Chapter 9: Truth's Revealed
(Jesse's POV)
I ducked behind the tall grass and Lightning did the same. We were so dead. If my dad found us, he would be so mad.
His car continued driving down the road, towards the abandoned barn from where we just came. He parked the car and got out, along with three men. Two of them were holding another by his arms, dragging him into the building.
"Maybe we should get a closer look." Lightning suggested.
I grabbed his arm, "Are you insane!? He'll kill us! Especially you!" I whisper shouted.
"Jesse, we need to know what's going on. What if they use that electric chair on that poor guy they were dragging? Then what kind of people would we be to just sit back like babies and do nothing?"
I just stared at him, trying to come up with a comeback, but nothing came to mind. I sighed, "Alright, but we are gonna stay at a safe distance."
Lightning nodded, and we both hurriedly and quietly ran back to the barn. We ran up to the wall beside the door and put our backs to it. I walked closer to the entrance and peeked my head in to see what was going on.
I saw my dad standing in front of the electric chair, watching as the two men were tying the other man to it.
Lightning leaned over me to look too, "What did I tell you. They're gonna hurt that guy. We can't just stand here, we gotta do something."
I hushed him, because my dad started speaking. "Well," he started, "thought you could run away from me, huh?"
The man in the chair didn't say a word. My dad continued, "I can't believe you didn't die so many years ago. It's pathetic, really. You should've just died and you wouldn't be here right now, would you?"
Again, the person said nothing. My dad did not look happy. He motioned to one of the men standing beside the chair. The man nodded and went to the switch, set it to the lowest setting, and pulled the lever. The chair sparked to life, shocking the poor man. He screamed in agony, writhing in pain. Then the chair stopped, and the man heaved in pain.
"Man, that guy sure screams like a girl, doesn't he?" Lightning whispered to me.
I hushed him again, while I waited to see my dads next move. He smiled, "There, that ought to wake you up a little bit. Now, answer my question. Where is Lightning McQueen?"
I gasped and looked at McQueen from behind me. He had a serious expression on his face, as if he was trying to figure all this out. I turned my attention back to the scene, my heart pounding in my chest. I never knew how cruel my father was. It killed me to see this happening, especially to an innocent man.
"Wait a second, I don't think that's a man."
I frowned in confusion, "What? What're you talking about?"
"Come on now, tell me where he is and I'll let you go, Scarlet."
This time, Lightning gasped. I turned to him, wondering why he was so shocked.
"This is your last chance, WHERE IS HE!?!?"
"I'm right here, Loster."
