15. I Don't Trust Me Enough
Hyunjin's POV
I didn't look at my phone after the fire, only when Haengbok called me, but what I didn't realize was that Jeongin and the others called.
Multiple times.
I awoke the next morning after getting patched up by Deiji and Haengbok to find my phone had more than 100 missed calls.
"Fuck."
Yesterday Deiji said the first thing to do was call her so she could come to apply the cream and give me some numbing medication.
But I can't do that, my friends are worried for me, and she doesn't have to know about her not being the first one I called.
I quickly called Jeongin, holding in a pained groan.
Jeongin's POV
I sat up from where I was on Chan hyung's bed as my phone went off.
I grumbled, feeling Chan unwrap his hands from around me as he sat up as well.
"Who'd call at this hour ?"
Chan hyung asked, and I wondered the same thing as I reached out my phone to check the contact name.
It was Hyunjin, he didn't come back after he left for his walk, we were all very worried for him, we called multiple times but got no answer.
Me and Chan looked at each other in shock for a moment before I pressed the answer button, bringing the phone up to my ear.
"Hyung !"
I called out to the elder, fear still written in my heart.
"Hey, Innie."
His voice sounded strained and I wondered if he had been crying.
"Hyung, where were you last night ? You didn't come back from your walk."
Hyunjin let out a small sigh.
"I didn't, I know. I'm sorry about worrying you."
I hummed, showing that I was listening.
Hyunjin's POV
"We didn't hear from you for hours hyung, I don't think you understand how worried we were, Kkami was getting antsy, he wouldn't stop moving around, Seungmin got him to fall asleep though."
I winced as Jeongin explained, feeling slightly guilty.
"M' sorry, I'll explain. I just need... 40 minutes to get down to your apartment, but... when you see me, I need you to not freak out. I'll explain everything, and I mean everything."
My firm words were hiding all of my anxiety, I felt my heart beating rapidly in my chest and tears forming in my eyes.
"Alright hyung, I'll see you then."
Jeongin responded softly, his voice sounding a bit put off and cold, it made me even more scared to explain everything.
I set my phone down, my stomach twisting and turning in knots so bad I felt like crying out because of that, instead of the ever present pain in my back.
We hadn't hung up yet but I couldn't hold in my sobs.
"Hyung ?"
Jeongin called out softly, and my breath hitched, I didn't know he was still on the call.
"O-Oh sorry, I'll hang up now."
Jeongin's voice stopped me from hanging up and I hid my face in my hands, not prepared for what he might say.
"Wait, hyung ? What's really going on ?"
A sob ripped from my throat before I could reply.
"I-it's something I don't truly want to tell you, b-but I really, really want you to trust me."
Jeongin let out a light 'oh' before there was shuffling and a weird static sound, and then someone else's voice filled the space of my room.
"Hyunjin, hey... listen, you don't have to tell us anything, we just need to know if we'll have to watch Kkami until you can pick him up."
At the reassurance I thought over what to say, still covering my face with my hands.
I wouldn't be fair not to tell them, especially since I'll need a few weeks to fully recover.
It made me sad, thinking about not seeing Kkami for so long, I had barely just taken him home for the first time a day or two ago and now I won't see him for almost two weeks.
I'm the worst owner ever.
"I'm so sorry to ask you of this but is two weeks okay, I-I know how bad it sounds but I-"
A sob ripped from my throat as I continue.
"Hyunjin, calm down. Two weeks is fine, we may not know the reason but as long as you're okay it's alright, we'll be happy to take care of Kkami for you."
I relieved breath slipped past my lips and I whispered out repetitive 'thank you's until Chan hyung stopped me.
"There's no need to thank me- us, It's alright, we're just glad that you're okay. Be safe, see you in two weeks."
I let out a little huff of air as he said that, before telling him to be safe as well, only getting to hang up after Jeongin insisted on saying bye to me as well.
I struggled to sit up, trying not to fall back as I did.
Once I had successfully sat up, even with my back still stinging in pain, I called Deiji, ready for the numbing medication and burn relief cream.
"H-Hello ?, is this Deiji ?"
I hesitantly asked, not sure if it was her, or if she lied, Haengbok seems to trust her so I'll try my best to do the same.
I thought to myself waiting to see if Deiji would be the one to talk.
Then as her familiar voice poured through the phone I smiled.
"This is Deiji, Sam is that you ?"
I answered her quickly as I tried to stand up, only for a yelp to fall past my lips as I stumbled back into the bed.
"Y-Yeah, it's me."
