Dance
Sorry I couldn't get any chapters done yesterday. I'm almost done editing that chapter to New "Weird" Kids. It'll probably be done by tomorrow but this is the only chapter I'm posting tonight.
Anyway, it's set a couple weeks before the events of HTTYD 2.
Astrid shrugged into the red colored gown her mother had given her the day prior. Why did she have to wear a dress? Seriously, they were going to a wedding! And it wasn't even her wedding so there was no reason for her to dress like this, right? Honestly, she didn't even know whose wedding they were going to.
"Uh, Mom, tell me again why I have to wear this?" She looked down helplessly at the gown, pinching the fabric between her thumb and forefinger. "And whose wedding are we going to?"
"You have to wear it because we're going to your cousin Ingrid's wedding, remember?" Her mother asked, tugging harshly on a snarl in her hair. Astrid yelped. "Sorry. But no more complaining, got it? Besides, cheer up, your boyfriend will be there."
"But, like, it's not my wedding," She protested. "And how am I supposed to fly in this thing? It's too long!" She gestured down to her ankles where the dress stopped.
Her mother sighed. "You're not flying. You'll be walking- like the rest of us, got it?" She asked sternly and set the brush down. "Now, dear, would you like a braid or it down?"
"Braid," Astrid grumbled, crossing her arms. Why did she even have to go to this wedding? Even though Ingrid lived on Berk, she hadn't seen- okay she's seen her around a couple times, but she hadn't talked to her since before she left for the Edge. That was two years ago!
"Don't be so grumpy," Her mother said, patting Astrid's shoulder. "It's just one night, Astrid. It's not that big of a deal. Tomorrow you can go back to your skirt and leggings. But since this is a special event, you must dress modestly."
Astrid huffed. "Doesn't mean I have to enjoy it."
"No, but you might want to get to like it," Her mother said in a teasing tone. "Assuming you and Hiccup will be tying the knot in a year or two."
"Uh... I don't know," Astrid muttered, twiddling her thumbs. "I mean, maybe. We haven't really talked about it, but I suppose one day. I don't think so soon though. He's not even chief yet."
"Oh that doesn't matter," Her mom said. "If you love each other, make it official."
"Marriage doesn't make love official, Mom." Astrid rolled her eyes.
Her mother chuckled and placed Astrid's Kranson around her head. "I didn't mean it like that, dear. Nevermind that though, you're all done. Now stand up so I can see you." Astrid did as she was told, an non-amused expression on her face. "Oh, Astrid, you look beautiful."
"Thanks." Astrid tried for a small smile but it came out as a grimace. Her mom narrowed her eyes. "Sorry. I feel exposed. You know-" She leaned in closer. "-with no pants on and just a skirt."
Her mother tutted. "It's not like you're bare under there." She gestured toward the door. "Now hurry up before your father throws a-"
"Kiara! Astrid! We're going to be late!" Astrid's father called from downstairs. He had been ready a long time ago, dressed in nice pants and a nice shirt with polished armor. Well, as nice as you could dress as a viking. "Come on!"
"Too late," Her mother sighed and practically pushed Astrid out the door and down the hallway where they put on their shoes. "We're coming dear!" She called to her husband who was standing outside.
"Do I have to?" Astrid asked, almost whining.
"Yes," Her mother said sternly and pushed her out the door, closing it behind her. "Now, to the Great Hall's balcony! Oh I can't wait!" She exclaimed as they started walking. "Ingrid's getting married! Though I'm not too fond of her marrying a Jorgenson."
Astrid tripped. "She's marrying a what!?"
"Spitelout Jorgenson. Your friend, Snotlout's, cousin." Her mother made a face. "Yes, not too fond of it but we're going to congratulate her, not make her feel bad. Isn't that right?"
"I'm gonna be sick." Astrid gagged and held her stomach.
Her mother sighed. "Now, Astrid, don't be so overdramatic! It's not like it's you marrying a Jorgenson."
"Don't even put that image in my head." Astrid shuddered. "I'm dating a Haddock, that's bad enough." She smiled.
