Three Wishes

Last oneshot out of the four! Happy Halloween! :)

Tyler drummed his fingers on his steering wheel as he drove. Humming to the song playing through his aux cord, he continued his way to his destination. His phone interrupted the sweet sounds of Queen by telling him to turn right in 800 feet. The screen told him five more minutes. He was excited to get there. Excited enough to drive thirty minutes outside of Columbus to visit this place. That didn't even include the time it took him to get through the large city on a Sunday afternoon with light traffic.

There was subtle rain, the noise of the windshield wipers on Tyler's silver 2013 Ford Focus emitting a soft sweeping noise every thirty second. The lanyard hanging from his mirror waved back and forth as the air blew. It was actually from a meet and greet concert pass from a concert he had been to a few months ago and every time he saw it it made him smile.

Shortly after getting the reminder on his phone, he pulled into the gravel parking lot of a small thrift store. A big banner hung from the awning that read 'CLOSING: EVERYTHING 50% OFF!'

Tyler had seen the ad on Instagram displaying that they were going out of business and were trying to get rid of everything in the store. He was a sucker for thrifting and had been doing it before it was cool, as snobby as it sounded. He grew up relatively poor since his mom stayed home to raise him and his three younger siblings while his dad worked a nine to five six days a week so they got a lot of their clothes from Goodwill and Salvation Army that Tyler later passed down to his brothers. Although they were pretty well off now since his mom had gotten a job four years ago when Tyler was thirteen, he still liked to go shopping at second hand stores. It brought a sense of nostalgia and completely made him forget about how pissed he was that it was now considered trendy so many years later thanks to people like Emma Chamberlain.

He shut his car off and with it ceased the music and the heat. Running a hand through his hair, he tugged on his hood from his yellow sweatshirt and grabbed his phone before getting out. He hurried through the rain and October air, finally reaching the door and pulling it open.

As soon as he walked in, a tiny bell above the doorway went off and the woman at the counter snapped her head up from where she was looking before. Tyler noticed the book on the counter and assumed she had been reading until he walked in. She had wavy blonde hair and bright blue eyes and couldn't be any older than twenty. "Hello," she greeted softly with a smile.

"Hey," Tyler smiled back.

"In case you didn't see the huge sign everything is half off. We just wanna clear out shop," she laughed slightly. "If you need anything I'll be right over here. My name's Jenna."

"Thanks," Tyler nodded before walking further into the store. He did want to look around the store and view clothes and such but he was also on a mission. He was on the hunt for a new lamp since his youngest brother, Jay, broke his last one with his basketball.

He went further and further into the store until he reached the appliance section and a lot of the things there were old or broken, which made him realize why they may have been going out of business. His eyes scanned the shelves before stopping on one lamp in particular. It was exactly the type of lamp he was looking for— a regular old desk lamp. It was mainly black with bits of silver throughout and it looked pretty good despite it just being really dusty. There was a tag on it that said 'WORKS!' in scratchy handwriting so he shrugged and picked it up, deciding to take a chance on it.

Tyler looked around the store a bit more, finding a few other things he liked. About twenty minutes after walking in he made his way back over to the counter but this time had the lamp, a few shirts, a sweatshirt, and a copy of Stephen King's The Shining.

"This is the most anyone's bought in months," Jenna laughed as she began adding up the numbers on the price tags into the cash register. He noticed she didn't do any scanning and it was another justification for why they were closing: they were out-dated.

"I'm a sucker for thrift stores. I do this kind of stuff a lot so I just know how to look for the good stuff," he replied, getting his wallet out.

"Still," she continued. "You can probably tell why we're going out of business," she gestured to the area around them. "Everything is old or broken. That lamp is the newest thing we have and we got it six months ago. I mean maybe it's a good sign this place is shutting down. My grandparents have owned it for decades and living with them my most of my life made this place kind of grow on me," Jenna looked up. "I'm sorry. You didn't ask for my life story. $7.50"

"No, you're good," Tyler shook his head as he took a ten dollar bill out. "I know the feeling. All good things must come to and end though. If it makes you feel any better I drove like forty five minutes from my house in Columbus to come here."

