Chapter 1- Brother Dearest

Third Person

"Hey! Purple!" A low groan emitted upon hearing his new nickname, but it caught his attention nonetheless. "Come on over here!" The man grinned, gesturing him over to the table he was sitting at.

"Purple" paused before shrugging and decided to join him and his friend at the table. He plopped himself down with a sigh and shot the smallest of glares at who called to him. "You do know my name's not purple, right Gavin?"

Gavin rolled his eyes playfully and gave him a small punch in the shoulder. "I know, but Peter is such a common name, I figured you'd recognize I was talking to you better if I just called you purple. You know, like-"

"My hair, yes I know." Peter responded, self consciously running his hand through it, though it was short so there wasn't much there. "It was an accident."

Gavin chuckled loudly, his bright blue eyes shining as he ruffled his own silver hair. "Let me guess, you were drunk?" His friend, who Peter knew to be named Lars, laughed along as well. Lars had green eyes and brown hair, and was a lot quieter than his friend.

Peter huffed. The truth behind it was a lot more complicated than that, but he couldn't tell them about the trickster incident or they would think he was crazy, so he decided agreeing to it would be the best idea. He held his hands up in defense. "You got me. Worst way to wake up. Ever."

Gavin just kept laughing for a while before settling down. "Well, at least it's not permanent! That would suck."

Peter sucked in a breath. The trickster incident was last year, and his hair still remained as vibrantly purple since then, no matter what happened. "Yeah, it would." He muttered bitterly.

Gavin raised an eyebrow at his behavior but decided to let it go, taking a sip of a concoction he made himself. Lars waited a while before asking anything. "So Purple, tell us about yourself. What are you planning to go into here at St. Jamie's University?"

Though he rolled his eyes slightly at the nickname spreading, he let it slide. "Not sure yet. Law maybe? Police force? Heck, maybe I'll even go into business and make my own store or something." He answered, a sly smile forming on his face as he sipped iced water. "I just got here."

Lars smiled at that, nodding along. "Lots of potential then. You got a place to stay?"

Peter nodded firmly. "A friend of mine is out of town so I'm house sitting. Gives me time to find an apartment at this late of notice."

Lars kept nodding and took a sip of his soda, which allowed Gavin to start asking some questions. "Any family?"

"A Dad and a brother." Peter found himself smiling a bit by mentioning them. "Dad was really worried about letting me out on my own but Cody- my brother- finally got him to let me off the hook. My Dad means well but he's really stubborn about these things." He shrugged. "And though he won't admit it, Cody is too. He kinda raised me growing up so he's kinda protective." Peter smiled to himself, remembering the voicemail he received a couple days ago. He got quite a lot of teasing out of Cody from that alone.

Gavin nodded understandingly, but couldn't help but ask one thing. "No mother?"

Peter hesitated but shook his head in the end. "Dead."

Lars lightly patted him on the back while Gavin gave off a guilty look for asking. "Sorry to hear that." He huffed.

Peter quickly shook his head. "You didn't know. Besides, I was just a baby when it happened so I never really got to know her. I just hear about her from bedtime stories, nothing else."

Gavin sighed in relief. "Thanks... If you don't mind me asking, what happened to her?"

He almost didn't say it, but the purple haired man decided he could at least bend the truth a little. "House fire." He answered at last. Gavin and Lars both gave him the whole "Must've sucked" comment while Peter just kept nodding. It wasn't the whole truth, but answering "Demons" didn't seem acceptable so it would have to do.

Checking his phone for the time, he got up. "I'm heading off, I've got to wake up early tomorrow for choosing classes."

The other two nodded understandingly. "Alright, goodbye! Sorry for making things awkward!"

Peter snickered and shook his head. "It's fine, you're not the first to do it. See ya!" He waved before heading off.

Traffic was pretty tame so he managed to get back to the house within a couple minutes and wind down. He checked around the house, making sure everything was still just the way he left it before heading to the bedroom. Afterall, he was house-sitting and if anything did happen to the house, it would be his fault.

