31. Return of the Nullifiers
Malia and Soril were engaged in a fierce battle. The man's blows were significantly stronger than those the girl could deliver. Additionally, Inugami running around didn't make things easier. Finally, the girl decided to summon a titan. "Keep him busy, Vionil!" A woman with two black braids appeared next to Lyssa. Her weapon was a scythe with a large blade. She was dressed in silver armor with navy blue accents.
"At least this way, I could let you fight" Malia thought. The female warrior charged at the dog. She sliced through the air twice, but the third time she grazed Inugami's paw.
Cathy used Camoforge to slip through the battle-filled field. She was in enemy territory. The girl looked at the paper with a drawing of the corridors and the key points marked on them. "Wow. Things have changed a bit since Harrison's time" she muttered to herself, looking around. The terrain on the map and in reality only partially matched.
"Hello, cutie. How did you get here?" a voice asked. Lambert turned towards the person. Behind her stood Arnetta. She quickly distanced herself from her.
"None of your business how I got here. Just tell me where you're keeping my mother!" she replied, fire in her eyes.
"It'll be better if I take you to her. In handcuffs" the woman responded, snapping her fingers. Unexpectedly, a group of four people in black and white outfits appeared behind the Spiral woman.
"Wow. No fun with you. You immediately call your subordinates to take down an amateur like me?" Cathy tried to provoke her.
"I prefer to save my strength for the Casterwills rather than someone from the Foundation," Arnetta replied.
Out of the corner of her eye, the girl spotted a distinctive person with orange hair.
"To cuff me, you'll have to fight whether you like it or not!" Cathy summoned Tarnac. "Powerbonded Tarnac, create three copies of the Freelancer. I need time" she said telepathically to her companion.
The wizard obeyed her command. The cloned titans charged at the Spiral ones. Lambert went at Arnetta. She attacked her precisely. She was alone, so she had to be more cautious than never.
"I didn't expect you to be such a handful" the woman said.
"Nice to hear" she replied.
They continued their physical battle. At some point, the woman with orange hair came up behind Arnetta. She immobilized her hands. "Run straight and turn left. I'll take care of her." she said to Lambert. When the woman moved away from her "boss", she took off her mask.
"What happened to you, Vensetta?!" Vale asked, surprised.
"There's someone who wants to talk to you very much." Moon replied.
She pulled out the King Basilisk's amulet. Taking advantage of the confusion, Cathy fled in the direction indicated by her companion.
"Mom!" she called out, looking around. At some point, she spotted her. She was sitting in a cell with Cherit. "I'm freeing you now" Lambert said. She used Touchram to break the iron bars. Unexpectedly, she was attacked by Harlekin. She fell helplessly to the ground.
"The Huntik Foundation has come to visit us again?"
Cathy turned her head towards the male voice. She noticed an elderly man with gray hair standing before her, holding a wooden cane. He wanted to cast a spell at her, but at the last moment, he knelt down.
"Run away from here!" Sandra said to her daughter.
"You won't escape. I won't allow it" the old man replied weakly.
He tried to stand, but his legs gave out again. Meanwhile, Harlekin stood over the girl, preparing for another attack.
"Keep him busy, Lunar, Solar!" the girl summoned the fairies.
Cathy used Everfight and cast Augerfrost toward the titan. Quickly, she moved to her mother and Cherit. She unfastened their shackles, which had been blocking their powers. Lambert took her mother by the arm. The woman was very weak. The orange figure attacked Harlekin with a beam of light. The blue titan covered their rear. As the Lamberts exited the corridor, they saw Zhalia accompanied by stone statues.
"Is everything okay?" Moon asked.
"Yes" Cathy replied, glancing down the corridor she had just left. "Some weird guy attacked me."
"That must be Tantras. He recently started getting out of bed. Let's join the others" she said.
Zhalia began to head towards the exit, but Cathy stopped her: "Wait. Do you know where the throne of the Betrayer is?" she asked.
"Does she want to sacrifice her life in exchange for activating the mark? That's crazy" Den stated.
"We need to prepare for the worst" Dante said. He pressed a button on his earpiece. "Metz. Be ready. The Nullifiers might show up soon" he conveyed.
"How? You destroyed the comet" his mentor responded.
"Now is not the time for explanations."
"Casterwills. Regroup" Sophie instructed her family members.
Unexpectedly, Spiral members all over the battlefield fell to the ground again, clutching the spiral mark tattooed on their bodies. The red sphere intensified in color. Soon, all members of the enemy faction were surrounded by a luminous glow. Streams of energy emerged from each Spiral member, converging into a massive column of power at the Spiral Mark.