"You don't actually mean that," Her mother said, shaking her head.
Astrid grinned. "No."
"Good." They neared the great hall where a massive crowd of vikings were standing on the balcony in front of a small wooden stage. Her mother glanced at her daughter and shook her head. "Astrid, posture, stand up straight."
"Fine." Astrid straightened her back then craned her neck, looking around.
Her mother rolled her eyes. "Hiccup's probably already at the front. He is the Chief's son. They'll be standing near the front row." Astrid frowned. "Now, Astrid, no frowning."
Beside them, her father grunted. "Hiccup. I don't like that boy."
"I know." Astrid rolled her eyes. "But I do and that's all that matters."
"But I am your father-"
"Quiet now," Her mother shushed them as they made their way into the crowd, finding their spots in the front. "Since we're family we get to stand here," She said, Astrid on her left, and her husband on her right. "Oh, look! Hiccup's right there." She pointed a couple rows of people in front of them.
Astrid followed her finger and smiled as she saw her boyfriend in the front, talking to his father but looking quite bored. He turned around, catching her gaze, and smiled. She waved to him and he returned it before going back to talking with his dad.
"He's head over heels for you," Her mother sighed. "I can just sense it when he looks at you."
"Yeah," Astrid replied distractedly, not taking her eyes off of Hiccup.
"Astrid, the wedding's starting, take your eyes off him now," Her mother scolded in a whisper.
Her father grunted. "Take your eyes off him for eternity."
Astrid glared at him. "You wish."
The ceremony was boring to say the least. All Astrid could remember was talking, talking, and more talking while everyone else stayed quiet. Bored out of her mind, Astrid slumped her shoulder in apparently a very unlady like manner, resulting in her mother slapping her lightly on the arm.
"Ow!" Astrid whispered, swatting her mother's hand away, and stood straighter.
It went on for hours. Or that's what it seemed like. Why was this even necessary? Why did the whole village have to go see two people get their hands wrapped then kiss? Astrid thought it was absurd. Finally, they kissed and everyone applauded. But unfortunately, the Hoffersons and Jorgensons were all family now.
"Can we go now?" Astrid asked, crossing her arms. "I hate just standing here."
"You'll get to move around shortly," Her mother muttered as they began to follow the crowd of stiff viking into the Great Hall where all the tables were pushed aside so there was a big open spot in the middle. "Let's go find ourselves a table."
Astrid followed her parents over to a table but on her way she was stopped by her friend, Fishlegs, Snotlout, and the twins. "What do you guys want? My mom's gonna kill me when she realizes I'm standing here."
"We just came to say you look really nice," Fishlegs said, shrugging.
"Uh, thanks." She shook her head and raised her eyebrows at Snotlout who was staring at her, a smirk tugging at his lips. "What, Snotlout?"
"We're related." He winked at her.
She brushed past him, saying, "And I'm taken." Then she plopped down at the table her parents were sitting at and sighed. "What do we do now? Can I go home?"
"No! Quit acting like this or you'll be grounded from flying," Her mother said. "We wait until the couple has had their first dance then other people can join in and also get food."
Just then the music started playing and the newlyweds were pushed onto the dance floor.
Astrid rolled her eyes and turned her attention to the table. "This is all so unnecessary."
"Now, I doubt you'll think that on your own wedding day," Her mother pointed out.
Her father huffed and crossed his arms. "She ain't getting married anytime soon."
"Well why not?" Her mother scoffed. "She and Hiccup have been dating for two years."
"The boy hasn't even asked to marry her!" Her father exclaimed.
Astrid laughed nervously and rolled her ocean blue eyes at her fighting parents. "Guys, don't make a scene. Remember, don't ruin Ingrid's big day! Why'd she marry a Jorgenson?"
"Love is love, dear." Her mother smiled softly. "There's no reason for it."
"Well I know that," Astrid said as other people started heading for the dancefloor. "I mean, I'd hope I'd know that. Since Hiccup and I-" She caught her father's gaze. "Nevermind."