As he dug through his laundry basket in the bathroom, his eyes caught the mirror and sighed at the sight of his cursed purple hair. His hazel eyes glared at it before returning to the task at hand. "Stupid trickster..." He mumbled under his breath.

Truth was, a year before, Peter had normal dark brown hair, but then he went on a solo mission to take down a trickster, one of the most powerful beings, known for bending the rules of reality to their own pleasure and making the strangest things happen. They could make sweets appear out of thin air, make things in TV programs come to life, and, as it turned out, turn people's hair purple. All of that was supposed to fade when he killed it, but for some reason, the hair stayed. In the end, the trickster got the last laugh.

At least his facial hair didn't change, which reminded him he needed to shave.

He ended up throwing on a gray shirt and some sweatpants before he laid down and drifted off to sleep.

He expected a peaceful night, but when he woke up, it was to something thumping downstairs. He shot up and slipped out of the bed and down the stairs as silently as he could. Peter found himself hiding behind every wall and always preparing to fight anything that would come around the corner. He peeked around one leading to the kitchen and noticed a large figure moving around, almost searching for something. The moonlight coming from the windows showed their form, but not their face.

It was most likely a man or a pretty tall woman, but he doubt gender mattered. Right now, he just needed to get to him, or possibly her. For now, he'd just go with him.

He considered grabbing a knife to help him fight the intruder off, but decided against it, given it would take too much time and he needed to act while he still have the element of surprise on his hands.

While the stranger started to head for the hallway leading to the living room, Peter charged at him and tried to throw a punch, but the stranger heard his approach and caught his hand. With his other hand, he tried for another swing but the intruder dipped out of the way before it hit him.

The intruder elbowed his chest, making him stumble back into the kitchen. He went for a punch to the side of his face but Peter was able to duck out of the way and instead hit his stomach, getting a breathy cough from him. He recovered quickly and the two circled each other.

The intruder soon landed a hit right on his legs, and having just woken up, Peter found he wasn't at full power and they came out from under him. His back hit the wooden floor with a 'Thud' and seconds later, the stranger had him pinned.

It was only then that the moonlight coming from the windows shined in their face, allowing him to make it out. Peter blinked in surprise as a smirk formed on their face. "You ready to calm down?"

"Cody?" He blurted out in disbelief as his brother relaxed on his hold on him. It was true, Cody was right there in front of him. His shaggy black hair drooped in front of his face and his brown eyes were lit up with humor.

"The one and only." He chuckled. "I have to say, you're off your game, aren't you?" Peter's eyes glared at him as he laughed. "I mean, that was almost too e-WHOA!"

Without warning, Peter not only pushed Cody off of him, but reversed their roles, making Cody the one pinned down. He beamed, now proud of himself for catching him off guard. "You were saying?"

Cody grunted and rolled his eyes, but still smiled a little. "Fine, you win. Get off of me!"

Peter relaxed, getting up and offering a hand to his brother, which he took. "Okay, I have a lot of questions. First off, why did you break into my house at-" He paused, checking the kitchen clock. "2 AM in the morning? Also, how'd you even find this place? I don't remember telling you the address."

Cody just laughed, shaking his head. "I tracked your phone. Figured you be sleeping so I decided to make myself at home." Another laugh came from him. "I didn't think you'd go so far to attack me, but I stand corrected."

Peter huffed, but couldn't stop smiling. "Knock next time." He retorted, giving his brother a light punch in the shoulder before walking towards the kitchen. "Drink?" He offered, getting a grin from Cody who soon followed behind. Peter opened up the fridge and pulled out a pair of soda cans before sliding one over. Cody caught it, but gave a bored look when he noticed what it was. "What? It's 2 AM, Cody. I'm not giving you alcohol at this time at night."

"Why not?" He grumbled, popping it open. "It's 8 PM somewhere in the world, and I am an adult. Do I need to show you my ID?"

His brother only laughed. "Shut up and drink." Cody sighed before obeying. They both were quiet for a while before Peter asked anything. "So, why are you here? Breaking into the house doesn't exactly scream "I'm just visiting" so what's up?" He asked, sipping his drink.

