Chapter 4
(Jenny's P.O.V.)
After I finished eating I paid him and hopped in the car. The engine stalled and I slammed my fist on the wheel. As if like magic if turned over and started. Backing up I drove to the intersection and waited for the light. What did that pie guy know and how much would he be willing to share under some......persuasion. The light switched colors and I started to drive. A rumbling noise caught my attention and I looked out my window just as a car barreled into me.
Glass shattered and shards flew all over the place. I felt the seatbelt dig into my should and I could see I person or two staring as the car spun in a circle. The tail of the other car smacked into the front of the car and my head slammed against the doors window. All went black.
(Chris's P.O.V.)
I heard sirens and shouts in the street as I walked outside. Jen had been gone for a while and I decided to explore. Knowing her she would have taken the car. After she had gotten her license a year ago she was always eager to drive. An ambulance sped on by and I was starting to get worried. Not only was Jen not here, but the car wasn't either. A sudden streak of terror raced through me and I ran into town. I had been the top runner in high school and with the hunting I was still in shape. I was overcoming a hill when I saw people and cars surrounding an intersection. There in the center was a smashed red Cadillac and across from it....a totaled black 1967 Mustang. Fear for my sister shot up and I barreled past people and to the scene of the accident, although every fiber in my being told me that this was no accident.
"What the hell happened!?" I screeched grabbing the shirt of an officer. He looked just as frightened as I felt.
"Well t-there was an accident. Someone ran a red light and smashed into the black car. Both drivers were hurt pretty bad." My shoulders slumped and I punched him in the face. The officer stumbled back and held his jaw. A warm hand settled on my shoulder and I looked up to see Jen standing there. She had a bandage around her head and several cuts covered her arms and face.
"What the bloody hell did you think you were doing!? You could have died!"
"I drove into town, I ate some pie, and I was driving home when this guy smashed into me." Jen had a cold and calculating look and I stopped talking.
"You should have woken me up."
"Then you would either be hurt or dead." Her words hurt and made me furious.
"Like hell!" I shoved her and stormed over to my car. It was ruined. My baby. My precious darling baby. Totaled because of an asshole of a driver! I could feel my blood boil. Not only did we not have a car, but now we were trapped in this dreary sea-side town. I was just starting to calm down when I heard.
"You know apple pie with whip cream is a great remedy for a troubled person." I glanced up to see a guy with shaggy blonde hair and hideous dull grey eyes. I frowned and snatched the pie.
"Pumpkin in obviously a much better choice, by the way, I'm not paying." The guy laughed but suddenly stopped. He was staring at something behind me and I turned to find Jen sitting on a bench with her head in her hands. I felt bad for yelling at her. It wasn't her fault.
"Maybe she would like some pie?" I shook my head.
"No, she hates pie. It reminds her of our parents. They passed away." The guy looked at me strangely. "What?"
"She had a slice of cherry pie this morning." I frowned. Interesting.
(Jenny's P.O.V.)
My head was aching and I could feel every little sting of my cuts. Chris was talking to the pie guy and I could feel my stomach turn at the thought of pie. I couldn't believe that someone had merely accidently crashed into me. Not without reason. My guess, someone tried to kill me or hospitalize me.
"Hey, sorry for yelling at you." Chris was standing behind me with a sad look upon her face.
"Mm." I grunted not wanting to answer her. She sighed and sat down.
"Why did you eat the pie? I thought you hated pie?" I nodded. The thought of pie made me sick and I closed my eyes.
"I was doing it to blend, it would've looked weird if I came in asking questions." She nodded.
"Let's just leave. Pack up, visit Scotland or something." I looked up at the sky.
"We can't, no car." Chris casted her eyes down.
"Actually I found someone willing to sell a bark blue 1979 Triumph TR7. It's in really good condition and the lady is willing to sell it for five hundred pounds." That was quite a bit of money. Roughly three hundred and fifty in American money.
"Shooting range?"
