CHAPTER X

The curse has awakened

After Aji's rather hostile performance, she was sat on the couch next to Hange meanwhile Commander Erwin and Levi sat across from them. All eyes were on her as Commander Erwin Smith took the initiative to interrogate her more thoroughly.

Surprisingly Aji didn't hesitate reveal what she truly understood about herself which wasn't much. She made the choice to confess as she discovered they were no enemy of hers. They got no clue to what she is.

A little reminder to her being? Aji is here to obtain and retrieve orbs from Titans. Why? She's not completely sure. She possesses the ability to camouflage her hair. A rather useless ability. She also experiments chest pains after obtaining orbs. She has the ability to summon her weapons. All powers obtained by the supposed name she can't speak of.

"Then you do have a name?" Erwin questions her.

She clears her throat. "Indeed I do." She glances at Levi. A frown clearly cascading his deceptively youthful face. Levi knew his dubiety was justified.

"Reveal your name Aji." She remains silent. The tension rises automatically in the room.

"My name cannot be spoken from me for it is dangerous." She rubs her jaw then folds her arms. "I do not know why it's dangerous. So save that question to yourselves."  

"What makes you believe it's dangerous?" Erwin asks.

"A natural sensation Commander." She gestures with her hand.

"If speaking doesn't correspond then at least write the name on a paper." Levi stands up and yanks a paper from Hange. He hands Aji pen and paper to write down.

"My name has no significance." Aji murmurs placing the pen and paper on the small table in between the four. She ties her short brown hair into a ponytail before revealing the name.

After a few short seconds she hands it to Erwin before Hange tries to take a peek at it first. No amusement flashes on Erwin's collected face. His blond hair neatly parted to the side remains immobile as his striking blue eyes seem unfazed with the revelation.

Levi demonstrates the same expression but as for Hange, it's a whole different story. Her brown eyes glint from beneath her glasses. Enthralled by Aji's name yet filled with anxiety.

"You say you don't know why it's dangerous?" Aji nods at Hange's enquiry.

"Yes."

She shakes the paper to Aji. "Don't you know what your surname symbolizes?" Hange rises from the couch.

"I'm the savior of souls?-" Aji repeats.

"Are you sure that's what it means Ermoza!" Hange grabs her hands.

"Don't touch me." She transports out of Hange's grasp and appears right in back of her. "Why are you asking such question?" Ermoza steps back as Levi rises from the couch.

"Hange. You have an audience waiting for your discovery." Levi urges. Hange pauses for a few seconds as she tries to mollify her outburst.

"I apologize." She laughs it off. "Losing my mind I guess." She holds her forehead. "Killing titans has taken a toil on me." She heads to the door. "In this stages of war we have come to doubt every information. But I do have one single inquiry to make." She glances at Aji whose real name is Ermoza. "That's your father's last name, right?"

"Yes."

"Then I'll see you tomorrow." Hange smiles. "I'll like to run some experiments on you if you don't mind."

She leans on her hip. "If it is for the sake of humanity then what best to experiment."

"Erwin. I'll stop by your office this afternoon to send you the paperwork you wanted." She leaves Erwin, Levi and Ermoza alone.

"Do you know the reason behind your parent's death?" Erwin interrupts the silence.

"We have enemies praying for our deaths. They lust for absolute power and the elimination of the human race. Believe titans to be fit for rule instead of humans." She lounges on the couch. "After the demise of both my parents, I was told by my mentor the souls collected from my parents and brother were passed down to the following Kra- person." She halts for a second before continuing again. "That will be me." She shakes her head. "I can't say much more. That's all I know."

"Who taught you to fight?" Levi asks.

She can't help suppress a smirk on her beautiful face. Her forest color eyes shimmering in nostalgia. "My mentor obviously."

"Why the reunion?" Levi enters Erwin's room.

"Aji's surname is indeed substantial and far dangerous." Hange appears with two dusty books in hand and places them on Erwin's desk.

"Tell me something I don't know." Levi takes a seat on a chair. "With the outburst you made earlier you clarified the obvious." Levi clicks his tongue.

Hange paces around the room as she plays with her glasses. "How can I explain this briefly?"

"Just get on with it Hange."

"Alright." She raises her hands before taking a seat. "Ermoza explained her existence meant saving souls but it's not all true."

"Not true?" Levi arches a brow.

"It is unclear to me if she lied. Perhaps she told truth because her eyes said it all. Maybe she isn't even certain what she is."

"Is Ermoza a titan?" Erwin asks.

"She's spiritus."

"Spiritus?" Erwin leans back from his chair.

"Spiritus?" Levi stares at her. "I thought those were just religious stories?"

"Her job isn't to collect souls like she believes, Levi." She turns to him. "I've read that surname in ancient books. I skimmed through them again-" She runs her fingers on the ancient book cover. "-to find the signs engraved on her forehead printed on these ancient pages. Her abilities and current-" She raises two invisible quotes in the air. "-symptoms-"

"What symptoms?" Levi interrupts.