Cody's eyes darkened and avoided his gaze for a couple seconds. "Dad's gone missing. Hasn't been back in a while."

"I'm sure he's fine." Peter pointed out. "It's not the first time he's gone off to do his own thing and it certainly won't be the last." But Cody just kept insisting, narrowing his eyes.

"I last saw him five days ago when he went off to go hunt something. He was supposed to be back the next morning."

Peter couldn't deny that was very concerning. "You think he's dead?"

"Or caught up in something." Cody shrugged, sighing. "You know how he can get when it comes to hunting. Point is, I tracked his phone and... Well, I noticed as I was driving there that it hadn't moved for hours, so I figured I'd bring backup." His brown eyes brightened back up and locked eyes with him. "So, I got the best hunter I know."

Peter stared at him. "You want me to come with you? I kinda got college going on."

Cody frowned. "Just a small trip, it'll be in and out, promise! Come on, you haven't even signed up for classes yet!" He paused, doubting himself. "Wait, have you?"

Peter quickly shook his head. "No, not yet but I was hoping I would today."

"Then do it another day and come with me! We've haven't hunted together in ages, it'll be fun!" Cody grinned and put on his best pleading eyes. "Please?"

Peter held his breath, but in the end, let it go and went with it. "Fine, fine. Just one, alright?"

Cody nodded and got up. "I've got everything I need in the car, you just get what you have and I meet you out there." Peter gave a thumbs up, allowing Cody to take off.

Peter put on a flannel shirt and some jeans on, packed some extra clothes then started to grab some of the weapons he had with him. It wasn't much, just a gun and some silver knives, but it was enough for a lot of supernatural creatures. He put everything in a bag, including his wallet, phone and other essentials before heading out to the car.

Cody had an black, old fashioned car waiting in the driveway. Peter got in the front seat and threw his stuff in the back. Cody glanced at him as he started up the car. "You ready for some hunting, KrakenKid?" He smirked, eyes sliding sideways to see his brother's reaction.

Peter groaned and shot him a look. "Really? We're doing childhood nicknames now? You started calling me that when I was ten! Ten!"

Cody snickered. "Hey, I never stopped calling you it, what makes you think I'm going to stop now?"

"KrakenKid" grumbled before a sly smirk grew on his face. Cody noticed and knitted his eyebrows together. "Well," He began, facing Cody and still smiling as large as before. "If we're doing childhood nicknames, two can play at that came, PENGUIN!"

Cody bristled. "That was a traumatic experience for me and you went and made a nickname out of it! I almost died of hypothermia and Dad didn't let me do solo missions for months!"

"Well so was mine! I was ten, looking for you and Dad and suddenly you two are screaming and there's a giant squid thing killing you both!" He argued back.

Both began to pout before Peter got curious. "...Where are we going anyways?"

Cody sighed, only now beginning to back out of the driveway and drive away. "Some place in Nevada. It's only a couple hours away and we've got a head start." He answered.

"Great." Peter answered. "Quick and easy. In and out."

Cody kept his eyes on the road as the sun began to rise. The endless bare trees passed by and staring at the yellow lines and black road was starting to make him dizzy. He sighed, it had been too long since he went cross country for a case, he certainly needed to get back in the game.

Since the road was empty for miles to come, he allowed his eyes to wander from it to his brother next to him. Peter currently had his head rested against the window and his body leaning against the door, taking in small breaths as he slept. Cody knew that Peter didn't even realize when he fell asleep, because one moment he was talking, and the next, out like a light. Waking up early did that to you.

Cody might have put hunting as one of his top priorities, but above it all was protecting his brother. That's what Dad always told him when he went out while he was young. "Don't answer the door unless you hear my special knock, don't wander off, and above all else, look out for Peter."

Sure, that was back when his brother was just a child who needed someone protecting him, but even now, even when he was fully capable of defending himself, Cody never quit his job.

His finally forced his eyes back on the road before noticing the path shown on his phone. They were closing in on the spot, no doubt about it. He paused before nudging his brother, causing him to shake awake. "Hey! Kraken, we're almost there."

