#8 Cleaning Up

Despite sleeping for hours before Doctor Murphy came to get him, Sans quickly falls asleep again after he returns to his room. He remembers Papyrus looking over the workbooks. One of them is meant for his grade, but Sans must have dozed off before he asked which one. Sometimes, his body just feels unbelievably heavy. Those times make him want to sleep forever.

He later wakes up to someone gently shaking his shoulder. Sans doesn't want to get up yet, and he only pulls the blanket up over his head. He's still tired.

"Sans....", Doctor Hansen sighs, but the Monster can't hear it. "It's time for you to wake up. My shift is already halfway over". She shakes the skeleton again, but he doesn't respond. When Hansen stands up to look over at his face, the eye lights are gone. Sans actually fell back asleep in seconds

Hansen sighs again before she lifts the artificial Monster off of the bed. She doesn't want to push it over any limits after what happened last time, but she can't shirk her duties, either. Sans startles awake at being picked up off the bed. Swaddled in his blanket, he can't see what's going on, and flails around in the Doctor's arms until she sets him down on the ground. Hansen pulls the blanket off his face. The eye lights are bright now with attention.

"Hey, sorry, little guy. I didn't want you sleeping too much longer without an injection", Hansen tries to comfort it, but she doesn't sign. Sans understands the sight of the needle well enough. He hunches his shoulders and looks away as Hansen prepares the needle. She gives him two injections into the fragile soul.

"That's all the injections for right now". Hansen is talking to herself more than the Monster. "Gaster also asked me to get you cleaned up. A few of our investors are really wanting to see you". She stands up, and Sans follows her out of the room. He doesn't protest this time. He drags the blanket a few paces before getting it shaken off of his foot.

They walk past the gym, and then the office. Sans has never been this far in the building. Lots of closed and locked doors are on either side of the hallway, but no other people. Other Monsters? Sans has never seen anyone that looks like him.

Hansen finally stops in front of a swinging door. The artificial Monster almost runs into her legs. Sans tilts his head, confused by the swinging door when Hansen opens it and motions for him to step in. The room is tiled with a mint shade of green. One wall is lined with benches and lockers. The other is lined with stalls. This area of the lab, where the four doctors work, has two locker rooms. Hansen is used to using this one herself, and didn't want to use the men's locker room for this.

"Ok, Sans, I need to take off your gown", she uses hand signs this time. The three guys dumped this task on her without room for complaint. Hansen has to remind herself that it's no different than bathing a toddler or large dog. She quickly unties the knot behind its neck and pulls the medical gown off him. Sans is a skeleton. He doesn't have skin, or muscle, or other physical features. He still feels exposed without anything on. Doctor Hansen briefly wonders about how one would tell male and female skeletons apart. Gaster says Sans is male, and that's what the deep voice sounded like, but she doesn't actually know how to tell without any...... of the parts.

The doctor discards the gown on one of the benches before walking over to one of the stalls. A few are toilets, and one is a shower with a few different heads. She turns it on and steps back when the water starts to flow. The artificial Monster jumps back. The water was just close enough to splash him. He doesn't have much experience with liquids outside of magic injections.

"It's ok. It's just water. It can't hurt you", Hansen laughs a little. She cups her hands and then holds them underneath the water. She then quickly dumps it on the Monster's head. He balks and flinches away at the cold liquid. Just like Gaster predicted, none of the water gets inside of Sans's eye sockets. Some invisible barrier keeps out anything that's not supposed to be there. Presumably, the same barrier will keep water out of the chest cavity. The fragile soul is clearly visible through the ribs.

Sans isn't entirely willing to get near the shower. Hansen has to nudge him forwards. He digs his heels into the ground when the water is close enough to splash him again. Doctor Hansen has to shove him forwards to actually get him in the water. He would have screeched if he had a voice. Sans almost knocks Hansen down trying to get out of the water.

"COLD COLD COLD COLD", Sans signs the word over and over again frantically with both hands.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'll turn the heat up for you", Hansen can't help but laugh. She didn't know if the Monster could feel temperature without skin. It's never complained before now. Hansen decides that he must only feel the two extreme ends of heat.

Sans is suspicious of the water this time. He slowly reaches out with one hand to feel the water after the Doctor turns a handle. To his surprise, it's warm. Sans's body doesn't give off any heat, but the water is warm like his magic is. Warm on the outside. He steps fully into the stream after that. A skeleton doesn't sweat or get stinky like a human would, but Gaster still thought this necessary to make the Monster presentable.

When under the water, everything is still silent for him. All Sans can think about is what the water might sound like. Nothing bad happened when he broke Murphy's rule last night. Doctor Hansen won't know, either, since his eye only lights up with a large amount of magic. So, for just a moment, Sans calls up that familiar warmth from his soul. When he finally hears the water rhythmically falling down on the tile, he loves the sound. It's the prettiest thing he's ever heard. The Monster might have listened for longer if Doctor Hansen didn't turn off the water. He pushes his magic back down immediately in guilt.

"Here. Use this to dry off", Doctor Hansen signs out the instructions and holds out a towel. Sans takes it, but just stares blankly at it. Hansen smiles a little sheepishly, realizing her mistake. She takes the towel back and starts to dry the top of his skull. The Monster squirms a bit, but doesn't try to get away.

Once he's dry, Hansen walks over to the lockers. She opens one up and pulls out a pile of clothes that she had stashed there earlier. The artificial Monster is confused when she doesn't give him the hospital gown back. Instead, Doctor Hansen pulls a jacket out of the pile.

"The problem is that any clothes I could buy would be way too big on you. There's no meat on your bones. Literally". Sans would have loved the joke if Hansen had signed it. It takes multiple tries for Hansen to get the Monster's arm into the sleeve of the jacket. The sleeves are long enough to have holes in the side for Sans to put his thumbs through. When he has the jacket on, it feels like a wearable blanket. The jacket is unzipped and leaves his ribs and soul plainly visible. The white jacket also has blue fluff lining the inside and edge of the hood.

Next is a pair of black shorts that stop just below Sans's knees. Their attached to a tighter cloth that clings to the Monster's waist, keeping the shorts from falling down his thin frame. Doctor Gaster gave Hansen specific instructions on how to dress it. Sans doesn't look indecent, but it's very clear that he's not human with all the bone showing. The near empty chest cavity is sure to interest the investors.

"That does it! Gaster wanted me to dress you in black and white, but I love that hood", Hansen steps back to examine the Monster, "I can take you back to the observation room now. Gaster won't be here for a training session until later. You should sleep as much as possible now".

Sans understands the open door well enough. Doctor Hansen walks him back to the observation room. Sans is excited to show Papyrus his new clothes. As soon as Hansen leaves, he's looking around for the human boy. The Monster doesn't have to wait long when he turns his head and sees Papyrus sitting next to him. Sans immediately stands back up and holds out his arms to show Papyrus his new jacket.

"Oh! You're not wearing that ugly hospital gown! I always hated wearing those". Papyrus loves the jacket, but he frowns at seeing Sans's soul so visible. "Let me zip it up for you. Mom never liked it when other moms let their kids walk around without proper clothes". Sans watches Papyrus zip it up and down a few times before he tries. It's even cozier zipped up.
