Chapter 6
Calica's P.O.V.
Starfire's armor clinked as Oceanmist soared through the clouds, flapping occasionally. "Okay, now when we get to Berk, don't talk to anyone unless I say you can. And if you do talk to anyone, don't say anything about our names or where we live. Especially if the chief talks to you," I tell her.
"He can speak dragonies?" she asks in amazement.
"Yes. Remember, though, that these people are not friends. Okay? They're dangerous, ruthless, not to be messed with. Be respectful, and you also can't say anything to the Night Fury. If you get stuck, just ask me and I'll help you out, got it?" I tell her and she nods. After a few more minutes, I see the island of Berk through the clouds.
"Right down there," I say and she dives, twirling through the air and acting like her mother. I shout in happiness as the wind blows against my mask. She lands on the docks, the armor clanking loudly to alert the village that used to be my home. I hold my hands up as the vikings run towards us with weapons, Hiccup standing on the steps of the Great Hall. He looked like a dot from this distance but I could just make out his face. He seemed to be talking to a boy before he turned to see what the commotion was about. I look back at the village as everyone stops, Hazel at the front of the crowd, standing next to a young man around her age, who was rather handsome. Ooh, I sense electricity! I think teasingly as I see how close they were standing.
"We mean no violence," I announce as Hiccup pushes through the crowd, "I'm a dragon rider, that means no harm, and simply needs to restock on some supplies." Everyone glances around before their eyes land on Hiccup for instructions. My eyes widen as I see Astrid walk up to Hiccup and whisper something in his ear. His eyes flash with annoyance as he snaps his head to face her.
"I'm sorry, Astrid. Not now, not ever," he says and she scowls before storming away. He clears his throat before facing me again. "What can we help you with, stranger?" he asks.
"My name is Calipso Hamenderk. And I need to restock on yak milk, there is no more at my home island and I have no yaks," I tell him.
"Well, Calipso Hamenderk, my name is Hiccup Haddock, and I'm the chief of this island, Berk. Is yak milk the only thing you seek?" he asks and I nod silently. "My daughter, Hazel, will show you to the merchant," Hiccup says and I nod before dismounting Oceanmist and following my daughter. As we walk through Berk, I gaze around, Oceanmist still at the docks; she was too in shock to leave the place she landed at.
"My father would like you to know that you're welcome to stay here until the storm passes," Hazels voice breaks me from my thoughts as I pay the merchant for the milk.
"What storm?" I ask as I strap the vile to my belt, my daggers clinking together as I moved them. She points to the horizon and I follow her finger to see the darkest clouds I've ever come across. I peer closer to see lightning flashing to the surface of the ocean. I turn my head to the docks and sigh as the metal comes to mind, that made Starfire's and my armor. If we were to fly through that storm the lightning would fry us for sure. And it was only a few miles away. I look at Hazel uncertainly to find that Hiccup was standing at her shoulder. Their eyes were boring into my soul.
"We really would prefer if you stayed. I wouldn't be able to sleep soundly if I knew I sent you to face that storm and possibly not make it out," He says and I sigh.
"May I send a Terror mail?" I ask.
"Absolutely," Hazel says and she runs away before coming back with a Terror and a scroll. I write a letter to Valka and tie it to the Terror's leg before telling it where to go. It flies off and I watch it go, sure that it would be fine against the lightning. I bow my head to Hiccup respectfully as Oceanmist comes up to us.
"Thank you for allowing us refuge, Chief Haddock," I say respectfully before straightening.
Rewind
Hiccup's P.O.V.
"Dad, please! I need a dragon if I'm gonna impress Alicia!" Louis says as I rest my chin on my fist.
"Louis, I told you. You need to be 14 in order to have a dragon. You can train one in two months, after your birthday," I tell him, my patience slowly breaking away.
"But I'm practically 14 already Dad! You let Hazel train Daggerblade a day before her birthday!" he protests as I walk towards the door of the Great Hall, him on my heels. I pause on the steps and face him as he stops at my side.
"I let her pick her dragon a day before her birthday. I'm sorry Louis. Two months," I say and he's about to protest more but I hear a lot of clanking, followed by shouts of the village. I turn to the docks and see a Timberjack, clothed in metal armor, with someone on her back.
"Dad-" I cut him off.
"Louis. We'll discuss this later," I tell him before jumping down the rest of the stairs and running down the hill, my leg creaking a little bit. I need to fix that. I reach the crowd and push to the front before standing with Hazel and Aaron, Astrid's son. Her husband died a few years ago and the way she's handling it it trying to hook up with me.
"We mean no violence," the person on the dragon says holding her hands up, "I'm a dragon rider, that means no harm, and simply needs to restock on some supplies." Her face was covered by a mask, scarily similar to Calica's. Astrid comes from the crowd and stands next to me before leaning to my ear.
"Your children need a mother. My kids need a father. What do you say?" she whispers and anger boils in my veins. How dare she think I'll be with her when my wife is still out there?! She's probably missing Berk just as much a s we miss her. What if she can't find her way back?! What if Starfire died and she can't find any transportation?! What if she's stranded on an abandoned island?!
I snap my head towards Astrid and hiss, "I'm sorry, Astrid. Not now, not ever." She scowls before storming away. I clear my throat before facing the woman again. "What can we help you with, stranger?" I ask.
"My name is Calipso Hamenderk. And I need to restock on yak milk, there is no more at my home island and I have no yaks," she says and my heart rips when I think of her initials. They were the same as Calica's.
"Well, Calipso Hamenderk, my name is Hiccup Haddock, and I'm the chief of this island, Berk. Is yak milk the only thing you seek?" I ask and she nods silently. "My daughter, Hazel, will show you to the merchant," I say and the woman dismounts her dragon before following Hazel, seeming to know who to follow before I gestured to anyone. She walks at Hazels shoulder, as if knowing here to go. Has she been here before? "Hazel, make sure she knows that she's welcome to stay until that storm passes," I tell her quietly and she nods.
"Yes sir," she says obediently.
