Chapter 1
Hiccup's P.O.V.
I climbed out of my car and stuffed the keys in my pocket as I threw my bag over my shoulder. I started to walk towards the school until one of my best friends, Tuffnut, jumps me from the side. He puts me in a headlock and I sigh in annoyance. I throw my bag to the side before grabbing his arm and swinging my body over his arm, twisting my head free and flipping him over my shoulder. "Uncle! Uncle, uncle, uncle!" he shouts and I release him, walking over and picking my bag back up. I sling it back over my shoulder and hold my hand out to help him up. He grabs my fore arm and I lean back, pulling him to his feet. "Hiccup, did you get bigger over the summer?" he asks and I stare at him with the "Really?" look.
"It's November," I tell him blankly and he just stares at me. He then dashes inside and I chuckle to myself. I go inside and right as I open the door, the principal's voice comes from the loudspeaker.
"Hiccup Haddock, please come to the office. Hiccup Haddock, come to the office please," it says and I start to walk in the direction. I walk into the office with a smile at the receptionist and the principal comes out of his office.
"Hiccup! That was quick," he says with a smile, which I return. I then follow him into his office and sit in front of his desk, leaning back in the chair in a comfortable position. "As I'm sure you know, we are receiving a new student tomorrow by the name of Astrid Hofferson," he breaks off his sentence as he sees my confused face, "You didn't know?" I shake my head and he sighs. "Welp, now you do!" we share a chuckle before he continues, "So, anyway, she's coming tomorrow and I would like you to show her around the school and help her out with any questions she has. Think you can do that?"
I smile before nodding. I loved new students. They were always so interesting and I'm always honored when the principal asks me to show them the ropes. It means he thinks I'm a good student and I can try to make friends with them so they don't feel lonely or left out. I absolutely love new kids! I was so excited!
"Great. Thank you and I'm sorry for always asking you to show the new kids around. It must get annoying after a while," the principal says and I chuckle lightly.
"No, no. I love doing it. I'll do what ever I can to help them and I like meeting new people," I get up and pause at the door before adding over my shoulder, "And it gives me an excuse to skip class." I smirk at the joke and, as he's about to yell at me jokingly, I zip through the door before closing it behind me, hearing him laugh as I leave the office.
Astrids P.O.V.
4:00. Last box off the truck and in my room. Stormfly, my dog, was laying tiredly on the carpet so I laid down as well, resting my head on her side like a pillow. I sigh with an exhausted stretch. I had been making trips from the house to the moving truck and back again all day. I was as tired as Stormfly after one of our runs. Stormfly stands up and grabs her leash from my dresser/desk, which I had been able to assemble. She then nudges me with her nose before dropping her leash in my open mouth. Why my mouth was open, I have no idea. I shoot up, spit it out and gag.
"Stormfly! Can't you just drop it on my chest or something?!" I ask, in a mock rage and she pretends to be sorry by pressing her belly to the carpet of my room. I laugh and stand up as she runs out the door and downstairs. I run to the stair case and slide down the banister, happier than I have been for the entire move. She's already at the door, fore paws resting on the window as she waited for me. I smile as I clip her leash onto her collar. "Mom, guess what time it is!" I shout into the house before walking out the door. I look up and down the street before shrugging and letting Stormfly off the rope. We then start walking up the street, her not leaving my side in this uncharted territory. I was rusty on my "Don't talk to me," look so this time was perfect to practice it. Anyone I passed, I gave them a scowl with a glare, making sure my self-defense knife wasn't visible on my belt. All they did was smile and try to introduce themselves. I groan as the fifth person today walks up to me from her lawn. Great, I thought with sarcastic happiness, it's one of those towns where everyone knows everyone and they're all hugging one another! The girl smiled at me as she held her hand out. I slowly shake it.
"Hi, I'm Ruffnut. You new 'round here, 'cause I don't remember seeing you. Unless you're some kind of agent. Oops. Forget I said that!" she says with a nervous smile.
"Okay," I drawled the word before walking away, Stormfly barking at her once then following me. Stormfly nudged my hand with her nose and I smirked at her. I chuckled as she lowered her forequarters and raised her hindquarters. I get in position before fixing my eyes on the small highway ahead. Stormfly growls competitively before I take off, sprinting down the sidewalk and she follows me. She soon bounds in front of me and beats me to the end of the block, next to the highway.
"Stormfly!" I yell as she doesn't slow her pace, running into the middle of the road. She turns back to me as I reach the end of the sidewalk, pausing in terror as a car comes barreling towards her.
"Stormfly!" I scream and she moves her head towards the car before her ears flatten to her head. I squeeze my eyes shut and turn my head away before hearing the screeching of tires and my loyal dog's bark. I open my eyes to see a red car stopped in front of her, tire skid marks stretching out behind it. I run to her side and wrap my arms around her, trying not to cry in fear at how close I was to loosing her.
