Peter Mark Roget developed the work that still bears
his name called ‘Roget’s Thesaurus’ after almost 50 years.
It was published in its full completed form in 1952 and
remains to this day one of the most useful reference
books to any writer. Roget was actually a doctor, and a
famous medical lecturer and an editor, who was also
worked on a commission that he reported on London’s
water supply. He also designed a pocket chessboard.
When he reached at the age of 69 and had retired, he
was able to devote all his time to the thesaurus. He
has had a fascination with the beauty of words (the word
’thesaurus’ is derived from a Greek word whose meaning
treasure house). Roget’s main aim in the writing
the thesaurus was to be able to express by himself
accurately and without repetition.
