Chapter 8
Next day
Calica's P.O.V.
The storm was still taking it's wrath out on Berk, so hard Hiccup refused to let Oceanmist and I leave. We did however manage to escape his eagle eye and make it to the cave.
"Ugh!" Oceanmist exclaims as she shakes raindrops from her scales, "Was he like this when you were mated?"
"No, he was protective back then," I say and she looks at me in disbelief, causing me to laugh. "Okay, it's probably time we went back, now, huh?" She sighs but lets me climb onto her neck all the same.
Hiccup's P.O.V.
"Hazel, have you seen Calipso?!" I call to my daughters room from the bottom of the stairs.
"I think she went for a fly, something about her dragon not used to being grounded for so long!" she called and my heart stops beating in my rib cage. Then the door opens and I spin around to see a wet Calipso wringing her hair out side before stepping in and closing the door. I grab a towel and wrap her in it before taking her to the fire.
"Calipso, you must be freezing," I say and she laughs.
"I'm kinda used to the cold, I live with a Snow Wraith," she chuckles and I look at her in shock.
"How many dragons do you live with?" I ask, handing her a heated cup of Chamomile tea. She pauses as she inhales the herbs scents.
"This is...m-my...favorite," she murmurs before taking a sip as I sit across from her.
"It-um, it was my wife's favorite too. We defeated a giant dragon together and ever since, she had a morning head ache and the only thing that helped with the pain, was Chamomile tea," I say, almost choking up and holding back tears as I think of how many cups of the stuff I made her.
"I haven't met your wife, where is she? On business?" she asks and grief clogs my heart.
"Uh, no. She, um...she was taken by dragon hunters over 13 years ago... I've been trying to find her and bring her home, but...I guess some people don't want to be found...or maybe she just doesn't want to come back to her family," I say, trying to keep misery from my voice.
"I'm sure she wants to come back more than anything in the world. Two kids and a husband that loves her...you do love her right?" Calipso asks and I bury my face in my hands.
"Of course I do. I'd do anything to get her back. Our children don't even know who she is," I cry before feeling a gentle hand on my shoulder.
"Hiccup. I'm gonna tell you something, and hopefully, it'll help you find who you seek. 'When you give up looking for something, it appears in plain sight. But to get her back, you'll have to use more than all your might'," she says softly.
"So, you're saying that if I stop looking for her, she'll show up in front of me, right?" I ask and she shrugs.
"In a way," she says, "Might not be in front of you, per-say, but she will show up some where."
"But what does the last part mean? 'To get her back, you'll have to use more than all your might'?" I ask and she shrugs.
"It's different for everyone. For me, it meant that I had to think of my family's safety...that took all of my strength and then some to stay away," she says, taking another sip of tea.
"You...ran and stayed away?" I ask.
"Not exactly. I um, got a threat, against them. I had to stay away to protect them. A few years later, I have it dealt with, still didn't go back. Thought that if I did, either I wouldn't be welcomed back, or there would be a back up threat that I wasn't informed of...at least, if they knew it was me. If my family had no idea it was me, I knew they'd be safe so I made a few visits to my old village to restock on supplies...and they greeted me at sword point. I guess that made it clear in my head that I was no longer welcome," she says, gazing into the flames.
"Did you have your mask on?" I ask.
"That shouldn't have mattered. They were fellow dragon riders," she says.
"There's another island of dragon riders?" I ask, shocked.
"Not any more. They were wiped out by hunters," she says, but her eyes don't shine with grief like you'd expect. They actually glistened with caution...
"I'm getting more and more curious about what you look like. If I told no one, would you take your mask off?" I ask and she looks at me.
"I-I...I can't, Hiccup," she says with more emotion than I expected.
"Look, I know you've only been here for a day or two but I feel like I've known you for...years...my whole life even. I keep my promises, and if you show me what you look like, I swear I will tell no one, not even my own kids, who you are," I tell her and she stands up.
"Hiccup, I-..." she cut off with a miserable sigh. I stand and face her.
"Calipso, if you don't take that mask off, I might do it for you," I tell her and she grabs her arms before taking a step back.
"You always were stubborn," she murmurs and confusion hits me like a Plasma Blast.
"What?" I ask.
"You'd never take no for an answer...it's one of the many things I've missed about you," she whispers and I take a step back.
"Who are you?" I whisper hoarsely. A pause comes before I hear sobs coming from behind her mask. Unsure what made her cry, (and hating the sound of it) I lunge forward and wrap her in a hug. She must really miss her family. She hesitates before hugging me back. I slowly grab her mask and lift it off her head, making her let go of me. I take a step back in shock as I stare at "Calipso", too much emotion filling my insides, I wasn't sure if I'd pass out. "C-," before I can finish her name, she made a run for the door.
I run after her and let out a battle cry to sound an alarm. I finally reach her and grab her wrist before spinning her around and holding her face as gently as I could. Her cheeks were wet with rain and tears, she was scarred and bruised, but it was her. She was scared too. Her eyes glittering with fear as they shook my soul. We stare at each other for a minute before she slipped from my hands and ran down the hill towards the docks. I reach for her but she's already too far; my worst nightmare was becoming a reality. I fall to my hands and knees in the mud as my shoulders shake with sobs of happiness. They soon turn to sobs of misery as I realize she's leaving.
"Hiccup! Are you okay?!" Snotlout asks worriedly as he shows up at my side.
"Stop her," I muscle out hoarsely before he shoots forward and follows the one person I've missed more than my mother. He gets close enough to the fleeing woman and tackles her to the ground.
"Daddy! What's happening?!" I turn and face Hazel and Louis before locking them in my arms.
"Is everything okay, Dad?" Louis asks and my tears of joy jump back into my eyes.
"Everything's wonderful," I sob, "Your mother has returned to us."
