Sexism appropriation

School dress codes are often a source of controversy, though the topic has become increasingly debated as teachers now begin to crack down on it. Students are pulled from their education and told by grown men that they are a distraction. That a glimpse of their shoulders, a sliver of their stomach, or a peek of their thighs due to the clothing they decide to wear beneath the unforgiving Florida sun, is a distraction. They're forced to miss vital class time and are humiliated in front of their peers as adults ridicule them for merely a form of self-expression.

"It must be nice to be a full grown man that gets to stare at little girls all day and call it a job," said Cadence Roy, a junior. "I've literally never been pulled aside by a female teacher and been told what I'm wearing is too distracting, because the only people even looking are the adult men that work here."

She also brings up the sexist aspect of the dress code and the double standard there is between what's considered acceptable for boys to wear in comparison to girls. On the rare occasion a male's improper clothing is even addressed, they will often be brushed off or given a warning while girls are immediately sent to discipline to change.

"I've seen countless men not get dress coded for outfits that would've gotten a female dress coded in a second," said Jenna Cossairt, a junior. "Once in a while someone will say 'don't do this next time', but somehow girls are always punished for just wearing a tank top."

Though some educators argue that because dress code is appointed by the county—more specifically by leaders that parents elect—that the rules are more fair than students let on. There is a county dress code policy, but not one set by public schools in particular. It's also a common argument that, because the clothing that may be considered fashionable for men versus women is so different, it isn't inherently sexist.

"I do not think the dress code is sexist," said Mr. Galindez, dean of students. "However, I do feel that today's fashion allows more opportunities for females to be out of dress code. It is fashionable for females to wear crop tops and other tops that reveal their midriff. You will not see many males wearing these types of garments."

Whether or not there are valid points within the dress code, the number of complications there are with the way it's executed is quite frankly astonishing. Not only can it be sexist, but it isn't realistic. Clothing fits everyone's body differently, so a student could be in violation of the dress code for wearing a pair of shorts that might be deemed perfectly fine for another student with a different body type. There's also the ordeal with male teachers sexualizing these underage girls and how uncomfortable it makes them feel in what should be a safe setting. It's a common theme in history, but it's time for men to choke down their masculinity and let women make decisions for themselves. A girl's shoulders distracting you to the extent that you cannot focus is a serious problem; your problem, not hers.
