4 : at the table
••••••••••

Venus woke up the next day to an empty bed unfortunately. She yawned, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes as she sat up straight. Looking around the room she saw that April was no where near. After she had stretched she swung her legs over the bed and stood up to her feet.  She went in April's bathroom, getting her toothbrush that she kept here and brushed her pearly whites. Venus washed her face and fixed her ponytail again before she made her way downstairs.

She heard the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen, and she hesitantly walked in there to see April's family which made her feel at peace. But what she didn't expect is to see Kellen sitting at her spot at the table.

"Mornin' Venus," Mr. Dean greeted with a warm smile on his face. He was a tall man that stood around 6'1 with a nice built frame, low shaved hair, beautiful brown skin, and a great smile. Mr. Dean was a funny man who got along with a lot of people due to his charm and kind ways. April's father was like a father to Venus when her father never seemed to be around. He was a great guy who treated Venus like she was his own daughter, and she felt his love everytime he was around.

"Morning Mrs. Dean and Dr. Dean," Venus greeted with a soft smile after walking further into the kitchen, pretending not to notice Kellen but the presence of him made her skin crawl.

"Hi Veve!" Sheema Dean, which was the babygirl of the house was like Venus's little sister that she has never had before. She was a short pretty brown skinned girl who had gorgeous hair and a bubbly personality like her dad. Literally, she was a miniature version of April when she was a kid.

"Hi Sheema, how are you my little bumblebee?" Venus greeted with a big smile as she bent forward to the child's level.

"I'm Good. I was a big bright star at my play last night," Sheema says proudly.

"Aww, I bet you did so amazing," Venus coos before she stood up straight. "You're a star wherever you go."

"Thanks," Sheema gushes.

"Venus, do you know Kellen?" Mr. Dean had asked pouring himself some orange juice. "He goes to your school."

Venus had to resist the urge of rolling her eyes. Instead she smiled and nodded her head, "Yeah, I know him," she then took a seat at the table across from him.

"Dad," April sung catching her father's attention, soon giving him a certain look. "We're just going to finish on our project and he'll be on his way out..like forever."

"You can't just say that April," Mrs. Dean spoke with her soothing voice that always managed to put everybody underneath her trance. Unlike her husband, she was a bit short compared to him but that didn't mean that people could pushed over her. She was a strong black woman with long black dreads that reached to her waist, a beautiful smile, and a curvy body. Mrs. Dean was an older version of her daughter, and you would only notice that if you have been around the both of them for a very long time. They were reserve but very intelligent, could be very sarcastic, they're open minded, and if you set them off they would pop on your ass like a firecracker. But it was a rare thing to see Mrs. Dean upset because she was such a chill mom who loved Venus like she was her own daughter.

"Your mother's right April. Be nice, he's a family friend," Mr. Dean asserted in which made April want to smack her forehead.

Venus turned to April, flickering her eyes at her, "A family friend?" She had restated, but it was meant to target April who shyly looked away from her. Venus had no clue that their families were close and this worried her even more.

"Yes, since they were diapers," Mrs. Dean elaborates.

"And I'm a bit hurt that you're just gonna kick me to the curb," Kellen sniffs pretending like he was fake crying.

"It's the truth," April then shrugs.

"April," Mrs. Dean called her child's name, giving her a look that spoke 'be nice'.

"Okay sorry, my fault for being rude to our guest," April had sarcastically apologized as she looked at Kellen then to Venus then back to her parents.

"No need to worry Mrs. Dean. I have gotten use to her behavior, but I'm still trying to figure her out," Kellen chuckles, taking a bite of his green apple.

"Sucks for you because she doesn't like you," Venus then chirps as she spread butter on her piece of toasts.

"Retweet," April adds in, smiling at her bestfriend.

"Girls," Mr. Dean says in a knowing tone. "Be nice."

