Chapter 12
After school
3rd P.O.V.
Astrid raced down the track like her life depended on it...which it did. I have to do this! No's not an answer! She told herself as she ran lap after lap, not stopping until her dog barked. That's when she took the warning, skidding to a stop and ran to the bleachers, acting as normal as possible as Stormfly layed on the bench next to her. Astrid quickly took out her homework and started to work. As she wonders who the warning was about, a voice calls out, "Hey, Astrid!" She sighs as she recognizes the person and looks up as she hears their footsteps jog up the bleachers towards her.
"What do you want, Hiccup?" she sighs, turning back to her blank papers.
"Who's this?" he asks as he pats Stormflys head and she growls softly.
"My dog, Stormfly," she says curtly.
"You look kinda sweaty. Thrilled I'm actually talking to you?" Hiccup asks, running a hand through his hair.
"Please, I couldn't be more bored," Astrid sighs tiredly. Hiccup knew she'd been running but he just had to mess with her. Not the reaction he wanted. He did a soft slide-whistle.
"That was harsh," he says and Astrid rolls her eyes.
"And what's making out with a different girl every hour? Good manners?" she asks sarcastically, causing him to chuckle. He then brushes some bangs out of her face and behind her ear with a gentle hand, making her look at him.
"Wanna be this hours appointment?" he asks in a smooth, husky voice, which she had heard before but never though he'd use it on her like this.
"Are you trying to 'huskinate' me?" she asks and he pauses with his hand carressing her neck.
"Depends is it working?" he asks with his normal voice. She glares at him as she shakes her head and he takes his hand away before leaning back in defeat. "I don't get you. You're so isolated the whole day then when I talk to you, you seem to forget about everything just to snap at me," he says and Astrid stuffs her stuff into her bag before jogging down the stairs, Stormfly on her heels. She didn't want to talk to Hiccup but he wanted to talk to her. SO, DUN-DUN-DUUUUN! He followed her. Hiccup walked with his hands in his pockets behind her as she walked down the street. Astrid thought he just lived the same way as her so she payed him no mind, until he followed her to her door step.
"Okay, creep, back up!" she says, shoving him backwards.
He smirks. "Did you just notice me?" he asks, holding back laughter.
"No, I knew you were there, I just didn't know you were following me," she tells him, trying not to growl or snarl. His smirk just turns into a smile. Then his eyes dart to her lips and, knowing full well what that meant, she slapped him and ran inside. She locked the door as he stared after her in shock, Stormfly going around back to the window they kept open for her.
"What?" he asks himself, "All I did was-oh."
Next day
Astrid's P.O.V.
I sat on the bleachers, tapping my feet as Come and Get It played in my ears. I then rip my head phones off as the memory of the weight room played in my mind. Hiccup's smirk, the way he slowly walked towards me, him reaching inside my freaking pocket! I wish I never woke up from my coma. It was Saturday, but I liked to hang out on the bleachers at school. It was as close as I could get to alone time. No one comes to school on Saturday. The sky was grey, but it was bright out. Light shined through holes in the clouds and made an awesome affect of yellow curtains cut through the darkness. I didn't wanna be home today. It's weird. Over two years have passed, but I'm finding it harder and harder to move on with each passing day. I don't know what it is. It just won't leave my mind: the image of my mother's crispy, unrecognizable, twisted, broken body on the screen of the hospital room. Then the emotionless reporter shoving a mic in my face and not letting me grieve. Is that why I can't continue? Is that why my time is standing still? Do I need to grieve? No. Grieving is for the weak...right? My father needs me to be strong. I refuse to crack. I'm broken from my thoughts as I hear foot steps climbing towards me. Looking up, I see it was Hiccup. I groan and put my head phones away as he reaches me and sits at my side.
"What do you want?" I ask and he grabs my arm before dragging me down the stairs. I rip my arm free and hit him on the head. "Where do you think you're taking me?!" I shout as he faces me.
"Just come with me," he says and reaches for my arm again. I pull away and run around him before running toward my car. I heard him chasing me. Why did I have to park on the other side of the parking lot? Without realizing what I'm doing, I double back and, with Hiccup not expecting it, he slips before finding his footing again. My legs carry me to the track as I wonder what they're thinking. Soon, Hiccup is chasing me down the length of the track, and gaining rapidly.
"Astrid! Hang on!" Hiccup calls and my feet hit the asphalt harder and faster. Suddenly, the track melted around me and I was left running through the tunnel at the airport. I looked over my shoulder to see the flames of the plane crash chasing me up the tunnel. I tried to run faster but my leg was suddenly off and I fell forward before skidding to a halt, my back scraping the ground as the track comes back. The flames were merciless as the explosion followed me. I was consumed by the orange and red flames just before I saw grass in front of my face, tickling my cheek as my breath became labored. I looked down and saw that my metal leg was gone. What did I just see?! My gaze moves down the track a few feet, showing Hiccup running toward me still and my leg in his path. He runs by it and starts chuckling as he reaches me.
"May I ask what's funny?" I snap as I sit up.
"Nothing, it's just...*Snort* well, now you really need what I was gonna take you to," he says before grabbing my hands and pulling me to my foot.
"What's that mean?" I ask, annoyed that my leg fell off. It's never happened before and I was wondering if Hiccup had sabotaged it and I hadn't noticed.
"Come with me and you'll see," he says and I roll my eyes.
"I can't walk with out my leg, idiot," I grumble, pointing at my prosthetic that was about a yard away. A smirk suddenly appears on his face.
"Okay," he says before I let out a yelp of surprise as he scoops me up bridle-style.
"Hey! Just gimme my leg and I'll walk on my own!" I shout, trying to get out of his grasp, but he was too strong.
"Nah, I think I like this more," he says as he starts to walk farther away from my leg.
"Well I don't!" I snap and he laughs.
"I kinda don't care!" He chuckles and I cross my arms.
"What do you care about?" I ask under my breath. He carries me to his car and puts me in the passenger's seat before slamming the door closed and jogging back to the track. He comes back a moment later, with my leg, and puts it in the trunk. Why?! Ugh, why did he have any interest in me? Why did he chase me around the track?! Why did I have that vision thing?! It was so...vivid! I never even had a dream that's realistic! Why was it when I was running?! I tried to remember everything that happened that day, tried to get explanations as to how I survived, tried to think of a way they could have found my body. 'How' and 'why' were the questions on my mind. Like: Why was I the only one to survive; what do I still need to do on this earth that my life couldn't be taken that day? I shake my head to clear it as Hiccup gets in and starts the engine. "Where are you taking me, psycho?" I ask and he laughs.
"Psycho's a little much don't you think?" he asks.
"Nope," I pop the 'p', "Not when you chase me down like a drunk raper that's thirsty for blood."
"Do you want your leg back or not?" he asks as he pulls out of the schools parking lot.
"What do I have to do?" I ask, willing to make a deal...to an extent.
"You gotta be nice to me for the rest of the day. Or I carry you every where," he says, a giant smirk on his lips. I let out a frustrated scream and hit the window with my fist before pinching the bridge of my nose. I think for a minute and weigh the options. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. But I didn't want him to carry me around every where: to my house, to school, to class, to lunch! I wouldn't be able to stand an hour of that! But if I'm nice to him, he won't leave me alone! "Well...?" Hiccup drawls, bouncing his eye brows.
