Everyday is the same. I wake up, get changed, go to work. Come home, eat, stress, sleep, rinse and repeat.

Everyday there's this doll- the main attraction of the museum I work at. He's an old German doll wearing a Japanese sailor outfit. You can't tell by glance, but he has blonde hair, which blend in perfectly with the material in which his skin is made of. Naturally, I'm scared of dolls, especially ones that look real, and this one is no different.

Oh, and did I mention he's cursed? Yeah.

He always scares everyone. Everyone treats him as if he's a king or something, 'cause they're scared he'll curse someone or something. For me, I'm not really scared. I mean, what more? Everything is falling apart for me and the last thing I need to worry about is some stupid curse from a scary looking doll.

Today, I'm put on night guard shift again. One, I hate it. Two, being in that museum at night? Gives me shivers.

I sigh, putting on the uniform, grabbing my phone and putting it in my back pocket. Flipping my flashlight and putting it in my pocket, I fix my collar and head out to the museum.

Once I was greeted by my very kind boss, I was ready to start my shift. Muttering, I made my way through the museum, weaving my way through the exhibits and into the dolls. Even in daytime, this place gave me shivers, but it was part of my route.

Walking cautiously, I shine my flashlight on all of the displays until I make my way to the German doll display.

Empty.

"Fuck!" I yell, dropping my flashlight. "He's gone?!" I must be hyperventilating.

Quickly, I turn around, scanning the room, my hands shaking. Hearing breathing, I turn around and see a large man, eyes glassy, wearing a sailor outfit. I blink, double check the display, back to him, and then the display. He shows a sign of curiosity, but no more.

"Gah!" I screech, dropping the flashlight again. I scramble to get it, but the man grabs my wrist and forces me to look at him.

For a moment, we look into each other's eyes. His now blue eyes sparkling with sudden curiosity and warmth.

I take one more look at the glass display, then slowly turn my head to the man. "Y-You're..?"

"Ja." He says, voice a but rough and scratchy. "You're that girl."

"E-Excuse me?" I stutter.

"You. Sing?" He asks. My eyes widen. "You... You heard me?" I ask. He nods. "You. Singing? Nice. B..B.. Beau...?"

"Beautiful." I say for him. He embarrassed, rubs the back of his neck. "English. Not-"

"It's." I breathe. "Fine."

He blinks at me, then bends down to get the dropped flashlight. "Yours?" He asks. I take it from him, nodding. "Thank you. D-Danke?" I say. His eyes light up as if he hasn't heard German in quite a while.

"Excuse me," he says then in perfect English, "You speak German?" I shake my head. "Sadly not. Say- why are you now speaking perfect English?"

"Took my a while to get use to it, apologies." He says, eyes to the floor.

"I-It's alright," I stutter, shaking my head. Am I dreaming? Is this tall, German man the doll I saw just yesterday?

"Ja, I am." Shook, I jump. "You can read my thoughts?" I ask in disbelief. He nods. "Too much?" He asks.

Oh my god.

"A-Ah, m-maybe," I say, feeling light-headed. "J-Just need to s-sit down, that's a-all." Sitting on the floor, my head spins. Too much is happening for me to process.

"Water?" I look up to see the man holding a water bottle. Without question, I chug it, the water refreshing me.

"Ah, thank you uh-" I look to him. "Say, I never got your name. Do you even have one?"

He looks to me, blue eyes shining. "Ja. My name is Ludwig. Yours?"

I point to my ID. "(Y/n) (L/n). Or just... (Y/n)..." I trail off. This is so strange.

"Ludwig," I say finally. "H-Have you been the doll in the display?" I point to the empty glass. "Have you always been a doll for... forever?"

He looks to the floor, sad. "J.. Ja. I had a kid friend, but h-he's long gone now." I rub his back apologetically. "I'... I'm so sorry," I whisper, "That must be... hell for you. Even though you where a doll, I guess you have... feelings?" He looks to me, eyes sad, and nods.

I look to the floor. "You must've been so lonely. Just having a stuffed animal dog to keep you company, and the many, many tourists comming and going." I look up. "Ha, I'm lonely, too."

He puts his hand on my back. "Are you really?" I nod. "I'm so far away from home," I whisper, "And my parents... Well, they kinda..." I look to him.

"Disowned me."

His face is full with shock. "Yeah," I laugh lightly, "Parents don't have to love their children, Ludwig. You never knew that, huh?"

Ludwig is quiet. He opens his mouth to say something, and then closes it.

"C.. Can.. Can you sing, (Y/n)? Again?" My eyes widen. "But- I- Uh-"

I sigh. I know I'll have to do it anyways. Clearing my throat, I sing.

Little Girl, so lost,
How do you find yourself lost in this world?
This cruel, cruel world?
Oh, how I do not know
How your eyes shine in the sun
As you dance, dance in the dark.
Might you teach me your ways?

Little Girl, perhaps not lost,
How do you do it?
How do you find yourself happy in this world?
This world where
Happiness is no longer alive?

Little Girl, never lost,
I wish you merry, merry do!
As your body floats out to sea,
only to put out by the rain?

As I finish, I turn to Ludwig, who to my surprise has turned back into his doll-self. Gently, I pick him up, looking at him.

"I wonder," I say, mainly to myself, "How do you do it? Is it by will? Is it by magic? Who knows?"

Putting him back in and locking it, I continue on my night shift, peaking to the German doll every once in a while.
