Chapter Twenty One - Moves and Countermoves
Beeping is the first thing I remember when I woke up. Then dim lights of a hospital, wonderful I was in a hospital...again. Then I remember why I was in a hospital, the explosion, the fire. The death of my Mother and surrogate sister. I tried to sit up.
"Hey, I need you to lay back. You're OK. Everything is going to be Ok." I fell back asleep. When I awoke again. Mrs Everdeen was attending my wounds. Why was she working? I thought she would be mourning, as I was for Primrose. For my own mother.
---
"Fight was over after the Capitol dropped those bombs to defend the palace. The rebels walked right in." Haymitch was telling me. I winced looking at Mrs Everdeen.
"Don't Lily. The ointment's working." she told me
"Everybody felt it. Peacekeepers, palace guards. They had kids in there too. It was..." he broke sentence effected by what happened "It was over after that."
"Where's Rory? Was he...Did he..."
"Lily." I snapped my head and I saw Rory, Vik and Posy. They all had puffy eyes from crying. I broke down seeing them as they ran over. I hugged them and cried at the same time.
"Your safe, I thought... I saw Mom and Rosie.. And then. Oh god I thought I lost you." I sobbed
"I'm OK." Rory replied "We're okay." I looked at Mrs Everdeen
"Mrs Everdeen. I'm so sorry." She shook her head and took my arm finishing her work. Haymitch left with Mrs Everdeen.
"Look at you. I have never been more grateful to see that moppy hair." Rory strangled a laugh
"When you were brought in... do you like hospitals or something?" Vick asked
"No, of course not." I played with Posy's fingers.
"Where's Gale?" I question
"He feels guilty. He said he couldn't see you." Vick informed me. I wondered why when it hit me. The formation on what was carried out. It was what Gale was talking about on the hovercraft to District 2. Was it his bombs that killed Mom and Rosie. Did he make us orphans? They left and Peeta came in.
"Lily!" He ran over to my side and kissed me. "Don't ever worry me like that again."
"Can't promise anything. You know me, danger loves me." I try and joke. I saw him grip his hand and a look came over his eye he was fighting, fighting his episode. Fighting the Snow even now. I waited patiently till he calmed down.
"I'm sorry about your Mom. And about Rosie." he apologised
"Have you seen Katniss?"
"She won't come out of her room. She just cries." I felt sympathy wash over me. Once I was out of this bed I would go and see her. After the ointment worked I went to do exactly that. I opened her door and she looked up.
"Lily" I ran to hug her as she cried some more.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." I muttered stroking her head
"She's gone. She's really gone." We sat there for a while until she looked up.
"You lost your Mom." I nodded
"I saw her. I saw her and Rosie right before... I tried to get them but it happened so fast." i tried to explain, what a part of me was so guilty for, not reaching them faster for pulling them away even though I might have been caught in the blast as well.
"I don't blame you. I could never blame you."
"Kat, I need to tell you something." I breathe, this was probably the worst thing that I would do. But i needed to tell her, she needed to know, heaven forbid she found out ever or from anyone else other than me.
"What."
"I can't be sure but if I don't tell you, I will regret it forever. And I think you should know. But if you don't want to know I won't burden you"
"Lily, tell me."
"The formation of what happened. It looked familiar. Explosion caused to scare, medics running in healing the injured luring others into a false sense of security. I didn't work it out until Rory told me something."
"Lily!" She snapped
"Gale. On the hovercraft to district 2. I overheard him going over a similar strategy with Beetee. I can't be sure. I may never be sure. But there is a high possibility that it was his plan, I don't know if it was always meant to happen that way. Or if Coin ordered it. But the similarities are scary bold." She pulled away
"Gale's bomb."
"I don't know. I'm just saying it looked like that. I don't want to think it was his bombs that killed our Mom and Rosie. But its bothering me. I just...I felt you should know."
"I needed to know. Thank you for telling me."
"Kat, this could all be in my head. I could be just looking for someone other than myself to blame. I..."
"Lils. Stop." I shut up. There was a knock at the door, Effie opened it.
"Lily, It's time to go." Ah, I was being take to the palace. I nodded and looked at Katniss.