I hear the door open before a concerned voice asks, "Oh my gosh, are you okay?!" I look up to see a big man in a suit standing next to me, looking at Stormfly worriedly.
"Uh, y-yeah. She's fine. I'm so sorry, sir. She just kinda over shot the finish line for our race. I know, I know, I'm irresponsible, I shouldn't let the dog off the leash, I shouldn't be racing her and using a highway as the finish line and hold up the traffic, I put myself in just as much danger as my dog, but we've been cooped up so much we just needed a run and I used the first thing I saw which, I know, wasn't the best choice at all, so go ahead and yell at me for anything I left out," I say calmly as I clipped the leash back on to her collar and walked back to the safety of the sidewalk. I cuffed her over the ear in a gentle scolding. She responds by folding her ears to her head and letting out a quiet whimper. The man follows us and puts his hand on my shoulder as I stop at the corner.
"Just as long as you're safe, there's no reason for me to yell at you," he says gently and it catches me off guard so I just stare at him. "Are you new around here? I don't recall ever seeing you in town," he says and I nod my head. He then smiles a huge smile. "Well, it's lovely to meet you, Miss..." he trails off and I take the hint.
"Astrid Hofferson. My family just got here yesterday," I tell him hesitantly and his smile widens, if that was even possible.
"Astrid, a beautiful name for a beautiful young lady! I'm the mayor, Stoick Haddock," he says, holding his hand out. OMGOSH! I can't believe I talked to the mayor like that! It felt great! I shake his hand firmly and his face falls in surprise at my strength.
"Um, I hate to cut this meeting short, but I should really get home and start unpacking," I say and start to walk away until he steps in front of me.
"Before you go, I would love for you to meet my son. He's a great person and I'm very certain you two will hit it off. I'm sorry for assuming you're single but I just thought a girl like you would save herself completely, that's how my wife was. Prettiest girl in town, saved her heart for me," he sighed fondly at the memory, I'm guessing.
"I'm sure he's wonderful, but I'm gonna have to take a raincheck. My parents are probably expecting Stormfly and I back any minute now and we live a good half hour from here by walking," I tell him, looking at Stormfly before patting her head. He raises his eye brows and puts his hands to the sides while tilting his head.
"I'll give you a ride," he offers and I need to use all my strength to keep myself from stiffening.
I shake my head, "No, if we walk it'll take roughly 30 minutes. 20 minutes if we jog, and 10 if we sprint. I was thinking we can get somemore running time." He looks at me worriedly.
"Do you always run this much?" he asks and I nod, wanting the conversation between us to be over already. "Come on, it's the least I can do for almost hitting your dog," he says apologeticlly. Stormfly licks his hand, causing him to flinch in surprise.
"That's her way of saying 'it's alright'," I tell him and he smiles before petting her head.
"Well, if you won't let me give you a ride, how else am I suppose to make it up to you?" he asks. I sigh in frustration.
"If I let you give us a ride, will you stop nagging me about it?" I ask and his eyes shine with happiness as he nods quickly. My shoulders slump and I say, "Fine," before he leads Stormfly and I back to his car. He opens the passenger side door for me and pulls the seat forward, letting Stormfly climb into the back seat, then putting the chair back and letting me in. I buckle my seatbelt as he closes my door and gets in the drivers seat. I wasn't quite sure weather I should trust him or not so I kept my hand near my knife, just in case he pulled something. I tell him our address and he drives, taking noticable detours.
"I have a feeling you want to talk to me about something," I say slowly after a pause and see his grip on the wheel tighten nervously.
"What makes you say that?" he asks.
"You're taking every detour you can find. AKA: stalling," I tell him and he sighs.
"Hoping you'll change your mind about meeting my son," he says shyly. I hear Stormfly sigh in the back seat; she hated car rides so I had to reach back and pet her head.
"Is he in highshool?" I ask and Mr. Haddock nods. "Then, chances are, I might meet him tomorrow," I tell him. Knowing my history, I'll say hi and he'll say "Get the frick outta my face!" Mr. Haddock smiles and makes a left turn, getting back on track to my new house. He pulls into the drive way and I turn around to click the leash back onto Stormfly's collar before turning back around to open my door, only to find Mr. Haddock holding it open for me. I slowly get out, confusion bubbling in the pit of my stomach. Stormfly climbs out after me and I drop the leash to have her run to the door, looking at it longingly. "Uh- thanks for the ride, Mr. Haddock," I say, shaking his hand again.
He frowns, "Please, call me Stoick." I nod, brushing my blonde bangs behind my ear. I walk inside, uncliping Stormflys leash yet again and having the Great Dane run upstairs to my room. Great. Have to meet the Mayor's son.
