Chapter 4
One month later
Hiccup's P.O.V.
I stab the map with my dagger in frustration. Toothless told me, when we got back to Berk, that the Rider and black Timberjack at the sanctuary were Calica and Starfire. We of course flew back right away but the dragon herd had already moved, out of sight, out of range. Our dragon squad had searched the entire Archipelago and nothing. I had been so close! I touched her! (Not like that! Don't take anything in this story the wrong way!) And I let her go, again! I take my dagger out of the table and run my thumb along it's blade, examining it. I was gonna track her down and drag her home if it's the last thing I do.
9 years later
Well, I'm 36, so is Calica, Hazels 15, and Louis is 13. IT'S BEEN 13 FREAKING YEARS SINCE SHES BEEN BACK TO BERK!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm about to die. I walk out of the house and mount Toothless before he flies me to the arena, where Hazel was working on a new trick with her Deadly Nadder, Daggerblade.
"Come on buddy, we can do this!" she says before he shrieks, unconvinced. He then flies to the top of the ring and hangs his tail to her level. She then runs towards it and grabs the end before he swings her up and she lets go, flying higher into the air. She starts falling and is about to hit his crown spikes but she lands in a hand stand before flipping onto his back. "See? that wasn't so bad was it?" she asks as she sits on the saddle.
"It hurt," he complains.
"Oh, come on, it couldn't have been that bad," Hazel replies. Daggerblade then flies closer to the ground and turns over, having Hazel fall off his back a couple feet. "Now, that hurt," she huffs. He gurgles in laughter as he lands next to her.
"Hazel, come on. It's your first hunt," I tell her and she shoots onto Daggerblade's back.
"Let's find her," she says, leaning forward in a determined pose. I smile before Toothless and Daggerblade shoot into the air, flying north, where the old nest was. Hazel and Daggerblade spiral through the clouds, Hazel whooping with happiness.
Hazel's P.O.V.
I can't believe this is happening! I'm going to find my mother and I am going to kill who ever is keeping her from my family...and me. Daggerblade does a spiral and a small dip before flying back into the air, coming to a glide at the side of my father and Toothless. I look down to see the ocean out of sight. I look at my dad with my begging face. He sighs as he sees me and Toothless pulls to a stop. "Go on," my dad says and I jump off Daggerblade's back, screaming with joy as he dives after me.
"Free fall!" I yell with glee as the air rushes past me. Daggerblade aand I spiral around eachother before he pulls up and I land on his back. He flies strongly back to Toothless' and my dads side.
"Got it out?" Dad asks and I nod. We then fly at top speed until we reach the ice structure he told me about. Daggerblade slides to a halt as we stare at it. It was huge, ice spikes shooting into the sky, the colors of blue and green mixed together. Daggerblade flies to the top and I see something glinting in the sunlight, stuck in a crevasse.
"Dad, have you searched this place?" I call.
"No. I just looked for the dragons and Calica," he shouts as Toothless circles the structure, "Why?" Daggerblade lands next to the crecvas and I dismount. I reach in and feel something slice my hand. I hiss in pain as I rip my hand back out and aply pressure to stop the bleeding. I reach back in and gently feel around until I feel a handle like thing. I grab it and pull out a dagger. I study the blade as I see scrathes in the metal. C.H, the initials read.
"Calica Haddock," I murmur as I lower the knife and look into the crevas. I notice it's large enough for at least a human to squeeze through and stab the dagger into the ice wall. "Dad, are you sure this place is empty?" I call.
"It was the last time I was here!" he yells.
"I'll be right back!" I shout and slip through the crack to come into a cave. I look around before walking farther in, the rock walls towering over my head as they mixed with ice. I see a place that looked some-what like a bed but at the same time, a little like a dragon nest. I go over to it and kneel next to the slightly highered pile of old, dusty blankets. I look on the left side and see something kinda like a nightstand. I roll across my back over the bed until I reach the nightstand. There was a half used candle and another dagger on the top. Strange. If they lived with dragons, why would they need to use a candle? I open the drawer and gasp at what meets my eye. It-it was a picture. A drawing of my dad, mom and I on my 2nd birthday... Tear stains were scattered across the paper, under layers of dust. Dad said he lost this picture one night when a rouge rider had invaded Berk. There was another peice of paper underneath the picture. It was a letter...adressed to my father, my brother...and me.
To Hiccup, Hazel, and Louis,
I'm so, so sorry for having to comunicate with you like this. I can't even begin to tell you how horrible this is for me and I hope that, when I resolve some stuff, you can all find it somewhere in your hearts to forgive me...for my unforgivable actions...that I haven't told you about. Hiccup, please do not try to find me, if you even want to. Despite how much I miss and want to see you, you need to stay away for your own safety. Hazel, I want you to protect your brother and yourself. What kind of dragon have you trained/want to train? Louis, take care of yourself. You were such a small babe, but if you inherit from your father, I imagine you as a very strong minded, loyal, and determined young man. I check this drawer every month, so please write back. I love all of you, and if the feeling isn't mutual, I completly understand. I only ask that you let me know.
-Calica
"No...way," I whisper, my breathing becoming rapid-ish as my eyes widen.
"Hazel? Are you okay?" Daggerblade calls.
"Hazel?" Toothless shrieks when I don't reply. Soon, I feel a hand on my shoulder and freeze, afraid to turn around.
"What's that?" I relax as my fathers voice says that and hand him the letter. He reads it before punching the air and whooping. "Yes! Now we can finally find her! Haha! What made you look in here Hazel?!" he asks.
"I-" I cut off my answer as I see yet another dagger in the wall. I walk over and rip it out before examining the blade. It had the C.H. initials again. I walk through the hole it was near and find a Night Fury scale on the floor of the cave. T-Toothless?
"Whoo!" I jump as the shout comes from in front of me. I pause until it sounds again and follow it. Through tunnels and caves and holes, I run until I reach a giant cavern where the shouts were loudest. I stare around the deserted dragon nest, listening to the voice that was full of excitment and happiness. I duck behind a pillar as a figure shoots up in front of me and flies higher, spiralling a few times. "Whoo! Oh, why did we ever leave, Valka?!" the person on the dragons back calls as the creature hovers in the air.
"Because we couldn't risk people finding us. Come on the new ones bigger," another person calls from the cliff, on the back of a dragon I've never seen before.
"Well, it's been what, nine years, and I still know my way around this place better than the new one," the first person said. Both the peoples faces were covered by masks. Who are they?!