The purple haired one groaned and rubbed his eyes, trying to focus. "Right... Gotta find Dad..." He mumbled to himself as he blinked rapidly. "...Where is he?"

Cody glanced at the phone again. "I don't know but it looks like some sort of structure in the middle of nowhere."

Peter chuckled. "That's reassuring. You sure he's even there?"

Cody hesitated, not wanting to get either of their hopes up, but not wanting to abandon them either. "His phone is there, so probably." He answered. The rest of the drive was in silence.

Cody pulled up to a rundown warehouse, which outside of a couple holes in the walls and roof plus broken windows, looked to be in pretty good shape. For being abandoned. He took one look at the place and got chills. "Come on." He told his brother as he stepped out of the car and drew his pistol he kept on him. Peter nodded and did the same, holding up his own m9, a small gun.

They both carefully entered the place, checking around and half expecting for something to jump out at them, but nothing did. Inside, the warehouse was wide and mostly empty, having a couple tall, metal shelves around and tables here and there, but nothing more. The brothers shared a look before splitting off to cover more ground.

Peter began to search through the shelves and tables, but it mostly came up empty until a book and phone lying on top of each other on a table caught his eyes. "Penguin!" He called out, getting his brother to come to his aid before eyeing what he found.

The phone was standard, looking just like theirs but it was the book that interested them. It was leatherbound and pretty big, baring many pages, some sticking out and if it weren't held together by a strap keeping it shut, it seemed like its contents would spill out. Cody didn't hesitate like his brother to stroll right up to it and began to flip through the book, slipping the phone into his pocket.

Cody's eyes widened when he recognized what it was. "This is Dad's hunting journal. Everything he knows is within these pages." He said in disbelief.

Peter finally snapped out of his shock and joined him by his side, peeking over his shoulder. He searched it for a moment before taking it out of his hands to look for himself. He flipped through it until he reached the first page, and there, they saw it.

An folded up piece of paper, taped into it and reading the words 'To my sons' on the front of it. "Holy smokes..." He mumbled before carefully ripping it out and unfolding so he could read it.

Dear Cody and Peter,

I have unfinished business to attend to. I thought I could put it off for your sakes, but the thirst for revenge is too strong. A week ago, I got a call about some information that couple help lead to your mother's killer. It wasn't much, and I thought I could ignore it and just move on with my life, but I can't. I have to do this, and I have to do it alone.

I never meant for either of you to get into hunting, I really didn't, but it happened and I can never take that back. You both have each other, and with your skills combined, you can save a lot of people from the supernatural of this world.

Don't try looking for me. I have a new phone, one that you won't be able to track, and I don't intend on leaving a trail. Like I said, this is for me to do alone.

Stay safe and try to stay out of trouble. Don't draw any more attention to yourself than you have to.

I love you both so much.

~P. Maverick

They both read it over a million times, Cody was shocked while Peter felt a little betrayed. Why didn't he say goodbye in person?

"Well this is just great." Peter groaned, rubbing his temple. "We came all this way and no Dad..."

Cody nodded along and huffed, only now ripping his gaze away from the note. He folded it up and put it in his pocket before pausing. "There's a town nearby." He said, catching Peter's attention. "And I don't know about you, but I'm hungry. Wanna stop by?"

Peter wasn't so sure, but then again, he was hungry too and it still would be relatively quick. He nodded along and started to head for the car. "Sure. It'll still be a quick trip either way."

He couldn't be more wrong.

********************************************************

So here's the first chapter! Wooooo!

I decided to incorporate a mix of what they're like in real life, and in Atlantis. For example, giving KrakenKid/Peter purple hair like how his kraken form is, and giving Cody black hair like how his penguin form is. Also, the nicknames thing as well!

I totally didn't base Gavin and Lars on Gnash and Larsa, nooooo, of course not... Okay maybe I did.

Anyways, there wasn't a huge amount of action of them hunting yet, but I'm going to do that in the next chapter! I have big plans for this book.

Moving on, I hope you liked the first chapter! Be sure to comment and tell me what you thought, and goodbye!
