Chapter 16
When Your Eyes Look Right
Shun is acting suspicious, and Hyoga starts to consider the worst case scenario.

Hyoga woke up when the sunlight that entered through the window hit his closed eyes. He blinked a few times before being able to focus on his surroundings. He rolled in bed, shifting his position and snuggling on his side. There he faced him; his boyfriend was still sleeping, his chest going calmly up and down, letting out soft moans every now and then. Hyoga stared at him with amusement. Shun was beautiful in every way, but when he was sleeping, he irradiated a particular beauty that Hyoga loved.
Slowly, his sight focused on Shun's lips, slightly open and wet, rosey and round. Unable to resist, Hyoga set a soft kiss upon them.
Almost immediately, Shun's eyes open slowly, glaring at Hyoga smiling in front of him. He grinned, still a little sleepy.
"Wow! That's the quickest you've ever woken up, baby!" Hyoga greeted him, making Shun laugh.
"Good morning," he replied, soft and sleepy, his fingers wandering through Hyoga's lips.
After a few kisses and cuddles, both finally managed to get out of bed. Hyoga was eager to spend the whole day with Shun doing nothing, but during breakfast, his plans fell apart.
"Sorry, ducky. I'm meeting up with Seiya at the arcade today," he explained remorselessly, biting his toast. "Maybe some other day."
Speechless, Hyoga tried to recall when Shun had arranged that plan; he usually told him about that with anticipation; after all, there was no one more organized than him, only Shiryu.
"You didn't tell me anything about it," he said, focusing on buttering his toast to avoid eye contact with Shun.
"Of course I did," he grinned, sure of himself. So sure, it annoyed Hyoga.
Actually, the whole thing was hacking him off; maybe Shun did tell him and he had forgotten about it.
"Okay," he added. "May I join you then?" he asked, trying to hide his discomfort. The arcade wasn't his favorite place on earth, but at least he would spend time with Shun.
"I don't think so," Shun stated, not giving much importance to the matter.
Hyoga froze, almost breaking his toast. Shun's attitude was unusual, and he wasn't having it.
"Why not?"
"You hate that place, plus, you're not very good at playing. You wouldn't enjoy yourself, Hyoga-chan, and you know your bad mood drags everyone into it," he explained happily.
Hyoga was flabbergasted; for a moment, he thought he was speaking to Ikki instead of his brother.
"You never cared about my bad mood before," Hyoga protested, crossing his arms. "In fact, you've said it's cute!"
"Oh! I don't say it for me, but for Seiya! You know how he is."
Hyoga frowned. Nothing made sense. Shun was most likely lying to him. But why?
Breakfast came to an end—to Shun's relief—and both of them went separate ways. Hyoga stayed in his pajamas and settled on the couch to rumble while he watched TV, and Shun got dressed to meet Seiya.
After a few hours, Hyoga was still fuming on the couch when his phone rang.
It was Seiya.
He answered right away. If Seiya was calling, then something had probably happened to Shun.
"What?" Hyoga answered abruptly.
"Jeez, dude! Chill!" Seiya whined. "Did I interrupt something?" he cheekily inquired.
"What do you want? Is Shun okay?"
"What?"
"Why are you calling!" Hyoga yelled, exasperated.
"To check if you wanted to do something fun! Shiryu is busy and Ikki is gone; as usual, I wanna do something fun!" he explained, "So... I want to know if you guys wanna hang out?"
"Are you teasing me?"
"Why would I?"
"Shun is with you!"
The telephone line remained silent for a few seconds before Seiya replied. "No, he's not."
"You are at the arcade, aren't you?" Hyoga added; he didn't know what to think or feel anymore.
"Nop, I'm home, dude."
Hyoga was tongue-tied. He tried to repeat the sequence of events in his head; maybe he had missed something.
"And Shun?" he insisted.
"How would I know? You live together! Isn't he with you?"
"No! He said he was meeting with you!"
"Have you tried... I don't know... calling him?"
Hyoga groaned. "No."
"Ah! I suggest you start there. Call me if you want me to do anything, okay?"
"Sure."