"Do you want to stay with your Mom?" I wondered. It was rare that she did, but I had to ask.
"Yeah, I will come see you later." I nodded and kissed her head before leaving.
Effie and I walked up to the Presidential palace. I was cold and snow had begin to set onto the ground.
"I remember the first time I brought you here." She sighed
"End of the victory tour, very Capitalised. It seems so... silent." She led me inside and through the halls, to my room where I would be staying for now.
"And here we are." She breathed and I looked at the very lavish room with all the trimmings
"I brought over your things." She told me pointing to the table. Dad's portrait. Peeta and I, Our pendant token, my pearl and my wedding rings. I touched them before picking them up and sliding them onto my finger.
"Well I'll leave you to get settled" She walked out heels clacking against the wood. I don't think I would get settled in the home that housed the man who ruined my life. I decided to go for a walk. I needed to think clearly. I made my way down the steps into one of the many halls in this wing. There were guard on every entrance.
Walking past them I entered the study. His study, I now recognised from his last address. Everything was left untouched. From there I went into a dining room with a grand mahogany circular table. Out the corner of my I saw something that made me turn. It was a green house. I felt drawn to it, as if I had to go there to put my mind at ease. I stepped out it the crisp, cold air and made my way down. This two was guarded and as I came closer I was stopped.
"Sorry, Ma'am. I can't let you pass." he told me
"Let her in." I turned and was greeted with Paylor "On my authority. She has the right to anything behind that door." I gave her a nod to which she returned. They let me through the double doors.
The smell of potent roses fills my nostrils. Every where they was Snows signature growing without a care in the world. In the middle was a fountain. I walked closer taking everything in. The nice and the worst. I bent down slightly and picked a rose.
"That's a nice one." I turned sharply to the voice. Snow came out with a smile on his face. "The colours are lovely of course. But nothing says perfection like white. I was hoping you would find your way here." I began to walk closer to the man who turned everything he touched into blackness.
"There are so many things we should discuss." I looked at the guards who were watching us closely. Whether they would be nervous to how I would react or out of curiousness.
"But I have a feeling your visit will be brief , so first things first." he started cough and heaved up blood into a handkerchief "I wanted to tell you. I am very sorry about your mother and the young Miss Everdeen. So wasteful, so unnecessary." I fist my hand into a ball to control my anger. How dare he mention them.
"Anyone could see the game was over by that point. In fact I was just about to issue an official surrender when they released those parachutes."
"You released those parachutes." A part of me even though, it all seemed similar wanted it to be him that cause the hurt and suffering. I just wanted to ignore it.
"You really think I gave the order?" he asked mockingly "We both know I'm not above killing children. But I'm not wasteful. I take life for specific reasons. And there was no reason for me to destroy a pen full of Capitol children. None at all." He coughed again and groaned before smiling at me again
"I must concede, it was a masterful move on Coin's part. The idea that I was bombing our own helpless children to hold back the rebels. It turned the last of my guards against me. There was no resistance left inside the Capitol or the mansion. Did you know it aired live?" he questioned I held my stomach in disgust.
"Theres a particular savvy in that, isn't there? I'm sure she wasn't gunning for your mother or little Primrose, but these things happen in war. My failure was in being so slow to grasp Coin's plan. She let the Capitol and the districts destroy one another. Then she stepped in to take power with 13's arsenal. Oh, make no mistake, she intends to take my place now. But I've been watching you. And you've been watching me. I'm afraid we've both been played for fools."
"I don't believe you." I say.
"Oh my dear Miss Hawthorne. I thought we'd agreed never to lie to eachother." I stood straighter and stiffer.
"We did, which is why you know, you're waiting for my promise from the arena, to be fulfilled." my head went higher in strength and defiance
"To make me pay for harming Mr Mellark."
"You wished me not to cause anymore riots and discontentment. Yet it was you who took him from me."
"Are you sure about that?"
"Yes. We both know I left with the intention of returning for Peeta as soon as possible. You caused this, tell me. Do you really thought I would have agreed if I had him with me?" He looked at me.
"We will never know. Will we." I slowly turned taking the rose with me.
