#12 Presentation
It's the morning of the next day, or at least that's what time Papyrus said it was, when Doctor Hansen came for Sans. She took him back to the women's locker room to bathe him again. Sans used his magic to happily listen to the water. He got to keep his jacket and shorts afterward. The only difference was that this time, Hansen also gave Sans a pair of boots that are the same shade of light blue as the fluff on his hood. It took a while for him to get used to wearing shoes. Doctor Hansen took him back to his room, and Sans got to sleep after that.
Strangely, the Monster didn't wake up to more tests. He sits up in bed, groggy. Sans doesn't usually get to sleep uninterrupted for as long as he just had.
"Sans! You're awake!", Papyrus cheers, popping his head up over the edge of the bed. "I was waiting to hide from the doctors, but nobody has come to get you".
It takes a moment for Sans to manifest a voice after waking up. "R-Really? I usually have to go every few hours. Do you think something bad happened?".
"I don't think it's something bad, but it's definitely new. Everything in this place is so BORING! I wanna go outside and see the stars again. I think you'd really like the stars, Sans".
Before the Monster can ask what stars are, the door to his room finally opens. Papyrus disappears right away without a word. After Gaster threatens to have them both killed, he doesn't want to be found out, either. Doctor Murphy walks in with a bundle of magic injections and a smile on his face.
"Hey, Sans! Sorry to keep you waiting, but Gaster decided that he wanted you to get some extra sleep. Today is a pretty big day for you. I just gotta give you some injections before we go meet up with the others", Murphy quickly explains. He uncaps the first needle and draws out Sans's soul.
The Monster looks away, but he's used to the sickening prick. "What's so special about today? You've left me all by my bone-some". Sans chuckles at his own joke.
"That's a good one!", Doctor Murphy smirks, "In all seriousness, though, a lot of people are coming to see you today. They're investors, mostly. The Vice President is also coming to see if you're ready to send into the Underground".
"Is the Vice President important?", Sans asks. He doesn't know exactly what the doctors want him to do, but Sans has slowly been piecing conversations together. There is a place called the Underground. It's a prison for..... something. Humans can't go down there. Sans has to go instead to do something. That's all he really knows.
Murphy splutters a little on the question. He never considered that the Monster would need to know about the government. "Well, the Vice President is one of the most important men in the country. All the people who are coming are very important. Doctor Gaster wanted me to remind you not to talk unless one of them asks you a direct question. You have to try your best today on anything we tell you to do".
"Okay. I'll try", Sans nods. Is this what all the tests have been for? He wants to do well.
After Doctor Murphy is done with three magic injections, more then the usual, he takes the artificial Monster out into the hall. It follows behind without being told. They walk past the gym, past the office, and then past the locker rooms. Sans has never been this far down the hallway. There's a large, metal door at the end. Doctor Murphy pauses here to fish out his keycard and unlock the door. Sans jumps a little at the loud BEEP the door makes when unlocking. The little light on the card swipe turns green. Murphy then swings the door open and motions the Monster through.
Sans pokes his head out and looks both ways before stepping out. This new hallway is lined with metal doors just the same as the one Doctor Murphy let him out of. There's a strange sound coming from down the right side of the hallway, hidden by large swinging doors. With a burst of curiosity, Sans realizes that the sound is a low mummer of many voices talking at once. Two Doctors wait for them in the hallway.
"You certainly took your time with those injections. Gaster can only entertain our guests for so long", Alister frowns at Murphy's tardiness.
"Some of the investors are getting impatient. It's a bit of our fault, too, for showing off the other teams' minor projects first. This facility is for more then just our work", Hansen shrugs.
"So what? You wanted me to rush the injections? Can you imagine how pissed G would be if I damaged the soul now?", Murphy shoots back.
Sans doesn't pay much attention to their conversation. He's enthralled by the idea of that many people being in one place. When the three doctors finally end their conversation and start walking down the hall, Alister has to tell Sans to slow down and stay close to him. The mass of voices get louder with each step. Murphy speeds up to get to the door first. He gives Sans a look of warning before pushing it open. The Monster obediently walks between him and Doctor Hansen.
The space is large, larger then the gym, and packed full of people. Some of them wear white lab coats like Gaster. Most are dressed in black suits and dress pants. The people crowd around scattered tables to examine other projects and inventions that had been made in the lab. A large space has been left open at the front with a raised stage beyond that. Many people are milling around the area, waiting. A few nearby people look over in expectation when the three doctors and their project walk in. The skeleton is in plain view. It's jacket is unzipped, revealing the hybrid soul that Doctor Gaster had worked so hard on. It's pure white bones are empty of any muscle or skin. Conversations stop and heads turn to stare.
The Monster had initially been excited to see where all the voices were coming from, but as the noise starts to fade away, he can feel countless eyes gawking at him. He doesn't like it. Sans starts to walk so close to Doctor Murphy that he starts to step on the back of the man's shoes. The small group walks all the way across the room and to the stairs that lead up to the stage. Doctor Gaster has been waiting for them, and surprisingly, Sergeant Santos is standing next him. Santos has traded his flexible sport clothes for a high collared dress shirt. He refused to wear anything resembling a suit. Doctor Murphy sets one hand on Sans's shoulder and directs him to stand between Gaster and Alister as they line up.
"Attention, please, the main event of the night is about to begin", Doctor Gaster turns to face the audience as he speaks. Sans stares at the black microphone wrapped around the doctor's face. It makes his voice louder and echo around the room.
The few guests that didn't see the group walk on stage quickly turn their attention to him. Sans shifts uncomfortably on his feet. Everyone is staring at his empty rib cage and gently pulsing soul. He feels even more naked than when Hansen bathed him. Sans knows that Gaster is talking some more, but his magic has dropped. He's scared of all the upturned faces. It made his magic shudder and curl back up in his soul like it's also trying to hide. He's deaf for several minutes. Sans looks around at the doctors instead of the crowd. He only notices Santos is talking by the way the man gestures as he speaks. The Sargent also has a microphone. Curious about what he's saying, Sans forces his magic to warm up again and come out of hiding.
"........ and I've taught Monster combat for over a decade. Doctor Gaster contacted me to teach the artificial Monster. Although some of his stats are low, I genuinely believe it'll be ready to send into the Underground", Santos finishes.
"Now, are there any questions? A demonstration of the Monster's combat abilities will follow after. The only thing I cannot disclose is the manufacturing of the artificial soul", Doctor Gaster asks. His declaration is met with raised hands and shouted answers. Almost the entire crowd has questions. They ask about the Monster's eye lights and it's fleshless bones. They ask about the artificial magic that sustains it. A few try to learn about the soul's composition, but Doctor Gaster will only say that the donor was willing and that the memories and personality were gone; he said that Papyrus was gone.
"What about it's sentience? Can the Monster speak?", a woman asks, holding a small notebook to write down the answer.
"It learns very quickly. It can read and write, as well as speak", Gaster nods. This has been going extremely well. He wants to show off all he has worked on. Gaster takes his microphone off and clips it to the collar of the Monster's hood. "Go on, Sans. Introduce yourself".
Sans is rooted to the spot. He looks up at the crowd that's waiting to hear him speak. The Monster starts to shake in fear. He stumbles back and runs behind Gaster. Sans latches onto Santos's legs and hides his face. "Too many people. I'm scared", Sans's muffled voice is amplified by the microphone.
Gaster immediately reaches over and pulls the microphone off. That's not what he wanted the audience to hear. "That's all the time that we have for questions. A demonstration of the Monster's abilities will begin in approximately ten minutes".
