"We bring gifts." Harley brushed through the open door, a small bag hanging from his arm.
"We don't bring gifts. I bring gifts," Peter said indignantly. "Because I am a great child. You bring nothing but trouble."
"He's correct." Tony grinned at the two, his smile softening. "Hey Pete. I hear you two watched Tangled without me."
"His fault," Harley said quickly. "My vote was for Legally Blonde."
"You love Tangled," Peter said dryly. "Shut up. I've got breakfast."
Tony clapped his hands together gleefully, hiding a wince at the movement. "Bring it over."
"I found the German version of biscuits and gravy," Peter started, but was quickly interrupted.
"Where's my biscuits and gravy?" Harley folded his arms petulantly, sinking onto the edge of the bed.
"I brought you strawberry strudel, you big baby." Peter pulled out a plastic container, handing it to his dad. "Here you go. Spoon's inside."
With a grateful smile, Tony took a bite.
Harley pouted.
Peter pretended not to notice, dropping his backpack at the side of the bed.
Harley stuck out his bottom lip.
Peter ignored him.
Harley sighed heavily.
Finally, Peter turned back, unable to hide the smile any longer. "See, I knew you'd do this."
Harley turned to face the window, struggling to hide the smile threatening to break through.
He managed it for approximately ten seconds, just long enough for Peter to hold another plastic container under his nose.
"That's why I got you some too."
He grinned widely, tipping his head back to see Peter standing behind him. "You're amazing."
"I know." Peter shrugged one shoulder, his smile soft. "Eat up."
He turned back to Tony, who was watching the pair fondly. "What's new with Rhodey?"
Tony smiled tightly, running his right hand over his face. "He'll be transferred to a hospital upstate, where we can all be close to him, but still be at home most of the time. We need to get you two back to school."
"No hurry," Harley chimed in. "I hate math."
"As I was saying, the recovery's going to be long and hard, but in time, he'll regain some feeling. Most likely never walk again by himself, but I'll make some prosthetic braces to help with that."
"We'll help with that." Peter sat on the bed, legs crossed. "Some young, fresh perspectives might be useful."
"Are you calling me old?"
"We aren't calling you young," Harley said cheerfully- far too cheerfully.
"Absolutely not," Peter agreed. "Wouldn't dream of it. We would never insult you like that."
Tony stared at them, deadpan, before giving a rueful shake of his head. "I walked right into that one."
"You really did."
"Like a fly into a spiders web."
Harley laughed suddenly, shaking his head. "An accurate metaphor."
"Oh my god." Peter dropped his face into his hands, groaning helplessly. "I hate you so much."
Throwing him an easy grin, Harley leaned back against the foot board. "Nah. I'm adorable."
Peter rolled his eyes, but said nothing.
Tony shifted in his seat, wincing again.
"You should still be checked in too," Peter said softly, all joking gone from his tone. "You're not okay."
"I am as fine as I'm going to get," Tony said firmly. "I'll have someone check me over when we get back, okay? I'll be fine."
Peter narrowed his eyes, but let it slide for the moment. "When exactly is this happening? Is the plane going to be the same one Happy brought me on or...?"
"Probably." Tony leaned back against the pillow, closing his eyes. "I'm taking a nap. Wake me up when he gets here."
Harley pulled out his phone, idly scrolling through something.
Peter watched a Youtube compilation of himself.
"Hey." Harley tapped his shoulder, hiding a grin. "What do you get when you cross a snowman and a vampire?"
"I don't have a clue."
"Frostbite."
"Oh my god."
Peter scuffed a foot against the edge of the door frame. "Yeah, we're about to get on the plane."
"M-hm." He could hear clattering on the other end, May sounding slightly breathless. "Are you gonna be coming here to the apartment or the tower?"
"I was planning on going to the tower tonight, since it would be really late, and then coming to the apartment tomorrow. Sound good?"
"Yup. How are things going with Tony? You guys doing okay?"
"Oh yeah, it's great." Peter scuffed his foot against the smooth floor. "Uh... we talked it out, kind of. Or we talked something out. I don't know. We've both got other things to think about. "
"Yeah. Pepper told me that they're taking a break."
"Yeah." He sat slowly on the unmade bed. "They are."
"How's he handling it?"
"Better than I expected, honestly." Peter sighed. "But it's going to be weird, cause she's like... I'm used to her being there. It's going to be different."
"Well, you can still see her, of course. She's still CEO."
"That's not the same, May."
"I know baby. How about we go out for the day when you get here? Hm? Get some Thai?"
"Yeah, sure."
"We could invite Ned?"
"Just me and you sounds good. Maybe Ned the next time?"
"Alright. I'll see you tomorrow then."
"Yeah. Love you."
"Larb you."
The plane landed at a quarter past midnight, leaving them all groggy and eager to get to their own beds.
Tony left them at the door of the penthouse, yawning tiredly as he headed for his own rooms, and Harley and Peter were left in the semi darkness.
"You owe me a movie night now," Harley said quietly. "Legally Blonde. No excuses."
Peter smiled back at him, giving a weary shrug. "As long as we watch Lord Of The Rings too."
"That hardly compares," he said in mock indignation. "Rings is like three and a half hours long. Besides, we already watched your pick."
"Deal or no deal."
"You suck."
When Peter merely raised an eyebrow, extending his hand, Harley gave in, taking it with a put upon sigh. "Deal."
They shook on it, and Peter grinned again. "You do realize this is going to lead into watching all of them in order, followed by the Hobbit movies?"
"I figured," he said casually.
"Good."
It was then that they realized that they were still holding hands.
"Sorry." They spoke in unison, pulling away.
"It's- it's okay." Harley laughed awkwardly, hand on the back of his neck to hide the flush of pink. "Sorry."
"No, it's- it's fine." Peter blinked, wide eyed, and took a step back. "I'll just-"
He backed into the couch, mumbling a curse under his breath as he hit his foot on the corner.
"I thought your spidey sense protected you from stuff like that," Harley said brightly, tryjng to smoothly change the subject.
"It does," Peter muttered under his breath, turning to push at the couch irritatedly. "When I'm not flustered by-"
"By what?"
Peter yelped as Harley spoke from behind his shoulder, much closer than he’d thought. "Don't do that!"
"Do what?" Harley smiled innocently. "I'm very curious as to what has you flustered."
The other teen leaned against the back of the couch, arms crossed, with a faint smile on his face.
Peter stared at him blankly. "Your inability to mind your own business."
"Ouch." Harley raised his eyebrows, smile falling. "I'll leave you to it, then."
He turned to leave, but was only a few steps from the couch before Peter grabbed his arm, pulling him to a stop.
"I'm sorry," he said quickly. "That was uncalled for."
"Little bit, yeah." Harley shrugged faintly.
Peter fidgeted awkwardly for a minute, fingers alternately loosening and tightening, before giving a soft sigh. "I didn't mean it. Feel free to... not mind your business at any time."
"I'll keep that in mind."
They stood there for a brief, tense moment.
The easy camaraderie had vanished, leaving both of them tongue-tied.
"Sorry," Peter said again.
"It's fine," Harley shrugged quickly. "I should get to bed anyway."
"Yeah." The other teenager nodded slowly, one hand rubbing at his other arm. "Yeah. Me too. I'll-?"
"See you tomorrow."
"Yeah."
Harley left the room quickly, and Peter slumped down on the couch, staring morosely at his feet.
These idiots, amiright?
