#18 One of Us

Papyrus's sudden absence makes Sans stumble when he walks into the next room. The Monster is realizing it more and more that he hates being alone. Everything is better when Pappy is here, but he doesn't like other humans or Monsters. Sans doesn't know exactly what the creature is, but it kinda looks like a frog from one of his brother's drawings. The skeleton immediately flattens himself against the opposite wall in fear.

The other Monster tilts its head and looks at its kin in curiosity. Every Monster in the Underground knows what a human looks like, and most would openly attack, but this pale-faced thing is not a human. Sans's soul is hidden since his jacket is still zipped up. The frog Monster, better known as a Froggit, only croaks out a greeting to its Monster kin and closes its eyes again for a nap. Froggit does not know that the skeleton clan went extinct. It doesn't even know that there shouldn't be any in the Underground. While Monsters tend to have slightly longer lives then humans, only about a forth were born outside these caves. The war damaged the Monster population greatly.

Sans stays frozen against the wall for several more moments. He's sure that the Froggit will attack him any second. When it doesn't open its eyes back up, Sans slowly relaxes again. He's confused. Flowey and the goat lady both either attacked him or seemed like they were about to. The Froggit doesn't care enough to even stay awake. Sans peels himself off the wall and sneaks as quietly as he can around the corner.

"Pappy?", Sans whispers once he gets farther away, "Do you think that was another Monster? They didn't attack us".

"It had to be! The only people in the Underground are Monsters. They all look really different from each other. Some of them must be friendly! We could meet a bunch of new people and a bunch of new friends!". Papyrus skips ahead to walk in front of his brother.

"Doctor Gaster said that everyone down here would want to hurt me......", Sans looks back to the ground and nervously rubs his arm.

"He also said that I wasn't alive anymore. Nobody's right about everything", Papyrus wrinkles his nose at the doctor's name, "Besides, won't it be fun to have more people to play with!? They already love puzzles!".

"I don't know Pappy. I'm scared. What if someone sees my soul again? I think we should avoid everyone for now".

"Ugh, FINE! But I get to solve the next puzzle".

"Thanks! I know you'd have my backbone".

"STOP IT SANS! Make another pun, and we're turning around to find that frog!".

The skeleton laughs, but doesn't try to crack another joke. The two of them keep making their way through the caves. After finding a few signs on the wall, they learn that they're in a place called the 'Ruins'. Papyrus thinks it's fitting since everything is old and cracked. Vines and lichen are growing along the walls. The Ruins are filled lots of puzzles and other Monsters. Pappy loves the puzzles, but Sans is weary of anything that moves. He stays as far away as he can from other Monsters. Most of them don't spare him a second glance.

Eventually, Sans and Papyrus wander into a narrow corridor. Pappy stiffens and hides behind his brother, but doesn't hide completely when they encounter the next Monster. It's large and white, laying across the corridor. There's no way around them. Sans flinches when they admit soft snore. He's never heard anyone sleep but Papyrus.

"They look like they're sleeping", Papyrus mumbles. He's using Sans's shoulder to pull himself up and peek over the Monster's fluffy hood.

"What should we do? There's no way around them".

"I don't know! It's RUDE to disturb someone when they're sleeping. Could you just gently scoot them over a little?".

When Sans tries to wake up the weird Monster or move them over, his hands pass right through. He lurches back in fear, but it's too late. The cave walls around them blackout instantly. A battle. Sans triggered a Monster battle by trying to use force to get his way. The skeleton's left eye flares to life along with his soul and magic.

"Oh, oh no. You want to fight. I usually come to the RUINS to be alone........", the Monster sighs in disappointment. They're no longer pretending to be asleep, and worse, it's their turn to attack.

Sans is confused when they start to cry. The tears well up from the Monster eyes. The skeleton only realized he should be weary when the tears fly at him like bullets. He's learned to be more cautious after his battle with Flowey. Sans's training kicks in this time. He ducks down and then throws himself to the side. The tears are a lot smaller then Santos. The other Monster seems almost relieved that they didn't hit him. It's Sans turn now. He still doesn't want to hurt anyone, but he knows that he can't just offer mercy, either.

Napstablook

This Monster doesn't seem to have a sense of humor.
Napstablook is staring into the distance and wishing they weren't here.

Sans is still taking in the information when Napstablook attacks again. The skeleton is slow, and one of the ghost's tears hits his soul. The sudden bite of pain makes Sans yelp and back up a step. Real fights terrify him to no end. After the first fight with Santos, Sans knew the large human wasn't trying to kill him. Physical attacks are also a lot different then an attack straight to the soul. His HP might be the same for each, but physical attacks are easier to dodge.

He still refuses to fight. Napstablook doesn't seem to register it when Sans offers mercy. The tears keep coming, and they're getting more numerous. Sans darts to the left and ducks to avoid them. When he looks back up, another tear is inches away from hitting his soul. The Monster's magic reacts on instinct. A bone shoots up from the ground and breaks up the tear. That took up Sans's turn. The ghost continues to cry and sends another wave to attack.

Sans gets stuck in that loop for a while. His bones would protect him from any tears he couldn't dodge in time, using up his turn, and Napstablook would attack again right away. Sans can't keep that up forever. His magic is already flagging. He takes another point of damage when a bone doesn't drive up fast enough. He stumbles and almost falls over while dodging the next.

"Sans! You have to try something else! This isn't working", Papyrus's voice speaks up as if he were standing right next to the Monster. He turns to look, but no one is there. Napstablook didn't hear it, and lands another hit when Sans is distracted.

Something different? Sans stands stiffly and fearfully, hesitating now that it's his turn again. All he's been doing is sparing. Nothing is progressing or changing when he does that. Even if he did want to attack with his bones, which he never wants to do, he's getting so so tired. He just wants to sleep. He's never been awake this long. The stress of the day is catching up. This battle isn't helping matters at all.

"I'm tired", Sans shakes his head in an attempt to wake up, "Are you sleepy? I'm sorry for waking you up. I never liked it when the doctors woke me up......". The skeleton is a little confused when the battle registers his talking as his 'turn'.

Napstablook doesn't cry more tears right away this time. "You're tired? I'm sorry, ghosts don't actually sleep. I just like to pretend so the other Monsters won't make fun of me", he sniffles.

"Oh. I'm sorry for ruining it, then. I was just try to move you a little so I c-could get past and to the next room", Sans tries to keep his voice clear when he talks, but he's swaying on his feet.

"I was being a burden? I'm sorry, all I ever do is drag people down...........", Napstablook sighs dejectedly. Sans feels terrible for making the Monster sad, but the fight abruptly ends. Napstablook has fled. He fades away and disappears.

Sans wobbles before he falls forwards onto the hard stone floor of the ruins. His magic is dangerously low from the fight, and he's utterly exhausted. One thing has him utterly confused: whenever he and Napstablook talked, it counted as their turn in the battle. Can battles be talked out instead of fought?

"Are you okay Sans! What do I do? You're hurt.......". Papyrus appears crouched over the Monster, worried and nervous.

"Pappy, I'm okay, just tired", Sans mumbles, vision blurry, "I think I'm gonna sleep now......".

"No! Wait! You have to bring your soul out so I can inject you with magic! Please, Sans, don't fall asleep!", Papyrus begs.

It's too late. Sans's body is already relaxing as sleep takes over. His vision fades out. The last thing he sees is Papyrus abruptly looking up before he disappears.