Seiya could sense from the other side of the line that Hyoga was confused and in distress. Shun wasn't the type who lied and often made excuses; on the contrary, he had always been a righteous human being.
"I'm sure there's an explanation for all this," he offered, trying to reassure his friend.
They hung up, and, after a few minutes to reflect on what he had just learned, Hyoga took his phone, determined to call Shun.
He stared at it for a few seconds more, his foot moving fast up and down. It was clearly a misunderstanding; that phone call would certainly get things straight. The problem was, did he want to clarify this? Many ideas and scenarios went through his head the moment Seiya told him Shun wasn't there. From his perspective, that phone call could end his relationship for good, and he wasn't ready to let that go.
He had already lost his mother, Isaak, and Camus; Shun was the only one that remained in his life. Was he abandoning him too?
He shook his head and braced himself for what was coming.
"Moshi moshi?"
"Hi! How's everything going?" Hyoga asked, trying not to sound too nervous or defensive. He had promised himself to play it cool.
"Ummm... good! Great! Yeah!" Shun stuttered, a little confused.
"Having fun?"
"Sure! Is something the matter, Hyoga-chan?"
"No, no, no, no, no... I-I just wanted to know if you and Seiya were having a good time, that's all!" Hyoga answered, emphasizing Pegasus' name, hoping Shun might catch his intentions and tell him the truth once and for all.
"Oh... yeah! We're having lots of fun here–" Shun was interrupted by a feminine voice.
"Shun-chan! I think you'll look great in this one!"
Hyoga froze, open-mouthed. That was June's voice.
Shun had not only lied to him straight to his face, he was meeting secretly with June.
Was he... cheating on him?
"Is that June?" Hyoga yelled, losing his temper.
Shun mumbled something Hyoga couldn't catch before answering. "No, it's... it's not her," he lied, not very convincingly. "Look, Hyoga, I have to go. Call you later."
Before Hyoga could say a word, Shun hung up.
He dropped his phone as he plopped down on the couch, as if his body had stopped responding.
Nothing made sense; Shun would never do something like that, yet there he was, somewhere alone with June, having a blast. He thought of telling him he had spoken to Seiya, but he couldn't get the chance. Besides, deep inside him, he wanted to know how deeply Shun would sink himself into his own lie. That would only inflict him more pain, but apparently, every single person that he loved was bound to abandon him.
He wanted to cry and scream. No. Even more. He wanted to disappear. To run away from that apartment, to hide in a place where no one could ever find him.
From all the people, it had to be Shun. The only one he thought was incapable of doing any harm. But he was wrong. On the contrary, enemies could punch him, break his bones, and more, but Shun was the only one who could actually harm him for real.
He spent the rest of the afternoon sobbing in the living room. Feeling sorry for himself, submerged in a dark place he hadn't been in quite a while. A deep pit where Shun had once rescued him, only to let him fall harder.
Hyoga waited for Shun to come back to settle things, but Andromeda never did. That only disappointed him more, although he was a bit relieved regarding Shun's absence since he didn't feel capable of looking him in the eyes.
At six o'clock, his phone rang. He rushed to answer, hoping it was Shun, but dissatisfaction won again.
"Hi, Shiryu. What's up?" he said with a gloomy voice.
"Hey, man! I need a favor." Shiryu sounded rather happy on the other side of the line, which made Hyoga jealous.
"Shoot,"
"Shunrei asked me to a movie night with her friends; I need you as my wingman."
Hyoga sighed. "Ummm, I don't know... Why don't you ask Seiya?"
"He's busy."
Hyoga frowned. "He called me to say he was bored."
"Well... now he's not..." Hyoga wasn't sure, but he could hear a little hesitation in Shiryu's voice. "Please?"
"I'm really not in the mood..."
"I'm pretty sure this will cheer you up," Shiryu rushed to reply, fearing Hyoga might hang up.
"I–"
"Dress nicely, ok?"
Hyoga sighed again. Shiryu's request seemed more like a command. He had the feeling he wasn't going to be left alone until he said yes.
"Fine."
Hyoga got dressed, grumbling the whole time. Shunrei had probably picked a booby-cheesy romcom, and her friends most likely included Miho and Erii.
Then he saw a chance.
