(I wanted to title this 'Far From Home' but..you know..XD)
There were only two types of Vikings talked about at large: those who killed dragons, and those who trained them. But your tribe was one of the few too fearful to do either; your tribe didn't fight or train the beasts, it ran away from them.
It was somewhat of a lonely life. No other tribes wanted to trade with a village of cowards. You were all shunned by the tougher Viking tribes, treated as though you didn't exist. But other than that, life was good. Your village had come a long way in rebuilding itself on a resourceful island far from dragon territory. However, on one day, the ship you were on was caught in a nasty storm. The few men and women aboard with you either didn't make it, or went missing. And you feared you would to. But fate had different plans for you.
You woke up coughing, water spewing from your lungs. Quickly sitting up You doubled over as an unsettling about of sea escaped your lip. Once you could finally breath again, you took a few deep, shakey breaths. "Woah, it's okay, relax," a voice soothed from your side.
Having assumed you were alone, this sudden voice made you jump in start. You looked to your left and blinked in shock. Beside you sat a handsome young man you'd never seen before, with dark hair and broad shoulders. "W-who are y--" you were cut off as another wave of coughing took you over.
The man patted your back gently and began to stand you up gently. "Be careful," he told you in an asserrive yet caring voice, then slowly began to walk you away from the beach were you'd washed up. "You're lucky you ended up on an island with people on it," he went on with a small laugh, "most of the islands in this area are full of wild dragons."
Your eyes widened at his words. Wild dragons? Just how far from home were you? Judging by the colder climate, you could guess pretty far. But before you could ask, your eyes landed on a massive mound of red scales and sharp teeth. You stumbled backwards, falling to you behind. You shuffled away from the beast, eyes not leaving the terrifying sight, unable to find your voice.
Snotlout cocked his head at you. "What?" He exclaimed, as of it were strange for you to be afraid of this dragon.
"What are you doing?" You asked him in bafflement, "run!"
But the boy only laughed. "I guess you're not from around these parts," he chuckled. He leaned over and extended an arm out to you. Hesitantly, you took his hand and let him help you up. Once standing, you took cover behind the Viking, hands on his shoulders as if to use him as a shield. "H-hey," he stuttered, face reddening at your sudden closeness, "it's okay, it's just Hookfang."
At the sound of his name, Hookfang squawked happily, cocking his head at your strange behavior. You could barely believe your eyes. You'd only ever heard stories of dragons killing and destroying. But this one here, this Hookfang, looked tame.
Sensing your guard coming down, the young man went on to explain, "he won't hurt you, right Hookfang?"
The monstrous nightmare gurgled gently and took a step forward. As he did this, however, your guard went back up. You squeezed the man's shoulders and ducked you head back behind him. "O-okay, okay, I get it," the Viking assured you, prying your fingers from his skin, "dragons: not your thing." He signalled from Hookfang to leave, so the dragon did just that. Then the boy turned to meet your eyes. "Better?" He asked with an amused grin.
You looked around timidly, but there were no more dragons. You nodded slowly. "I'm Snotlout," he finally introduced himself, admiring your beauty with a gentle smile.
"...(Y/n)," you replied quietly. You then went on shyly, "I'm afraid I've come a long way from home."
"What makes you say that?" Snotlout wondered with a frown.
You laughed nervously. "Well, for starters, there are no dragons in my homeland."
"Woah," Snotlout huffed, eyebrows raising awkwardly, "I didn't even know there were places out there without dragons."
You sighed a bit sadly. "Which only proves my point further," you concluded.
Snotlout wasn't sure what to say. He felt sorry for you, and wanted to comfort you, but wasn't sure how to. So instead, he smiled kindly again. "Well, how about you come back to the base with me?" He suggested, "there are others there that might be able to help. And if not.." His grin widened as he shot you a charming wink, "I'm sure you could stay here."
You couldn't tell if your nervousness was for the dragons anymore, or for the way Snotlout was flirting. "Here? With dragons?" You clarified with a shakey laugh, "n-no, I don't think I could..."
"Don't worry about the dragons," Snotlout insisted with a laugh, then added sweetly, "I'll protect you."
You were shocked yet again. Not only had the handsome Viking succeeding in making you blush, but he had offered to protect you from your biggest fear. "..You must be the bravest Viking I've ever met," you admitted with a small, shy smile as he began to lead you to the base.
At this Snotlout raised his chin a bit higher. "I am pretty brave," he confirmed proudly. "But, you'll see soon enough," he went on, "dragon's aren't so bad."
You raised your eyebrows and muttered, "brave and crazy...great."
"Hey," Snotlout warned playfully. You finally found yourself able to laugh. And when you did, Snotlout couldn't help but join. He could already feel his heart thobbing for you. And he hoped that you'd decide to stay after all, to give dragons a chance. And him.