Deiji hummed, then I heard shuffling and what seemed to be a door opening and closing.
"I'll be on the way in 15 minutes, your house is a little while away from the hospital."
I frowned a bit, she's really coming all this way to help me, a villain ? She's doing this all for me...no, nevermind, she's doing this all for Haengbokkie.
"O-Oh, sorry you have to come so far..."
I stated, a shaky breath slipping past my lips as I curled into myself, a pained cough leaving my mouth.
"Hey, hey, none of that, no. I'm doing this for you as a patient, not you as Asani Sam, but you as a human being."
Tears slipped from my eyes as I brought my hand up to cover up the sobs trying to escape my mouth.
"Don't you dare go and start thinking I'm only doing this for Haengbok, because I'm not. I trust you because he does, but not only that, the way you saved those kids yesterday, i-it... it made me see just how wrong people were about you..."
I listened to her speaking, not being able to bring myself to talk as I thought over her words.
"This rain, the weather... do you really control it ?"
I calmed down slightly as I tried to answer her question.
"Not everytime, just when my emotions are stronger than usual."
She hummed in understanding.
"When I'm really angry or really sad it gets pretty bad, I was really upset yesterday so it ended up storming pretty hard, even before the fire started at the building."
After I explained she hummed, "I see."
"Speaking of the fire, did they ever find out who started it ?"
I asked curiously, thinking back to the police investigation.
"Yes, apparently a cigar from a passerby was left unattended and it lit up some stuff in the dumpster connected to the building, then slowly as the hours progressed the building went up in flames."
I frowned, a light 'oh' slipping past my lips.
"Yeah, the leader of the junior heroes, Yeonjun is the only who has apologized to you on behalf of Da-hye."
My eyes widened in surprise, a choked cough leaving my lips as the gasp I let out lead me to choking on air.
"Really ?"
I asked, clearly out of breath from my embarrassing choking fit.
"Yup, I'll show you the video once I get to your house, I'm nearly there."
I hummed, trying to hide my slight excitement.
"How do you think Da-hye feels ?"
I asked, wondering about his reaction to the real person who started the fire.
"I wouldn't know, Haengbok kicked him off the junior heroes team, but my guess is he probably feels like shit, or like an embarrassment, there's no in between, he could feel like both."
I didn't mean to laugh at the statement but the way she said it sounded unserious, almost amusingly and I couldn't help the bubbling laughing rippling from my throat.
She laughed lightly as well, seeming to understand why I found humor in what she said.
"But on a serious note, he deserves to feel like shit, after all what he did is terrible, the condition he left you in is like none I've ever seen, you didn't deserve to go through that and he shouldn't have made those assumptions."
Her words made me smile sadly, feeling a slightly fluttering feeling in my chest.
"Are we friends ?"
I asked without thinking and I froze, dropping my phone onto the bed as I covered my face with my hands.
Deiji's voice was muffled as she replied because of my phone now stuffed within the duvet on my bed.
"U-uh, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."
I explained in slight guilt.
"What- did you not hear what I said ?"
She asked, her tone of voice sounding almost as if she was offended, an amused hint to it making me relieved.
"No sorry, I dropped my phone."
She laughed at my words, and I giggled.
"I said we can be, also do you have your mask on ?"
Her answer and her question made my eyes widen in surprise.
"Uh- ah- uh, half of it got burned off during the fire, I'll have to find a spare."
She hummed, "Yeah, just asking cause I'm around the corner and as much as I'd like to know what you may look like I know heroes and villains alike like to keep their identities secret."
Her words made me smile, and I shuffled into a position where I could try to sit up, once I did I looked around for one of my spare masks I had laying around, my phone still help up to my ear.
"Uuuhhh, hmmmmm, Ah-ha! Found one!"
I exclaimed happily, before a feeling of realization hit me.
"I, uh, can't really walk to go grab it."
She let a light 'damn it' out at my words.
"There's none beside you at all ?"
I looked around once again before I spotted a plain white one on the floor beside my bed.
"I found one."
She let out a relieved sigh and I couldn't help but do the same.
"I'm pulling into your driveway right now, so I'm hanging up."
I scrambled onto the floor after she hung up the phone, before getting up off the floor and standing.
I realized I had to let her in, so I would have to try really hard to walk right now, even if it means I may fall.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck fuck."
Every step I took grew faster as the same profanity spewed past my lips, it was the only thing I could exclaim at the time while in pain.
I reached the front door soon after the doorbell had rang and Deiji's voice was heard from outside.
