Chapter 15

Delicacies of Destiny

Since Hyoga moved in with Shun, his life has improved on so many levels... especially food.

After the alarm clock rang at 5:30 in the morning, Hyoga began to prepare himself for another day.

His white-collar job was not bad at all—good payment and nice hours—it was a fine place in general, except for one thing: it was in the middle of nowhere.

That meant that even if he entered at nine and left at six—with two hours for meals in between—he had to leave the apartment at 7:00 o'clock to embark on a two-hour commute.

Such a situation left him with little to no time to do anything at all.

Nevertheless, he wasn't all alone in that boat. While the blond took a shower and was getting dressed, Shun—his boyfriend/roommate, depending on who was asking—rolled in bed for a few minutes and then got up to prepare breakfast.

That was an absolute blessing for Hyoga, since he would never find the time to cook his own meals anyway, and his cooking skills were... poorly, to say the least.

Nifty and tidy, Hyoga stepped into the dining room. The delicious smell of waffles and bacon filled his nose.

He loved Shun's cooking, and not just because his was crap; he preferred his boyfriend's food over Shiryu's or Seiya's. Somehow, Shun always managed to get everything perfectly cooked and seasoned, never too over the top or too dull. At least, in his opinion, he did.

Whether he was naturally attracted to his boyfriend's cooking or if the latter modified it just to please him, that was the best part of his day.

"Take a seat, ducky!" Shun happily yelled from the kitchen, knowing Hyoga was already in the dining room.

Hyoga had absolutely no idea how his boyfriend was able to cook breakfast, take a bath, get dressed, commute, and still manage to arrive at work on time. He even cooked lunch for both of them, never forgot tiny details like the car keys or belongings, and always seemed to flow perfectly through all of that; yet, there were times when Hyoga couldn't even tie his tie properly. Maybe it came natural to him, or perhaps the fact that Shun's shift at the bookstore started at eleven had something to do; truth be told, Hyoga was perfectly sure he was a functional human being until he witnessed in the flesh all the treats and commodities of life while living with Shun.

Before Shun, when Hyoga shared his bachelor apartment with Isaak, he barely had time to look at himself in the mirror. He used to rapidly sip a cup of tasteless instant coffee and call it a day. Then, while commuting, he bought a sandwich or donut on the way to eat. At the office, he often skipped lunchtime, eating only when his stomach was too loud to ignore, then he proceeded to munch whatever the bending machine had to offer. Late at night, he ate whatever Issak left him in the fridge or any takeout he had bought on his way home.

His life had changed so much since then.

When Isaak told him he was moving back to Finland, Hyoga crumbled. He didn't want to go back to the Kido Manor; nobody lived there anymore! Except for Saori, nevertheless, her company alone wasn't something he felt comfortable with; they were nice to each other, but that was it.

There was no way he could afford such a place with his budget, and just when he thought he was going to have to live in a tiny apartment in a bad neighborhood, Shun rescued him.

Ikki had moved in with Esmeralda, and Shun was looking for a roommate. The moment he knew Hyoga lacked one, he offered him a bedroom and half of the rent.

"I'll think about it," was his answer.

He wanted to say yes; living alone with Shun would be a dream come true. He couldn't deny his feelings towards him anymore—at least to himself. Since that day during the Galaxian Wars, his love and admiration for the Andromeda Saint have only grown.

So, after one sleepless night—and considering that Shun had pledged the offer first, so Ikki couldn't do anything about it—he called him to seal the agreement.

Not only did his relationship with Shun progress from being keen on each other to actual lovers—unless Ikki asked—but his life also improved in every possible way. Everything was brighter and tidier, and he found himself eager to come home to Shun after a long day. Even if his whole life was better than expected, there was one thing in particular that changed for the best: Shun's cuisine.

It was cozy, homemade, and plain delicious. Not because he was a great chef or had a prodigious ability to cook delicacies—truth be told, Shun couldn't cook anything more complicated than a bowl of ramen—but because the effort and passion he put into every single dish were the only ingredients he needed to make his meals an absolute treat. Hyoga was not only eating better but also enjoying food and life more in Shun's company.

Hyoga smiled and heaved a sigh when he got wind of the best decision of his life. There and then, in the middle of their cozy dining room, among the smell and crispness of waffles and bacon, fresh orange juice, tasteful coffee, and, the cherry on top, a bowl of juicy and sparkling watermelon, he never felt happier.

The best way to begin his day was a magical breakfast, brought to him by the best magician of them all, for not only had he performed wonders in the kitchen, he had also transformed his misery into exultation, enchanting him to stay forever by his side.

"Coffee?" Shun asked, pouring him a cup and taking a seat by his side.

"Thank you," he grinned, laying his hand on top of Shun's, which was resting on the table. Not only for such a marvelous breakfast, but for everything.

"My pleasure!"

Indeed, it was.

"Itadakimasu!"