Shun was incredibly jealous of Erii; her friendship with Hyoga was one of the few things that irritated the Andromeda Saint. By the time Shun would finally come home and ask him where he'd been, he could effortlessly reply that he was out with Erii. That should do the trick.
A little bit more confident—although not happy enough—Hyoga was on his way.
Funnily enough, Shiryu didn't ask him to meet at the movie theater, but he picked a restaurant instead. Hyoga didn't question him; he assumed the group was having dinner there before the film.
He waited outside the restaurant, feeling uneasy. Shun's deception was still on his mind.
After a few minutes, Hyoga received a text from Shiryu:
«Get inside»
Hyoga sighed; he wanted the night to be over already. He longed for his bed in order to have some rest from the awful day he had had. With a bit of luck, he would wake up to find out everything had only been a terrible nightmare.
He forced himself inside; the place was suspiciously empty. Of all the tables, only one was set up for dinner, with a pristine tablecloth and elegant silver cutlery, all embellished with a bouquet of pink roses.
Hyoga stared confused at the scene, and just when he thought of getting out of there, he heard some footsteps coming towards him.
Before him, Shun appeared dressed in a classy suit, looking handsome with his hair tied in a low ponytail. He smiled timidly and offered Hyoga a rose.
"What's this?" Hyoga rudely questioned, ignoring completely the red flower.
"I made this for us!" Shun giggled. "Guess it didn't turn out the way I planned it."
Hyoga snorted. "You think you can cheat on me and then arrange something nice to make it up?"
Shun frowned and denied it with his head, leaving the rose on the accessorized table.
"I... I didn't cheat on you," he explained, taking a few steps closer to Hyoga.
"You lied to me!"
"I wanted to give you a surprise!"
Hyoga tried to control his agitated breath. He was starting to comprehend the situation. Even though the cheating was crossed off the list, he still didn't know why Shun would plan something like that just for a regular date.
"Why didn't you ask me on a date like we usually do?" he confronted, trying to stay as calm as possible. "What occasion deserved so much secrecy?" he added, fearing he might have forgotten something.
"Our first kiss," Shun replied with a sincere smile.
Hyoga stared at him in shock. He certainly didn't expect that, nor did he have that special date on his calendar.
"Our... first kiss...?" Hyoga repeated; now he was feeling stupid. He had made a fuss for nothing.
Shun nodded, wrapping his arms around Hyoga's neck. "I'm afraid I blew it, but... is the intention what counts, right?"
Hyoga looked at him hopelessly; not only had he ruined Shun's efforts for a romantic dinner, he had absolutely no clue about their first kiss' date. He remembered it, surely, but not the exact date. But Shun had always been more thoughtful and meticulous in this kind of stuff; he should've seen it coming.
"I... I'm sorry," Hyoga mumbled. "I completely forgot... I had no idea."
Shun chuckled. "I was counting on it!"
Hyoga laughed in relief. Shun hadn't abandoned him, and he wasn't crossed with him or anything. What he thought was the worst day of his existence turned out to be one of the best.
He leaned to kiss Shun on the lips, enjoying their softness and sweetness like never before. Only a few moments ago, he thought he wasn't going to taste those lips anymore. He felt so happy and silly that he wanted to cry.
"I promise next time I'll try to remember all of our anniversaries," Hyoga stated, placing his forehead against Shun's.
"Oh! Don't bother! It's more exciting if you don't expect it," Shun grinned. "But if we get married and you ever forget our wedding anniversary, then I'll file for divorce."
Hyoga laughed. "You want to marry me?"
"Yeah! Eventually," Shun smiled, as if it were obvious.
"I'm sorry I doubted you," Hyoga muttered, returning to his gloomy mood.
Shun shook his head. "Don't apologize, ducky. I imagined you had a hard time figuring out what was going on." Shun made a pause before continuing. "By the way, how did you find out I was lying? I thought I'd crafted the perfect excuse."
Hyoga grinned. "Seiya called me."
Shun scorned. "Damn! I knew it! I should've warned him about my plans."
Both of them laughed, losing themselves in another kiss.
Now, Hyoga could be absolutely sure about one thing:
Shun would always be there for him.