"Fuck, I'm a dumbass, he said he couldn't walk."
I laughed lightly at her words before unlocking the door and pulling it open.
"Oh, shit. You shouldn't even be fucking standing dude, are you okay ?"
I laughed at her concerned question as she lead me to the couch with her arm over my shoulder and mine over hers.
"You know what I didn't realize before just now ?"
I questioned in a pained daze.
"What ?"
She asked, grabbing her bag of the things she needed from the doorway before she helped me over to the couch.
"You're taller than me."
I stated matter of factly, and she laughed lightly, a nod conforming that what I said was true.
"Yup, 6'2 actually."
At her words I clapped excitedly.
"You're so cool."
She laughed even more at my words.
"I think the pain is making you say all of this."
I hummed with a shrug, maybe it was.
"You think so ?"
I asked and she nodded, a fond smile on her face.
"Yes actually, I do. You keep saying all these things that I don't think you would say normally."
I let out a light 'ah' at her words and she hummed in confirmation.
"Are you my noona Deiji ?"
She hummed in thought, before arching her brow as if pondering the answer.
"You know what ?, probably."
I nodded, "It all depends on the year you were born."
She said lightly.
"Oh, I was born in '01 !"
I explained almost childishly.
"Yup, I'm definitely your noona, Sam."
I nodded at the information.
"What year were you born noona ?"
At the question she lightly shrieked, "Yah, that's not a question you can just ask silly!"
She lightly hit me with the tube of burn relief cream before letting out a chuckle.
"But I was born in '96, for your information."
She stated and I gasped only to say, "You're even older than Channie hyung!"
At my words she grabbed at throw pillow from my couch and hit me lightly on the head with it.
"Yah! I know I'm old but stop making me feel older !"
I laughed loudly, defending myself from her light hits as she laugh along with me.
"Alright, enough of that, I need to get this burn relief cream on you."
She handed me the pillow, and I clutched it to my chest as I held it in my lap.
I turned my back to her as she instructed me to and she did the same procedure she did yesterday swiftly.
The cooling feeling of the burn relief cream made me let out a content sigh as she wrapped the bandages around my torso so the bandage wouldn't fall off my back.
"Finished."
She stated, patting my shoulder lightly with a warm smile.
"Now, let me get a good look at your legs, you not being able to walk so well isn't good, so I need a little X-ray scan and I'll be off to do some medical checks."
She explained making me lay back on the couch as she scanned my legs with a hand held X-ray monitor.
"Alright, I'll get the results tomorrow which will be perfect because I need to check how your back is doing, along with doing a rewrap of the bandages and burn relief cream. The sooner you're healed the better."
She said, pulling me into a side hug as to not put pressure on my back.
"Well Sam, I'll see you tomorrow, or later if the pain becomes bad enough to the point you need some numbing medication."
I nodded at her words, taking in all the information.
"Let's get you back into bed, I might bring a set of crutches and a wheelchair tomorrow as well, so it's a little easier on you to get around."
I hummed at her words, looking down at my legs in slight disbelief.
She helped me up from the couch and to the bedroom and I thanked her.
"You haven't eaten yet, and it's my job as your temporary nurse to make sure you're eating well, I'm gonna bring you back some food."
I clapped excitedly at her words and she smiled happily at me.
"Can you get me some burritos, or tamales ?"
She nodded giving me a thumbs up.
"You have good taste, I'll bring all the good stuff, so be prepared for the feast of your life."
She exclaimed happily.
"Oh Deiji you're gonna spoil me rotten."
I stated cheekily, and she laughed loudly.
"It's my job, hello ?, I'm like your fairy god noona Sam."
I laughed at her words, I was truly grateful to have a friend like her.
"Thank you Deiji noona!"
I cheered, smiling at her.
"You're welcome Sam."
_________________________________________
(A/N: I finally made a character who matches Hyunnies energy for this AU! Isn't Deiji the best ?!)
(I hope you like her just as much as I do, and I hope you like this chapter more <3)
(It took me a little while to figure out what to really write for this chapter, I genuinely couldn't think of what to add for the conversation Hyunnie had with Channie and Innie, but I did it!!!)
(This chapter is slightly less angsty than the rest and I'm glad I made a fluffier chapter because who doesn't love wholesome content >_<)
(Anyways, like I said I hope you like the chapter, please tell me if there's any typo's, my mind was going a mile a minute while writing this because I just had so much inspiration! So I hope this made sense lol.)
(Anyways, thank you for reading this chapter and maybe even this author's note, have a good day/night/afternoon!!!)