"Well thank you," she began to get his change but he stopped her.

"Keep the change. Even if it can't help the store in anyway you could always buy a pack of gum or something with it," he cracked a smile.

"I can't take money from you."'

"It's not taking if I'm giving it to you. I'm a sucker for thrift stores, remember?"

Jenna bagged up his clothes and book and slid the lamp towards him. "You're too nice. Have a wonderful day. Happy Halloween!"

"Happy Halloween," Tyler replied before grabbing his stuff.

---

Tyler was currently cleaning his room to get ready for the school day he had tomorrow. It was eleven at night and he should have been sleeping but he couldn't fall asleep so he decided to clean instead. His siblings and parents were asleep, his youngest brother being tired from trick or treating earlier since he was only eleven.

His room was almost done and all he had left to do was dust his lamp and plug it in to see if it worked. So that's exactly what he did, he began wiping the side of it and turned around to get the dusting spray he brought upstairs.

However, when he turned around, he almost pissed himself.

The lamp began shaking. It moved for a few seconds before a cloud of smoke emitted and Tyler thought it was on fire. The smoke didn't last long though and once it cleared the lamp was still on his desk— perfectly fine.

Except now he had another person in his room.

"Don't scream," was the first thing the stranger said.

Tyler, of course, did not listen.

You wouldn't have either if some random guy entered your room out of nowhere at eleven at night.

He only got half a second of a scream out before the guy clasped his hand over Tyler's mouth. Tyler suddenly heard footsteps and his door banged open. His dad was standing in his doorway with a baseball bat. "Tyler! Are you okay?"

Tyler blinked and looked between his dad and the stranger for a moment. "Do you not see the..."

"See what, Tyler?" Chris sighed and lowered the bat.

"The uh... the spider," he lied. "I thought I saw a spider on my wall. It must've been a hole or something," he laughed sheepishly, trying to ignore the guy standing next to him who was holding back a laugh.

"I thought you were hurt," his dad put his hand over his heart. "Don't do that again," he said sternly. "And go to bed!"

"Will do, sorry Dad."

Chris just gave him a pointed look before shutting the door and walking off. Tyler waited for the footsteps to disappear before turning back to this stranger. "What the hell?" He whisper yelled.

"I told you not to scream," he sighed before laying down on Tyler's bed and stretching. "It feels so good to do that. Six whole months I was stuck in there. Thank God you rescued me."

"Don't lay on my bed," Tyler snapped. "Who are you? What is going on? Why are you in my room? Why couldn't my dad see you? Why are you acting like a crackhead?"

He sat up and gave Tyler a lopsided grin. "I'm Josh. I'm sitting in your room. I'm in your room because you summoned me through the lamp. Your dad couldn't see me because I can make myself visible and invisible to anyone I please— except the person that summons me will always see me until I have fulfilled my job. And that hurts. I don't know why you think I'm acting like a crackhead when you're the one seeing things."

Tyler was genuinely at a loss for words. "You- what- the lamp-"

"I'm a genie. Y'know, Aladdin? The lamp? Three wishes?"

"Genies don't exist. You're one of those Halloween crazies and I'm calling the police," Tyler reached for his phone but it disappeared off his desk. He looked over and Josh know had it in his hand. "Okay maybe you do exist."

"They always stop doubting when I bust out the teleportation," he laughed.

"Wait don't genies live in oil lamps or something?"

"Norm from the Fairly Odd Parents lived in a lava lamp," Josh shrugged. "If I exist anything is possible isn't it. Besides... no one wants an oil lamp. My sole purpose is to serve others and I need to actually reach people to do that. And desk lamps are obviously in the market."

"What am I supposed to do with you?" Tyler asked.

"I dunno. That's up to you, dude," Josh smiled at him. "You only have three wishes so make it count."