"The chest pain she experienced in the training grounds was the beginning of the Reincarnation Development."

"Hold on. Hold on." Levi raises his hand for her to stop. "You're jumping around now. What the hell is she?"

"Her job isn't just collecting souls from the titans. She has the ability to reincarnate them in titan form. Her abilities are so powerful she can end up destroying the entire human race."

"What the fuck Hange!" Levi yanks her towards him. "Do you realize what you're saying?"

"It's the truth!" She shoves him away. "She has the choice to end everything we all dear." She fixes her glasses in place. "To declare our demise in a blink of an eye." She steps back from her chair. "She can form a whole army of titans if she so wishes." She glares at Levi. "She's no ally. She's an enemy for the time being."

"You suggesting we end this with murdering her?" Levi exclaims.

"Levi." Erwin calls out but he ignores.

"Not if she demonstrates her loyalty to humanity." Hange explains. "It's clear she's clueless to her abilities. We're losing precious time. The days are ticking. The Reincarnation Development will take place for two months starting today. Her first major chest pain was the start time. She is holding too many souls already. If she doesn't destroy the orbs before the Reincarnation Development then there'll be an army of Titans."

"I don't quite understand what you're spitting out just now-" Levi runs his fingers through his raven locks. "-but what makes you believe all that shit you read is true?"

"If you don't believe a word I said then go see yourself." She strides towards him. "In the back of her scalp you'll surely see the sign of Spiritus carved in it. She probably doesn't know about it." He clicks his tongue.

'"Hange." Erwin clears his throat.

"Look Erwin. I know what I'm talking about." She gradually runs her hands on her face. "She is a dangerous threat to humanity and she doesn't even know it. She's the key in saving our lives and destroying all the titans as well. If she plans to." Levi frowns at this. "If she were to destroy the titans she has inside she'll need two other forces. Obviously she has no knowledge of it at the moment. But if she dies we all die unless..."

"Unless what Hanji?" Erwin stares at her.

"Unless she has a kid."

"That's insane." Levi whispers to himself yet is heard from the two other people in the room. "What will a baby do?"

"She told us the orbs were passed to her after her parent's death. She's the last Krazestone." Erwin recalls.

"That's what the ancient book says." Hanji reveals. "If she calls demise without another Krazestone alive to take the orbs, all the orbs she has obtained will be released. The Reincarnation will take place before the due date. If she dies all those titans will be triple the amount we have ever dealt with. The lands will be completely dominated by titans therefore eliminating the human race."

"What is your plan then?" Levi asks.

"We're in great advantage right now." Erwin speaks up. "We'll make her believe what we want her to believe."

"And impregnate her." Hanji adds on. "We can't risk her dying even though she can regenerate. She will not die without another Krazestone."

"A pregnancy lasts nine months." Levi furrows his eyebrows in confusion. "What will that fetus help us if the Reincarnation Development takes place in two months?"

"Amazingly her pregnancy will last for a month and a half." Hanji reveals.

"You better be right in this." Levi warns.

"We've got this far. There's no stopping now."

"Then the act of rape is your solution?" Levi glances at Erwin. Waiting for an opinion or at least an objection. He receives a knowing silence. "Erwin. I trust your judgment but you can't possibly think I can actually-"

"She seems really close to you in some way but it's your choice. I'll let you decide." Erwin responds.

"You should be part of the proposition. You're a handsome man."

"You know I can't Levi." He sends Levi a faint smile. "Honestly if I could I would. Anything to save mankind but not this time."

"You can still do it with one arm. Think of it as an exercise."

"I'm busy and don't have time. She's in your squad which makes it easier. You are the one I can trust it to. If we weren't rational patient man, we could have done it by now but we aren't like those men. So it's best to get her to fall in love and the best choice is with you."

"What makes you think she'll fall for me?"

"Well, clean freak." Hanji strolls around Levi. "Erwin has a point in this." She rubs her chin. "She seems close to you-"

"Define close." Levi eyes her.

"You did find her because of the voice and was able to snap her out of her state. We have no other choice." She shrugs. "Besides-" She grips his shoulder. "-despite your tendency to intimidate people, torture the hell out of the enemies and your obsession with cleaning, I know you have a soft side. An attractive seductive side." She wiggles her eyebrows.

He shrugs her hands off him. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Don't act so clueless too." She chuckles. "I've seen you have a whole fan base. She'll fall for you for sure."

"It's your choice. Levi." Erwin reminds. After a long pause Levi finally has an answer.

"I always have to do the damn work do I?"

"Then it's set. I knew I could count on you."

"If she doesn't Erwin?" Levi waits for his trusted friend to answer.

"You know what you have to do." Levi cursed mentally at Erwin's words.

"Hange." Levi calls out.

"What is it?"

"What triggers the reincarnation of a single titan?"

"It takes a great amount of energy but what triggers it, is a single word said by her."

"What will that be?"

"Krazestone."