"Let's move back" Dante ordered. The seekers retreated to the suits and other Foundation members standing further from the mark. In the meantime, Metz and the researchers' seekers also arrived. In the distance, two women and a small titan appeared. Dante and Lok headed towards them, followed by another seeker.
"Cathy, Mom!" Lambert shouted.
"Where's Zhalia? Didn't she come with you?" Vale asked.
"She was coming, but she fainted. She told us to go on and not worry about her," Cathy replied.
"I'll show her 'don't worry'." the man thought.
"Wow. My stamina is terrible" said the woman who caught up with the seekers. "You all don't look too good either."
"Could you take care of my mom? The medics' unit is far, and she can't go any further" Cathy asked.
"That was the plan. You'll need to cover me until then" she nodded.
"That won't be necessary, mom" Malia appeared.
"You're back, my dear" her mother said with tears in her eyes.
"Heal the wounded, Legendary Titan of Life, Eladriel!" she tried to summon the titan. "Uh, not good. I don't have enough power."
"I won't be able to fight for the next few days. If you can do it, take as much power from me as you need," Sandra Lambert said.
"That's very noble of you" Mrs. Lyssa replied.
Malia took Mrs. Lambert's hand. Soon, an orange energy illuminated them. "Powersorb" the girl said.
Unexpectedly, at the location of the Spiral Mark, the red sphere ceased. Soon, huge creatures began to emerge from the hole, emitting a terrifying screech. Terror gripped the seekers across the battlefield. "They're really here" Sophie noted, frightened.
The Nullifiers were beings with elongated heads resembling lying cylinders, thin arms, and hands with enormous four fingers. Their characteristic features also included hunched posture and stick-like legs. "It's not too late to send them back" Den said.
"Den's right. We need to attack before more of them arrive" Harrison agreed.
"We're weakened. Fighting them will end in our defeat" Sophie stated.
"You might be, but we can still fight" Metz interjected.
"I'm a Casterwill. I shouldn't hide in the back. I won't agree to that!" the girl clenched her fist.
After a moment, the others joined them. "A special delivery straight from the Betrayer's throne" Cathy said, handing a white staff with a red crystal to Sophie.
"Let them fight. Let's move away" Malia suggested.
The team and Sandra Lambert moved to a safer distance. The girl summoned Eladriel. In the distance, Dante was running with Zhalia in his arms. Once they reached them, the titan placed everyone in his healing bubble.
"It's pretty soft in here" Harrison noted.
"Ah, right. You've never been here" Malia laughed.
"Whatever happens, be careful. The Nullifiers are far more dangerous than the Spiral itself. We defeated the Death Spiral once, and we must do it again" Lok addressed the group.
"We've all prepared for the worst-case scenario" Dante stated.
The seekers, having regained their strength, left the healing bubble.
"Go to the other medics. They surely need Eladriel's power" Lok said to his friend.
The girl nodded. Then she turned her back on her friends and walked slowly ahead, accompanied by Sandra and the titan. Zhalia felt better and stayed to help the others.
"Don't you dare die, especially you..." Malia whispered to herself.
She paused and looked over her shoulder. She saw the rest of the team heading in the opposite direction. Harrison glanced back at her. They both smiled at each other. They turned away almost simultaneously. The girl began running towards the Foundation medics' base, while Fears caught up with the rest of the team.
"I'll run ahead to check what's happening at the unit. If I'm gone for a while, it means there's a lot of work" Lyssa said.
Sophie summoned Sabriel, and Lok summoned Baselaird. His sister summoned the Freelancer. Harrison called Jericho, and his older brother chose Vigilante.
"The fight is just beginning" the leader said.
"We'll kick their butts and go home" Den added.
Fears used Cindercloak. The team moved forward. Other groups from the Foundation, Casterwills, and the Organization were fighting against huge monsters. Seekers ran among them, transporting wounded comrades to the medics' unit.
Lok and his friends were dealing with two Nullifiers. The key was to keep them close to the Spiral Mark as possible. Lambert used Overslam to knock down one of the creatures. The opponent fell. The blond boy turned back towards his friends, constantly watching the Nullifier's movements. Sabriel, Jericho, and Baselaird passed him and attacked the opponent together. Jericho struck its face, and the other two drove their swords into its stomach. Additionally, Den hit the opponent's arm with Raypulse, preventing it from hitting the two charging titans. The monster let out a guttural scream. Unexpectedly, its body melted into a dirty gray goo and immediately seeped into the ground.
"Did we defeat it?" Lok wondered aloud after standing next to Den.
Moments later, the second Nullifier fell. Sophie, Harrison, and Cathy had defeated it. Its end was the same as its colleague's moments ago.
