Chapter 6
Grace's PoV
My eyes met Dean's as they drove past me, on their way to the park ahead of me, and I couldn't help but feel mad. Not only at him but Sam too. I'd asked for their help and they'd accepted, yet since they've been here all I've received are bitter words and passive aggressive body language. Sam was trying to help and steer the situation towards something positive but I knew it wasn't going to work - and I think he secretly knew that too. Whatever was going on with Dean and their mission back home, it was occupying his mind. He looked back at me with a slight irritation and I could already sense the tenseness in the car. Thank God i was going in my own vehicle and staying away from that.
I packed everything I needed in the bag and threw it in the passenger seat, jumping into my car and heading to the park behind Sam and Dean. My gut was telling me that, because they thought I was an amateur, they were probably going to head into the house before I got there and part of me was glad. If that was the case, they'd probably come across Reg and his kids before I did, saving me the agony of killing someone I knew. I always went through with the kills but it weighed on me for a while afterwards - seeing them as the person I saw before, the one I'd see in the market or laughing with friends over coffee, feeling like I killed that and not the monster that had overtaken their meatsuit.
Remembering Daniel, I slowed the car and pulled over for a second, rubbing my hands over my face as soon as the car had come to a stop. That was one I never got over. It had been so easy before that; never having to kill a monster that looked like someone I knew, never thinking for a second how the family of the victim would feel when I'd got rid of the monster. It really was a black and white world in my mind. That was until Daniel came along. A guy who I'd known since school, we grew up together with another two people. We did everything together, but Dan and I just clicked and were the closest we thought it was possible for two friends to be. We knew everything about each other and spent so much time together it was hard for me to accept it when the signs had told me he'd been possessed by a demon. The demon had chosen him on purpose, knowing he knew everything about me and that it would be hard for me to hurt someone I held so dearly. The demon wanted information from me, but he wanted to do it the bloody way. He possessed Daniel, got him to hurt me for information. I didn't say a word, other than when I was trying to exorcise him but it didn't work. In the end, we were fighting and it was a split second decision - him or me. I shoved my blade into him and the demon sparked out, killing both him and my best friend. That was tough enough, but watching his family break down and shrink into themselves just added to the hurt. I never had the heart to tell them anything about what had happened, they were told by the police that he was stabbed during a home invasion but never mentioned whose house so I kept quiet. His image flashed into my mind for a second; his messy curls, his straight, white teeth framed by his plump lips, stubble shadowing the lower half of his face. My friend.
I sighed as I pushed the image away, readying myself for the case I was currently on once again. I started the car up again and continued my journey to the park hoping I wasn't too late for the action.
I threw the ash over myself, covering my scent from the vampires as I pulled my machete and belt of dead mans blood out of my bag, loading up my gun and slotting them all into place before shutting the car up and sneaking towards the house. Just as I had suspected, the party was already in full swing and I could already hear the fights ensuing inside the house. Without any further hesitation, I snuck round the back and into the house. The crashes and bangs were echoing around the house from the living room, so I followed the noise to find Sam and Dean. I took out a couple of injured stragglers that had clearly lost their fight before retreating, arriving in the living room quickly. Four vampires were battling the brothers, who even I was impressed with. They really could hold their own in a fight, even when they were outnumbered. I took the opportunity of the distraction to behead another vampire as it tried to recover from being beaten. Another vampire hissed at me as it ran, knocking me to the floor with my machete flying out of my hand. The vampire overpowered me instantly but I moved away from the attack just enough to grab one of my needles of blood which I stabbed into him. The vampire retreated from me as he held the injection site, crying out for a second. I jumped up, grabbing my machete before charging at him, swinging quickly to decapitate him. Sam and Dean quickly finished the other two in the room and for a second, we all stood catching our breath. The guys began to pack up their stuff as I looked over all the vampires, taking in just who we had killed tonight - but something didn't add up. The vamp I'd followed back wasn't here. Some were missing.
"Let's get the people out of here." Dean ordered, heading towards the basement with Sam in tow.
"That's not all of them." I stated as I checked around, on high alert as I readied my machete. "Two are missing." I shouted out to them but Dean turned and huffed.
"We've checked the whole place. Let's just free the people who are stuck here and get out. You might have been wrong. We've killed everyone here ." He snapped at me, pulling the door open to the basement and heading down there with Sam. Seconds later, all the people I'd seen in the missing persons photos were filing out of the basement and out of the front door, overjoyed that they'd been saved. "Thanks for the fun." Dean added to me as he headed towards the front door himself, pulling it open to reveal another two vampires.
"Dean!" Sam cries out as one punched him into the wall.
"Son of a bitch."
