Chapter 24
Graces PoV
Casually, I got up and headed over to the pregnant woman, who instinctively moved away from me as I sat at her table with her.
"Hey, no I know how this looks..." I laughed nervously. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay? A pregnant woman out by herself at this time is enough to rouse my suspicion." I shrugged, trying to act like I hadn't just seen two demons talking in the kitchen. All i needed to do was stall until Sam got here, then I had a better chance of protecting this woman. She relaxed in her chair and sighed.
"Thank you but I'm fine. I just wanted some pancakes." She tried to smile but it didn't reach her eyes. She was scared.
"And you didn't have anyone to accompany you?" I asked carefully but she shook her head.
"They wouldn't have let me come out and I really needed the air, and the space." Her fork continued to push a piece of pancake around the plate and as I looked down, I noted she hadn't eaten any of it.
"Blueberry May have been a better flavour." I said with a hint of humour as she saw me looking at her food. She let out a smile once more.
"I don't know, I just lost my appetite which is annoying." My attention was caught by the waitress who cleared her throat as she held my plate of pancakes.
"Where would you like them ma'am?" She said, that same smile back on her face as it was in the kitchen.
"Over here would be fine." I smiled, noticing the pregnant woman shift uncomfortably as I invited myself to eat with her. As she walked over, I grabbed my flask from my pocket and set it down on the table. "What's your name?" I whispered as I turned back to the pregnant lady. She seemed reserved, so I introduced myself. "I'm Grace."
"Kelly." She said quietly.
"Kelly, I need you to pack up your stuff and get ready to run. Do not touch the pancakes." I said as I undid the lid of my flask and took a sip out of it, keeping the water in my mouth. Kelly glared at me with worry as the waitress put the plate down in front of me and poured me a new coffee. I turned to her and spat the holy water out, her skin sizzling as she stepped back from us. Kelly screamed as she shoved the plate away from her. I stood up, grabbing Kelly by the wrist and yanking her behind me.
"What's going on? Please don't hurt me!" She cried out as she struggled from my grip.
"Kelly, I'm the good guy. Those people are demons, they laced your food with sedatives and want to kill me for saving you so let's go." I snapped as I threw more holy water at the waitress, slowly edging us around the booths and towards the front door. The waitress flicked her hand and sent me flying through the front door of the diner, skidding to a halt in the parking lot. Kelly screamed as she ran out of the diner towards me just as the purr of the impala sounded behind me. Sam jumped out and ran towards me, lifting me to my feet.
"Grace? You okay?" He asked worriedly.
"Sam, Kelly, Kelly, Sam." I did introductions. "And two demons in the diner." I said as I sucked in a sharp breath, looking at the road burn that coated my arms. "Dammit." Sam pulled his blade from his belt and ran inside without a second thought. These demons weren't going to give up easily and he needed as much help as he could get. "Kelly, stay in the car - don't come out no matter what you hear or see. Okay? I'll protect you and the baby." She nodded as she cradled her bump, slowly lowering herself into the impala and shutting the door behind her. "Press the horn if anything happens." I said as I ran back in, knife ready to fight the demons with Sam. He was fighting the chef as I entered, the waitress just getting back to her feet. Sam jabbed his knife into the chef, the demon sparking as it died. He quickly spun round and jammed his knife into the waitress, leaving them both on the floor as he wiped his blade on his sleeve.
"You didn't need to save me. I'm a good fighter." He said as he smirked at me, a smile growing on my face in an instant.
"Says the guy who couldn't kill the shifter." I retaliated, spinning my blade in my hand. He laughed as he shook his head. "Come on, Kelly seems to trust me so let's get her out of here before anyone else comes." We both sprinted out and jumped into the impala, driving off before anyone had a chance to work out what had happened.
"Thank you, Grace." Kelly suddenly said, breaking the silence we were in through the drive. I spun round and looked over at her with a small smile.
"It's no problem. Sorry that you had to deal with that. I think lucifer is trying to find you. He's using is demons to do the job." I explained, placing a hand on her knee.
"Look, Kelly, I know this all seems crazy but Cass knows this baby is good. We need to protect you both. Everyone has a motive for themselves other than us, we just want what is best for the world and Cass says that is this baby." Sam explained as he sped back to the hotel. Kelly looked as if she was debating everything in her mind, stress creasing her otherwise flawless features.
"It's fine to take your time with this, Kelly. I can't imagine what it must feel like to be in this position." I said softly, hoping this was the womanly touch the men would never have thought of.
"It's so hard. It's like everyone wants to look out for me but not because they care. I just want my baby to be safe." She said, tears filling her eyes as she sniffled.
"I understand, Kelly. Trust me, I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe if you want us to help you." She rubbed her eyes before looking up and me and smiling.
"I do."