"It seems they don't regenerate like the Betrayer" the older Fears noted.
"It doesn't change the fact that more of them are still coming out of the portal" Sophie interjected and pointed to more incoming Nullifiers.
Malia and the titan reached the unit. She noticed the medics were exhausted. She immediately ordered Eladriel to restore power to her comrades. "Where were you when you were needed?" her uncle asked.
"I'll explain later. We have a very, very serious problem on the front" she replied.
"Is it because of that red column of energy?" Albert asked.
She nodded. Eladriel, following his owner's command, hiding everyone in a healing bubble.
Metz, Dante, and the suits defeated another creature. They faced another enemy standing behind its fallen comrade. Determination to stop the monsters known only from stories was visible in all the seekers' eyes. At that moment, the situation was relatively stable. The Nullifiers hadn't been given the chance to stray far from the mark, signaling a good start to the fight.
Sophie was attacking a Nullifier with a Kindlestrike when she received a message from Focauld in her earpiece.
"Lok, it's time" she conveyed over the link.
"Cathy, let's begin" Casterwill girl relayed.
"Den, now" Lok said.
The four seekers summoned their Legendary Titans. Geomar immediately ensnared nearby creatures with his strong vines. Feathery Griffon pushed several Nullifiers back into the pit with a steady stream of wind. Lir helped Vivian's group by trapping a monster in a water cage. Inferno set several huge enemies ablaze.
The titans formed a square. Sophie stood in the center. She drove the staff into the ground. The creatures channeled their energy into the Staff of Destiny.
After a moment, one of Nullifiers broke through a group of suits. He headed straight for Sophie. The girl watched him in terror and helplessness. Sabriel stood in defense but was defeated with a single yank. Unexpectedly, Lucas and his companions stood before the giant.
"We've got your back. Do what you need to" he said.
"Lucas" Sophie said, moved.
The girl focused her strength on the Staff. Soon, a multicolored sphere appeared at the center of the action, shimmering in white, blue, red, and green.
Lucas and Templar charged towards the monster. The Wildwood Druid bound the Nullifier's legs using her power of nature. After the leader of the three-person team attacked, the remaining two hit the monster between the eyes with Kindlestrike. The massive opponent roared in pain. He quickly shook it off and formed a dark tornado heading their way.
"Raypulse" they said at the same time. The spell hit the dark vortex, which then redirected the attacks towards them. The seekers dodged them.
"How do we defeat this thing?" Lane wondered.
Suddenly, a group of suits headed their way.
"Perfect timing" Delix muttered.
"Take care of the vortex. We'll keep fighting the Nullifier" Lucas ordered the newcomers.
Dante and Zhalia were battling another giant. They executed coordinated attacks, covering each other's gaps. Gareon launched single attacks from a distance. Using his camouflage, he avoided the Nullifier's counterattacks. Each time he reappeared in a different place. Vale and Caliban moved in to attack. Suddenly, a smoky power emerged from the monster's mouth, knocking both of them to the ground. Dante's titan was sent back.
"Dante!" Zhalia shouted. "Touchram!" she cast a spell at the opponent to draw his attention. For some reason, the Nullifier wasn't interested in her. The woman quickly used Hyperstride and landed between the creature and her partner. Unexpectedly, the giant turned to stone, then was showered with a hail of boulders.
Zhalia and Dante reached into their pouches, pulling out amulets.
"Clear the way, Metagolem!"
"Make them tremble, King Basilisk!"
They summoned their titans. Zhalia's titan gained golden armor on its chest, and its wings grew larger. Vale's golem got golden elements on its arms and legs.
"Both have become powerbonded. Coincidence?" Dante asked.
"I don't think so" the woman replied. "Powerbonded King Basilisk, activate petrification!" she commanded.
The Nullifiers near the fighting seekers turned to stone, and Metagolem shattered the statues, charging through them. The seekers' enthusiasm waned, and fear grew. They were increasingly exhausted. Most had reached their spell limit.
"Hurry, Sophie!" Lok urged.
"Just a moment!" she replied.
At a certain point in the fight, Lok was thrown under the multicolored sphere. Nullifier aimed to deliver a final blow. Unexpectedly, the giant was struck by the combined attacks of all four Legendary Titans.
"Finally" Den said. He helped his friend to get up.
"Hear my call, Legendary Titan of Immortality: Overlos!" Sophie commanded.
The crystal in the staff glowed an intense red. Moments later, a portal formed behind the group, and the king of titans left the portal. Overlos used his spear to strengthen the Foundation and Organization seekers for the battle.
Lok could use Everfight and no longer relied on Fears' support. Sophie and the boys charged forward, followed by the titans.
