We're all going to die unless NASA builds a rocket

(Republishing because some of you wanted to reread this shit)

About fifteen minutes ago, I was curious and Googled what would the government's strategy be to avoid meteors hitting earth.

Here is the Wikipedia article:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_impact_avoidance

However , if you're too lazy/ not bothered enough/ too many big words to take in after a school day/ you want to get this over quickly and go do something else, then here is the general gist of it.

If NASA finds a meteor headed towards Earth then it depends on how far away it is to combat the problem. If it's a few years away, then it has more chance of fighting it, but if it's a few months then we're stuffed. What NASA will do is build a rocket that will fly towards the meteor and break it into hundreds of little pieces, which won't do as much harm. Building this rocket- getting approval, getting started, getting materials and workers, and then launching it- will take about four years. It may not even work, because the gravity may reform it. In fact, it's 100% certain that a meteor will hit Earth. Whether it will cause human extinction is another matter, but it's quite likely. It's whether NASA manages to build the rocket in time.

I didn't manage to find out what would happen to the people.

There have been quite a few films involving meteors. One was called 'Deep Impact'. The general gist of it is that they found a meteor shower heading towards earth, and built a rocket, manned by a human crew, to explode it. Note that it was a meteor shower, not a single meteor. The government could only evacuate a certain number of people, so they made a lottery and certain families were picked. The rest had to either find their own way out or stay and die. The first meteor hit the ocean, and sent up a tsunami, which killed several thousand people, and most commonly the people on the motorway a few miles away who had been trying to get away. About a hundred managed to get onto a hill in time, but the rest died. Quite a few cities were destroyed, too. The crew on the rocket went up and exploded it, knowing they were going to die in the process. It's quite a good film, you should watch it if you get a chance, but it's quite long.

The other is called 'Greenland'. Same gist; except they didn't know the meteor was going to hit Earth, until about three days till collision. They evacuated only the people who would be useful in the new world, and put them into underground camps. So, about seven billion 1/2 people dies, and the 1/2 million that were left had to start again, with everything on fire and very little supplies. Again, it's quite a good film. Not as long, but I would recommend the other one instead. That's based upon my preferences though, not yours, so try and watch both.

So the entire gist of this is: unless NASA can build a rocket in time, we're probably going to die.
