defeated expressions on their faces. Which meant, the CEO was a tough guy and surely he was not a playboy.

Finally, after waiting for whole two hours, it was my turn. I entered the cabin.

The cabin was majestic yet simple. The man sitting in front of me was in his late twenties. He was handsome. No, handsome would be an understatement for him. His looks were unique. Dark brown hairs, hazel green eyes, rosy lips, olive skin tone and a hint of innocence in his expression. Oh, I am getting envious of his gorgeous looks.

He was busy typing over his laptop. He felt my presence in the room and looked forward in my direction. For a second, our eyes met. The way he looked at me, was strange. I could see mixed emotions in his eyes.

Then I realised I haven't knocked yet. Maybe it annoyed him. I quickly knocked at the door, despite that he already acknowledged my presence.

"May I come in, sir?" I asked politely.

"You are already in." He said in a neutral tone.

I downcast my gaze.

"Have a seat, Miss..."

"Aqsa... Aqsa Nawaz." I completed his sentence while walking to his table.

I sat on one of the two chairs placed opposite his chair, while a big office table made up of glass was placed in between.

"May I have it?" He pointed towards my resume.

I nodded and gave it to him.

I wondered, the man sitting in front of me looked professional and dedicated. Then why he is rumoured to be a playboy?

"Hmm, so you are a scholar." He exclaimed with an interest. I only smiled in response.

Well, I am proud of myself for being a scholar. I had worked hard to pursue my studies, especially when my father had refused to support me financially.

"I have some questions for you." He said.

I nodded like an obedient child. I was feeling like he is my teacher and is going to ask me biology questions.

"What do you think I expect from you?" He asked.

"Dedication," I replied without giving it a second thought.

"Care to explain?"

"Every employer wants that his employees should be dedicated towards their work. It will increase the productivity, which will directly benefit the employer."

"Good... but boring." in a bored tone.

I got quiet. The smile on my face faded away. I am here for a job, not for his entertainment.

"Next question, ah... do you think I am playboy?"

What!?

This man is too much straightforward.

"Well, I heard the rumours. But after meeting you, I don't think it's true."
I replied hesitantly, but truly.

"You'll get to know the truth very soon."
What does he mean?

"What do you know about Kaiser Group?"
That's an easy question.

"Kaiser Group manufactures arms and ammunition. Due to it's good quality of weapons, the police department also orders weapons from this company...."

"Enough." He cut off me.

"Last question, what's my name?"

Oh My God! I don't know his name. It never came into my mind.

I didn't answer him, because I don't know the answer.

"Wow! You are here for the job of my Secretary and you don't know my name." He taunted me.

Yeah, because your employees call you "devil". How would I know your name? Your employees have given you such a beautiful nickname, Mr Devil Kaiser.

"You may leave." He ordered.

His face clearly expressed his disappointment. It meant that I don't deserve this job. I immediately left his cabin.

He was right. I should have asked his name.

But his employees called him Mr Kaiser, no one used his first name. While I even heard few employees calling him "Devil".

However, the conclusion is, I am not getting this job.

I pressed the doorbell. After a few moments my half-sister, Faiza, opened the door. She gave me an irritated look because she hates me. And I too equally hate her.

I entered the living room and saw my father, Nawaz Afsal, and stepmother, Mariyam, talking.

"What about your interview?" asked Abbu.

Wow! No hello, No salaam, just threw a question over me.

"I don't think I'll get this job."
I began walking towards my room.

"What can we expect from you? You are a failure." I heard my stepmother.

What can I expect from her? She is a witch.

I ignored her and entered my room. A tear of sadness escaped from my eyes, I am hurt. I had so many expectations from this job. I would earn a fine salary. I would leave this hell forever. I would spend a peaceful life. But I am a failure. I again proved I am a failure.

I laid on my bed and began mentally shouting over myself. I don't know when I fell asleep.

My sleep broke when I heard the ringtone of my phone. I picked it up.
"Hello?" I asked in a sleepy tone.

"Miss Nawaz, you have to join the office by tomorrow." A lady said in a professional tone.
Office?

"Which office?" I asked out of confusion.

"The office of Kaiser Group. You have been selected for the post of Mr Kaiser's Secretary."

"Are you sure, it's me?"

"Of course, I am sure."

"Thank you so much. I'll be there by tomorrow." The lady cut the call.

"Yesss! I got the job. I did it!" I shouted in excitement.

Now I'll show that mother-daughter duo, I am not a failure.