"C'mon now Venus, let's try to get along for once," Kellen directed his attention to Venus, looking at her straight in the eyes as he sipped on his orange juice.

"I'll pass," Venus declines, soon rolling her eyes at him.

"Seriously, what is up with you guys?" Mr. Dean asks the three teens with a nervous chuckle.

"I think it's because I tried to befriend Venus this year but was sadly turned down. Now the past is haunting her. Explains why she's treating me so horribly," Kellen foretold shaking his head—now apart of that was true, but that's a different story for a different time.

"C'mon Venus, how could you turn this boy down? He's a great kid," Mr. Dean snorted as he patted Kellen on the back.

"On the surface he is," Venus remarked. "I'm not sure what he is underneath though. Who knows? He could be a—,"

"I think I'm just gonna go," Sheema murmurs sliding out of her chair and leaving the kitchen.

"Yeah, me too Sheema, let's get ready to go to the park," Mrs. Dean agrees before she followed her youngest child out of the kitchen as well.

"Retweet," Mr. Dean chirps.

Both Venus and April looked at him with a blank face, "Don't say that again," they say in unison.

Mr. Dean sighed, "Okay, sorry girls. Just thought I could be hip like the cool kids."

"It's all cool Mr. Dean, you're doing amazing sweetie," Kellen grins.

"See? This is why I appreciate you Kellen," Mr. Dean hit his chest with his fist twice before he pointed at Kellen with a smile.

"Anything for you pal," Kellen says in a goofy voice which made the two girls roll their eyes.

"Alright now, you kids be good until we get back," the father says to the three.

"No problem captain. Love you dad," April blew her father a kiss and gave him a little wave.

After the three had walked out of the door the atmosphere of the house shifted drastically. Venus glared at Kellen while he ate his sandwich, meanwhile April felt the tensity in the air so she just decided to step out of it for a moment.

"I'm gonna go get the supplies for the project," April says to Kellen than to Venus. "Be right back."

"Cool, I'll be here," Kellen says as he turned his head to watch her hips sway, leaning back in his chair to stare at her ass while he bit on his bottom lip. "Damn baby, what an ass," he murmured to himself before he went back to his sandwich.

After April was out of the clear Venus finally spit her water at Kellen which got all on him. She then wiped her mouth with the back of her hand before giving him a fake smile, "Whoopsie."

Kellen chuckled bitterly, wiping his face with the back of his hands,  "Is that all you got?"

Venus narrowed her eyes at him. "Don't try to challenge me. There's a knife just inches away from my hand, and don't think I won't fuckin' slice you."

"Ooh. I think you should keep it down before April hears you," Kellen teases cocking his head to the side.

"Let her hear, I wouldn't care," Venus hissed as she stood up to her feet, sizing him up.

And what Kellen had said next was unexpected, "I think you would care if I told April that you're secretly in love with her."

Venus's heart stopped beating and her throat went immediately dry. She looked into his eyes, realizing that he was being completely serious. He knew that he had the upper hand in this and that is what scared her. But she had to pretend like she didn't know what he was talking about and just play co, "What in the hell is that suppose to mean?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about," Kellen stood up from his chair and towered over Venus. "Just admit it. You love her, don't you?"

"We're bestfriends Kellen. Am I not suppose to love her?" Venus scoffs.

"You playing stupid is only going to get you in deeper trouble," Kellen growls.

"By who?" Venus had challenged.

"By me," Kellen gripped her jaw tightly and made her look into his eyes. "You better play nice before I start to play dirty."

"You don't scare me Kellen," Venus gritted through her teeth, smacking his hand away from her face. Then poking a finger at his chest harshly. "Whatever game you're trying to run on us isn't going to work. I fucking bet you it won't."

"You should be scared of me Venus..because once you're out of the picture then April will forget that you ever existed," Kellen whispered darkly before he pushed past her. Leaving her in the kitchen by herself and her doubtful thoughts that was coming back to haunt her.