"You bet. Hey where are our guns and other weapons? We always keep them in a secret compartment in the trunk." I laughed and pointed to a ordinary looking dumpster. Chris understood, the guns were in out getaway bag and I had stashed them before the cops showed up. We hurried over to city hall and were digging around in the current event section when a meaty had settled on my shoulder. I jerked away and looked up to see and old, grumpy, farmer-like man.
"Stop snooping in our lives, what we do is none of you're damn business." I nodded
"Thanks, but I like to snoop." I glared at him and gave him a snarky smile. Growling the man stormed off and I turned to Chris with a look of wonder on my face. Ten minutes passed before my eyes scanned across and article that caught my attention. "Chris, this is it, read!" Chris's eyes narrowed to look at the article. "That's when I say my friend Molly grab Brianna and suddenly disappear. Acording to what I've found, Molly's been dead for two years, and Brianna was the third child to go missing." Chris nodded. I smacked my head. "Of course!" Booting my laptop up I quickly searched my history.
"Acheri, a creature who can turn invisible, takes on the forms of other children, and has superhuman strength."
"That would explain the kidnappings." Chris muttered. I quickly scrawled everything they had on Acheri's in my journal, but my mind kept wandering to the pie guy, the two arguing men, and the farmer just now. They were all hiding something, but what? Chris and I had traveled to the town store and bought a whole bunch of salt. Then we headed to the first victims house.
(Chris's P.O.V.)
The house was quiet and there didn't seem to be anyone there. We walked into the house searching for any clues.
"God, this house freaks me out." Jen muttered. I was with her on that. The house was dark and old with what looked like dried blood on the walls.
"Maybe someone sprayed all of this on." There were signs that littered the wall, all most as if someone had tagged the whole house. Holes and trashed covered the room we were in. Jen pulled out an air rifle that she had strapped to her back. I grabbed my Remington 700 rifle and carefully scanned the house. Jen took a step towards the kitchen when suddenly she screamed. A hand latched onto me and I jerked away.
Beside me was a little girl with messy blonde hair. The Acheri. A shot rang out and the little girl contorted.
"Iron bullets." I smiled. Then I snatched up my salt and ran around the creature leaving it trapped in a circle of salt.
"Let's light this bitch." While reaching for my lighter I heard Jen scream. Turning I found another Acheri latched onto Jen. It's claw like fingers were digging into her arm and I could see blood start to dribble out. Taking aim I pulled the trigger. My bullets weren't iron, but they sure as hell hurt anyway. The creature was flung off Jen and I saw her face contort in anger. Without mercy Jen made a salt circle and then dumped salt on the Acheri. It shrieked and made furious gagging noises. At the same time we lit the two Acheris on fire.
"Damn, it got me." Jen grabbed the hem of her shirt and ripped a piece off, dabbing her neck I could see her wince. Upon seeing my expression she smiled.
"I thought we were going to buy a car." I grinned.
"We are, I just wanted to tell you that I get to drive first." She laughed and we started to go out the door.
"You bitches! What did you do!?" We both ducked in time as an ax sored over our heads. There standing in the front of the house was the pie boy and the meaty farmer. "Those were our goddesses! You just couldn't stay out of it could you!? I tried, but still you interfered!" Then it clicked. Pie boy tried to kill Jen.
"So you fuckers tried to kill her!?" The meaty farmer grinned.
"You bet, and it was so fun to see her face. Pure terror." I snapped. In one motion I kicked out my legs and knocked pie boy to the ground. Catching on Jen Slammed her fist into the farmer's face. We were women, but we had taken hunting, self-defense, and police courses. It took a bit of a pounding, but we finally knocked them unconscious.
. . .
"Well there was our daily dose of horror and fright." I laughed as I drove out of Haysham.
"Yea, and by the way, I am never coming to this town, ever again." Jen replied. We had turned in the two guys for attempted murder, got a new car, and packed up. We were finally leaving.
"Where to now?" I asked, the wind blowing my hair around. Jen looked up from her laptop screen. Her eyes glittered with adventure.
"How do you feel about America?"