The seekers at the medics' base were surrounded by a yellow aura.
"What just happened?" Erik asked.
"The Legendary Titan of Immortality was summoned. I'm going to them" his niece replied.
"Wait. I'm going too" Sandra said.
"No, Mrs. Lambert. Please rest. I promise I won't let the Nullifiers hurt Cathy or Lok" Malia reassured her. The woman merely smiled and lay back down.
"Be careful" her uncle said in farewell.
Vivian, Mallory, and White were struggling in their battle against a huge monster. Mythras was sent back to the amulet after being torn apart by the giant's sharp claws.
"Newlife" the girl cast a spell on her ring and re-summoned the lion on four legs.
The titan roared at the Nullifier. The monster sent the titan back to the amulet again, dominating with his dark mist attack. Vivian was hit as she stood behind her summoning. The Lady of the Lake's guards charged in retaliation but were pushed back by a single hand movement from the monster. The girl looked helplessly at the Nullifier. Unexpectedly, Den and Lir appeared before her. The boy attacked with Augerfrost. The water bird struck with a narrow stream of water that pierced the Annulator.
"I thought the Lady of the Lake had more capable guards," Fears remarked. He helped her up. When they looked at each other, they blushed. Unexpectedly, someone was heading their way.
"Lady Vivian, are you alright? I saw everything from afar," Malia arrived.
The girl nodded, raising the corners of her mouth slightly.
"And you, Den?"
"Yeah, I'm okay" he replied curtly.
Lyssa noticed the unconscious Casterwill guards and headed towards them. The remaining two seekers moved on to the next Nullifier.
Montehue, Scarlet, and Tersly fought on the other side of the Spiral Mark. Firbolg and Gybolg maneuvered between the monster's legs. Fenris and Monti rushed to attack the creature's chest.
"Hyperstride" the man said.
"Doublespell: Raypulse" Tersly aimed at the opponent's eyes.
Montehue slashed the creature's abdomen with his axes. Scarlet's titans overturned the creature. The Nullifier responded by conjuring a tornado that engulfed and then finished off the titans. The whirlwind headed straight for Tersly. Unexpectedly, Cathy and Geomar came to his aid. The Legendary Titan of Earth bound the giant. Fenris furiously clawed at it. Both the Nullifier and the dangerous vortex vanished.
"Cathy!" exclaimed Scarlet.
"Tersly" he chuckled. "That a woman had to save you?" Montehue joked.
Lambert just smiled. "He might be hopeless in a fight, but he's definitely smarter than you, Mr. Number Two" she replied.
"That's true" the bespectacled man nervously laughed.
Montehue snorted.
Sophie and Lok decided to combine the power of their Titans. The Feathery Griffon and Inferno rose above the Spiral Mark. From their combined power, a fiery gust of wind emerged. Some Nullifiers burned, while others were ignited and thus slowed down. After a while, a monster emerged from the portal, towering in size. It was four times larger than the previous creatures.
"Focauld, is that the one you spoke of?" Sophie asked loudly.
The man nodded.
"It's enormous" Lok summed up.
"Overlos won't be able to handle him. There's no chance" Casterwill said.
The Nullifier roared incredibly loudly. All the seekers on the battlefield covered their ears.
"How on earth did he get here?" Vivian wondered, shocked.
"Surely grandpa told Sophie and Lok how to bring him here" Den replied.
"According to the records from the last battle against the Nullifiers, everything ended after defeating the King of Nullifiers. It must be him" Malia told Zhalia, Dante, and Harrison.
"But their fight lasted for hundreds of years. How did they manage to summon him so quickly?" Fears asked.
"We don't know. The most important thing is that we're one step closer to defeating them" Zhalia said.
Since Sophie summoned Overlos, the titan hadn't moved. As soon as he noticed the King of Nullifiers, it slowly headed towards him. The ongoing battles ceased. The Nullifiers rushed towards the Titan King. Unexpectedly, the crystals in all the amulets began to glow.
"Overlos is calling them to battle" Focauld announced.
The seekers summoned all their Titans. Quetzalcoatl returned to Earth on his own. During this time, it remained transformed into a blue star.
Titans and Legendary Titans immediately moved to protect their leader. Together, they defeated several Nullifiers, and a few ended up beneath the feet of the king. The battle still raged on. The Foundation, Organization, and Casterwills didn't know what to expect or what to do.
"We have to help them somehow" Sophie said.
"You see for yourself that there's no room for us there. We can only attack the Nullifiers from behind" Focauld replied.
"Casterwills..."
"Seekers..."
"...we'll regroup at the rear" Lok and Sophie said simultaneously.
