Volo
If you have not finished Pokemon Legends: Arecus; then this will contain spoilers. Just a fair warning. Also, I am taking requests!
No words were spoken to each other that day, but none needed to be said. You were chosen by the Almighty Sinnoh to watch over the Temple of Sinnoh. It is a great and noble honor that those in the cult all know requires great sacrifice to be committed too. Volo was there during the choosing ceremony. Your heart stopped in your chest that day when the chief declared you to watch over the Temple of Sinnoh.
Your family was heartbroken, but also proud of you. Those who were chosen could never leave the temple as they had to be wholly dedicated to the position. It had been a month since you last saw Volo. You expected Volo to get the position since he was the strongest Pokemon wielder the cult had ever known. Instead, it had to be you. Perhaps... Almighty Sinnoh had other plans for Volo?
It was like any other day as you were inside the temple worshiping Almighty Sinnoh. You prayed at the altar, wishing for Almighty Sinnoh to bless Sinnohians and the Pokemon of land, air, and sea. And... you prayed for Volo.
"Almighty Sinnoh... please hear my prayer to you... I pray Volo will come and speak with me..."
The winds rustled your clothes as a small chill went through your body. The mountain was not for those faint of heart. As you finished up your daily prayer, you stood up, hearing a footstep. You turned around to see Volo, making you relieved that Almighty Sinnoh heard your prayer.
"Volo!" You jogged over to him as your heavy robes felt they could not hold you down in the moment. "You finally came and visited me..." You stopped a couple feet in front of him, seeing his steely gray eyes.
"Yes... I apologize for my absence." Volo took a step closer, his arms pressed tight against his sides. "How have you been faring up here on your own?"
"I have been fairing just fine." He seemed off, odd even. Usually Volo had a radiant smile on his face whenever you were around him. Seeing him with no smile felt there was no warmth from his character. "Although, the winds make it colder than it is for the time of the year."
Volo let out a small chuckle. "Perhaps I should give you an Arcanine. No doubt it will warm you from the chilly winds up here."
"That would be nice, but thank you."
You watched as Volo walked around the temple grounds. It was not off limits to the Sinnohians as both Volo and you often played together as children. A game of tag or hide and seek between the statues of the nobles who guard Hisui.
"Volo," you spoke up, feeling the unresolved tension between the both of you. "I wanted to-"
"Apologize?" Volo let out a small scoff as he turned around. The way he was acting... it made you feel uncomfortable. "Apologize for what? Almighty Sinnoh chose you for a reason."
You clenched your hands together as this was not the Volo you grew up and knew... where was his smile? "You are not upset?"
"Upset?" Volo snickered, a smile spreading across his face. But it was not the one you remembered. It was filled with something much, much darker. "Of course I am upset!" His voice boomed across the temple. Volo wanted his voice to reach the Almighty Sinnoh at the tallest point of Hisui itself. "The moment the chief pointed at you that day... Do you have any idea how much I wanted to strangle that old man with my bare hands?!"
You backed up, feeling a little afraid and nervous as you were seeing the true Volo for the first time. He continued as he walked over to the altar slowly. "I have trained myself for this position, day and night! I want to meet Almighty Sinnoh more than you could possibly imagine!" He turned back to face you, his eyes shining in the torch light. "Have you heard the news yet? People from the cult are leaving and making their own clans! One claims Almighty Sinnoh rules over time and the other space! Absolute morons! Both of them!"
His laugh echoed between the pillars. Volo wanted Almighty Sinnoh to hear him loud and clear. He did not care if he was scaring you. This was the true him, the one he kept hidden. "I will meet Almighty Sinnoh! I do not care how long it will take! Not even you gaining the position I waited so long for! I want to change this world into a newer and better one!"
"What?" You could not believe your ears. Volo wanted to wish something like that to Almighty Sinnoh? "You want to erase and change everything? Even... meeting me?"
"Yes, even that." Volo did not hesitate to answer your question. "Do not misunderstand me, (y/n). I hold you in a special place in my heart, but my desire to see Almighty Sinnoh is greater."
For as long as you have known Volo, you knew when he was serious about something. This, you could tell, he was serious. A desire so great he would forsake all connections to achieve. In a way, you admire him and the way he was so passionate about his goals. You always believed Volo would have been chosen to be the next guardian for the Temple of Sinnoh.
"But, Volo, Almighty Sinnoh will not come to you simply because you want to meet him." You stepped closer to him. Praying, wishing, hoping he was still the same Volo you love and remember.
Volo let out a dark chuckle, giving you a pitiful look. "Of course I know that. I will force him to meet me one way or another. No matter how long it takes, I will meet Almighty Sinnoh and unravel all the myths surrounding Hisui."
He came up to you, a small smile spreading across his face as he placed his hand on top of your head. It was something he did often when you were children. Perhaps he was not lying about being fond of you in his own way. "This will be the last time we will ever meet, (y/n)."
"What are you-" Volo ruffled your hair a bit before he pulled away. "You can't do this to me!" You reached out and grabbed onto his arm, desperate to keep him in your life. "Please, Volo! You are being cruel to me! At least visit me once every couple of years!"
"I'm sorry, (y/n), but you do not fit in my plans." Volo forced your hand away. He knew this was his true calling and nothing, not even you, could stop him. "I hope you will find happiness serving Almighty Sinnoh."
You begged and tugged on his clothes, wanting to make him stay in your life. However, Volo's strength and will was stronger than your own. He walked over towards the stairs of the temple as he knew you could not move past them. You watched helplessly as he descended the stairs.
"Farewell, (y/n)." Volo said without turning back to look at you. You watched as he walked down the mountain and towards his destiny Almighty Sinnoh had planned for him.
Nothing could compare to the pain in your heart as you lost the one person you believed would be in your life forever. "Almighty Sinnoh... I pray you watch over Volo. Keep him safe for your humble servant cannot..."
Years later went by as sometimes you would receive letters from an unknown sender. You knew they were from Volo as you could tell from the way the letters bounced off the page. You always prayed to Almighty Sinnoh for Volo's safety and health. For it was only Almighty Sinnoh who could keep watch over someone like Volo.
