#15 Outside
"Where are we going?", Sans asks. He trips over a booted foot and nearly falls before righting himself. It's been two days since the Monster started giving himself all the injections. Even that has now become mundane and routine.
"Everything has worked out so well! We've finally got approval to transport you to the drop off location!", Hansen quickly and excitedly explains. She walks so fast that the Monster falls behind a bit. Hansen only pauses to unlock the great iron door that separates this section of the lab from the rest.
Sans doesn't really understand what she's trying to say, but he does realize that something big is happening; it's even bigger then when all those people cam to see him. The Monster follows down the hall apprehensively. Everything is quiet now. Even when Doctor Hansen pushes the door to the auditorium open, it's quiet. The massive room is empty except for the other three doctors talking quietly on the opposite side of the room.
"Hansen? Come on! We have to be quick. There's already a few camera crews that have been tipped off. More are probably on their way. How'd they know? This project isn't suppose to go public until after it succeeds". Doctor Murphy is a nervous wreck. Sans has never seen his easy smile leave before.
"I'm sorry! It took a while with the injections. I came as soon as I could", Hansen fires back. Her excitement from earlier has dulled down to worry after hearing about the camera crews.
"I still think this is a bad idea. We should hold off until the rumors die down. No one knows exactly what we're doing yet", Alister says while crossing his arms.
"Nonsense. The President has given his approval. He could be pressured into reconsidering if word gets out. We need to do this now". Gaster meets the eyes of the others with a stern gaze.
Sans flinches when Gaster leans down over him. The Doctor zips up the Monster's coat and pulls his hood up. It's skeletal hands and legs are still in plain view, not to mention it would only take a different angle to see it's fleshless face. Doctor Gaster pulls a large blanket off a nearby chair. It's not his blanket, but Sans has no issue with it when Gaster wraps it around the Monster. He's wrapped up in a cocoon of fluff. Sans can barely see what's in front of him with the blanket obscuring his face.
"Do you really think that will work, G? He looks like a kid now", Murphy asks, skeptical.
"A human child is better then an artificial Monster. A child can be explained away. It could be your daughter for all the media can tell, and you didn't want her face on camera", Gaster smiles. Doctor Murphy doesn't look comfortable with the suggestion, but there's no going back now.
"Walk between us, alright, Sans?", Alister sighs, "The less they see, the better".
After the Monster's head bobs under the blanket, Doctor Gaster pushes open a door. Cool air rushes in and tugs at the edges of the blanket. Doctor Hansen is behind Sans and quickly bustles him after Gaster. Doctor Murphy and Alister slip out to walk to either side of him.
The ground sounds weird. Sans notices it immediately. The ground makes a crunching sound underneath his boots and it shifts around. He can only see a little bit of the gray gravel. What's worse is the voices. The loud clamor of voices is all around his again. It's all much closer to him. Sans can't see much with the blanket and how he's hunched over, but for a moment, he looks up. Sans's empty eyes are captured by a camera for just a second he's jerked along. Not all of the live feed's viewers even caught it.
Sudden hands on his waist lift Sans up into the air. Surprised, he would have struggled if he hadn't been set back down again almost instantly. His feet aren't on the ground anymore. Instead, Sans is on his hands and knees on a much softer surface. The Monster has never been in a car before. Doctor Murphy squeezes in next to him before slamming the door closed. The others move around the van to get in on the other side.
"Sans.... we're outside....", Papyrus's happy and faint voice makes Sans pause. The Monster abruptly sits up and pulls the blanket down off his face as the van speeds off. He's facing a window, seated between Murphy and Hansen. His gaze locks there on the glass. The sun is just starting to rise on the horizon. It paints the sky in magnificent shades of red, orange, and yellow. Softer pinks fade away into purples and blues. A few bright stars still dare to challenge the sun's own light. Those same stars quickly replicate themselves. Sans's eye lights shift again. He's absolutely awestruck. The stars disappear once the doctors start talking.
Sans has never seen the sky before. Pappy's drawings could never get close to the real thing. All the greens of the plants only add to the scene. The van shoots along an empty road with only one other vehicle in sight. The Jeep drives just in front of the van, escorting it to its destination.
