#5 Artificial Magic

Sans woke up the next day when someone shakes his shoulder. He assumes it's Papyrus, and rolls over to see what he has to say. It's not Papyrus. Doctor Hansen smiles when she sees the skeleton awake.

"Hey little guy! It's time to get up. Doctor Gaster's got a lot planned for today", Hansen explains. Sans, mute and deaf once again, doesn't understand. He knows that lady wants him to get up, though, so he does. Sans leave the blanket this time. It would just get taken away again. The skeleton makes sure to cover up the notebook as he slips out of bed.

Doctor Hansen, much to the Monster's dismay, takes him back to the gym. Gaster is waiting, and only looks up from his clipboard for a moment before continuing to write. When Sans gets closer, he looks up at the board. He's baffled by how long some of the words are. Still, he recognizes some syllables that Papyrus used.

"Doctor Hansen, good to see you. I take it the reunion went well?", Doctor Gaster greets her.

"Oh, you know how family is. I knew their marriage wasn't going to last ever since their wedding day", Hansen shrugs, too chipper for the subject.

"Pleasantries aside, how was your morning shift?".

"Alister actually told me that he gave Sans a notebook to write in. He was still awake and drawing in it when my shift started. And there was something else, too, Gaster. The microphones picked up a..... a voice".

"Really?", Doctor Gaster asked, surprised, but he rolls his eyes at the name, "Today might be easier then I thought if it's already learned to use its magic".

The entire conversation is meaningless to Sans. He's just watching their lips move. His attention begins to wander and drift off. There's something new in the room that he didn't notice before. One wall has a few cloth dummies pushed up against it. Sans must not have been paying attention to the adults, because Doctor Gaster taps him on the shoulder.

"It is time for you to use your magic. Can you do that?", Gaster signs. This test is tricky. No Human alive can use magic like a Monster can, and this skeleton isn't even a true Monster. There is no telling how artificial magic will behave. Sans stares at him, confused. What is he supposed to do?

"Can you talk? Like you did last night?", Doctor Hansen signs in her own language. She's excited to see what his magic can do.

Sans doesn't know how he talked last night. That first time was just instinctual. Still, he remembers that pulse of power. It made him feel strong in a world that doesn't make sense. Sans tries to hold onto that feeling, to call to it again. He looks back up at the two Doctors when nothing happens, feeling sheepish, and looks back down. He's just about to give up when he feels something take his hand. Sans turns his head, but no one is there. At the same time, his soul warms. Sans can feel this familiar magic rise up and rest just below the surface, ready to shape.

"........ -maybe he can't do it again. It might have just been a freak thing", Hansen frowns, her voice light and higher then even Papyrus's.

"Have you given it a magic injection this morning? That might help boost it's magic levels", Gaster thinks out loud. His voice is deep, deep enough to rival the voice Sans used last night, but much more gravely. Gaster is the first to notice that Sans is following the speaker with his eyes. He's never done that before. Gaster abruptly turns to address this. "Do you hear me, Monster? Can you hear us talking?"

Sans does hear the question, and Gaster was not speaking with his hands. The artificial magic sits on the surface of his soul and catches the sound. When Sans speaks, it's the same manufactured magic that gives sound to his thoughts.

"Yes. I can hear you", San's mouth doesn't move, but his deep words are clear. His voice is much deeper then a human child's would be, but natural skeletons have no reason for their voice's pitch to change. Their magic projects the sound it's meant to.

"Whoa...... it's voice might be even deeper than yours, Gaster", Hansen can't help her gasp of surprise.

"Hmm, I was sure it's soul was too fragile to handle magic manifestation. How interesting". Gaster seems thoughtful as he looks down at his clipboard and back up at Sans. "Can you describe your magic, Monster? How does it feel to you?".

"Warm". Sans has to think the question over. He's not used to sending thoughts down through his soul and magic. Then, his eyes seem to get a little brighter, suddenly excited. "You can understand me?".

"Yes! We can hear you", Doctor Hansen answers his question, "How do you know what language to speak? Does your magic just copy what you hear?". She's full of questions, but Sans doesn't know how to answer.

"Hansen, can you email Doctor Murphy and Alister to perform a cognitive test on the Monster? Their experience is more suited to that then mine", Gaster asks his coworker, still barely regarding the skeleton. He didn't realize that they'd create an artificial being that's able to ask its own questions.

The skeleton doesn't know how he's understanding everything, either. Sans understood what hand signs Papyrus's words referred to even though he had never heard spoken words. His magic seems to be turning sound into hand signs. He's too new to writing to be able to rely on that. He can only match up a few written syllables to their sounds. All that late night studying is starting to take a toll. Sans can feel the heaviness starting to set in his limbs. He always feels exhausted. Using his artificial magic to hear and speak is making it worse. He must have lost focus again, because Gaster has to snap his fingers in front of Sans's face.

"Are you listening? Using your magic to hear and speak is just a skeleton trait. Monsters can also manifest attack magic. You'll need to be able to do that in order not to stand out in the Underground. If you can't, we'll have to start the next trial". Gaster has been worried for a while now. The sixth report of a Human falling down into Mt. Ebott has really rattled him. They need to be prepared before a seventh falls. "From the little research that remains, skeletons usually could manifest a weapon or ranged attack".

"Manifest? An attack?", Sans asks just to make sure he heard correctly. He's not sure if he can do that or not. He's only begun to test the abilities of his artificial magic.

"You say magic is warm, right? Can you push that warm feeling outside of your body?", Hansen suggests. If all of a Monster's magic comes from their soul, she reasons that it has to be pushed out to manifest anything else.

Sans slowly looks over at the training dummies lining the wall. Manifest an attack? Push on his magic. Right now, his artificial magic sits just below the surface. He couldn't feel it before, but now it hums like electricity throughout his body. Ready. Waiting. Preparing for an attack? It happens easier than he anticipated. Sans pushes his magic just a little hotter, and a hole seems to burst in whatever's holding it inside him. Sans shoves as much magic as he can through that hole.

Doctor Gaster drops his pen when the skeleton's left eye lights up in a blue, flaming color; it's the color of his soul's human half. The right eye light disappears completely. At the same time, a buzzing sound fills the air. Above the artificial Monster, the air starts to shimmer. The empty space seems to condense and waver right before the two Doctor's eyes. A light blue shape is slowly solidifying in the air.

Sans can feel his magic rushing out of him. He couldn't possibly stop it now that the hole has been ripped open so big. Charging, charging, charging up something massive. His magic is rushing, rushing, rushing to fill the demands of such a powerful attack. Just as the shape above him is about to take form, it goes cold. Sans can feel it the moment all his magic has rushed out of the hole, and his soul feels icy cold. And painful. The Monster's left eye goes out, and he collapses to the ground. The manifestation above him shimmers and pops back out of existence.