"Hey, sit back! You still need to wear a seatbelt", Doctor Murphy chides the Monster. He pulls its shoulder to get it properly seated before buckling up the seat belt across Sans's chest. He's still mostly tangled up in the blanket.
"W-What? Where- um, I.....", Sans struggles to form a question. He has so many, not to mention his magic's gone all jittery from nervousness and excitement mixing into one. He can't keep his voice steady. The van hits a rough bump, and the seatbelt keeps the Monster from lurching forwards.
"We're heading to Mt. Ebott. It's only a few miles away, and a team is waiting for us at the Underground's entrance. I can't believe it's finally happening! Sans's tracker is online, right? I can't wait to see how big the Monster's prison actually is". Doctor Hansen's enthusiasm has returned.
They're going to the Underground? Now? Sans knows that this is what he was created for, so he should be happy, right? This is his purpose. He doesn't know exactly what he's doing yet, but soon, he'll start it. That should be a reason to be happy. Yet, all the Monster feels is unease. This doesn't feel right to him.
Pretty soon, the scenery outside the car changes. The road starts slanting upwards. Sans can't quite see how tall the mountain is since he doesn't have a window seat. The van doesn't drive all the way up the road, but only three fourths of the way. This area of the mountain levels out. A temporary fence and gate block the road. Doctor Gaster has to show his keycard to the armed guards. Sans has never seen guns or soldiers before, but he's instinctually wary. More military jeeps had already arrived ahead of them to set up.
Before Sans can see much else, Doctor Murphy opens his door and pulls Sans out after him. He's still partially wrapped up in the blanket. Murphy pulls it off him and tosses it back in the van. Most of the soldiers have stopped to gawk at the Monster. Stares still make Sans uncomfortable. He doesn't have long to dell on it before Doctor is shoving a bag into its arms.
"These are magic injections. They should last about a week, and they won't break", Gaster says, "Take one every few hours, and if you ever feel weak. You wear this bag on your back with the straps". Sans only nods in response. He's not used to things happening so fast, and it's overwhelming him.
"Come on, the crane is already set up. All we have to do now is debrief him and get the harness on", Alister says in a worried voice. All these soldiers are sure to have attracted attention.
Gaster agrees, and after Sans gets the backpack on correctly, the doctor leads him over to the Underground's entrance. This flat area of the mountain has an overhang that forms a shallow cave. Under this overhang is a massive pit. It drops down so far that the light doesn't reach the bottom. Sans can only stare at the dark depths. Some sort of machine has been set up above the hole. It has an electric reel with a thick cord that's attached to a small chest harness.
"Now listen, Sans. You're going into the Underground today", Gaster's voice drops lower with his seriousness, "We do not know how large it is, but we do know that the cave system is one long tunnel. You'll have to go through the entire thing to find the Barrier. It's the only way out. There are six humans that have fallen down before you. A seventh could break the barrier and free the Monsters".
"So..... you want me to destroy them? To kill the human souls? Wouldn't they be faded and dead by now?", Sans's voice shakes. This is his purpose for living?
"The Monsters wouldn't let this opportunity pass. The humans soul are either being preserved, or a Monster has already absorbed them. You have to destroy them either way, Sans".
Doctor Gaster had more to say, and Sans had more questions and protests, but there was no time. A car slams on its break just before it crashes into the closed gate. There are more behind the first, all coming to investigate the government project. The artificial Monster is in plain view.
Hands are grabbing at the Monster and slipping the harness over his head before Sans can understand what's happening. Camera crews are arriving to be met with gun barrels. Sans yelps when his feet leave the ground. He's yanked back by the harness to dangle over the dark pit. It's too much. Everything is happening too fast. Sans looks up in time to see the crowd of cars and people gathering behind the fence. They see him now. They see the Monster.
Gaster slams the crank's lever down. The rope starts to drop and unravel quick enough to go slack for a moment. Sans's soul shutters in fear inside his rib cage. The lip of the pit quickly hides the two groups of panicking humans. The rope goes taunt again, and to the Monster's horror, he feels the harness jerk upwards. It's not designed for a Monster, never less a skeleton. His arms slip out without much resistance. He tries to grab back on it the harness, he really tries to latch on, but his hand closes a second too late. Sans screams.