Then two hands were placed on her shoulders, squeezing lightly. Astrid looked up and found Hiccup standing above her. She smiled as he greeted her parents, "Mr. Hofferson. Mrs. Hofferson." He nodded his head toward the both of them.
"Hello, dear," Her mother replied, smiling.
Her father, however, rolled his eyes. "Aye, Hiccup. How are ya?"
"I'm well, thank you. You?" Hiccup asked.
"Doing alright." He narrowed his eyes. "Ya treating my daughter well?"
Hiccup swallowed. "Yes, sir." He turned his attention to Astrid and smiled. "What do you say we go dance, M'lady?" He took his hands off her shoulders and held them out to her. She grabbed them and he pulled her up. "I'll take that as a yes?"
She nodded and looked at her parents. "I'll... be back."
"Have fun!" Her mother gushed as they started walking away. "Oh they're so sweet." Her husband grunted for the third time that day and she rolled her eyes. "Oh shush."
Astrid let Hiccup pull her a bit aways from her parents until she broke the silence. "You cleaned up nicely." She took in his long sleeved maroon tunic, a brown leather belt wrapped around his thin waist, a fur cape shrugged over his shoulders, and the brown pants that covered his legs.
"Yeah, my dad made me dress nice too but thanks," Hiccup replied, squeezing her hand. "You look beautiful."
"Thank you." Astrid smiled.
The lively music started up again, viking dancing jubilantly, and Hiccup tightened his hold on her hand, pulling her into the crowd. He pulled her around and twirled her, following suit with the others. Her skirt flared out around her ankle and she laughed quietly as she was pulled back to him. Hiccup stepped backward, his right arm behind his back, and gave a short bow, then lifted his arm up, their wrists meeting as they danced in a circle.
Astrid laughed as she was spun once again, surprised at just how much fun she was actually having. She'd never danced before but she found herself not half bad at it. Though she had witnessed the traditional dance countless times around the village, so she had the move memorized.
Hiccup laughed along with her, his eyes gazing lovingly at her and she felt her insides melting whenever she made eye contact with him. He caught her in almost an embrace, then spun her around again. Thank the gods she wasn't getting dizzy. His other hand- that wasn't clasped in hers- sat against her waist as they skipped to one side, then to the other, her back against his chest.
Astrid was spun around so she came face to face with Hiccup right as the song ended. They breathed out heavy laughs. "Hopefully it's a slow one next. I don't think I could handle another fast one."
"Ditto," Hiccup replied.
The next song started and thankfully it was a slow one.
Hiccup took her hand in his and placed his other hand on her waist as hers was set on top of his shoulder, squeezing it affectionately. They soon got into step with the other vikings with only a couple mistakes- stepping on each other's feet.
The two kept their eyes on each other, never breaking their gaze, even when Gustav came over and asked if Astrid wanted to dance. She just shook her head and he walked away. Hiccup bent down, resting his forehead against hers, and held her like he never wanted to let go. And if she was being honest, Astrid didn't want to let him go either.
The son ended way too soon in Astrid's opinion. They stopped dancing but didn't let go of each other, their chest pressing together from how close they were. Without a second thought, Astrid pressed her lips to his in a passionate kiss.
A couple seconds later, Hiccup pulled away and smiled. "Isn't it rude to kiss at other people's weddings? Though... we have done that before."
Astrid chuckled at the memory and let go of him but grabbed his hand right after. "Then why don't we get out of here for a bit." She jerked her head toward the door. He nodded and followed her, glancing over at her father who glared before exiting the Great Hall. "What?"
"Your dad saw us," Hiccup told her once they were in a secluded spot- a few steps down from the Great Hall on the grass surrounded by the stone wall. The place where they kissed a couple years ago when they were new at the whole relationship thing.
"I don't care," Astrid said. "Now what did we come out here to do again?"
Hiccup laughed and backed her up against the stone wall, her arms pinned above her head. "Uh, I don't know. Kiss, right?" She nodded then he crashed his lips to hers, familiar sparks igniting in his stomach.
They kissed for a couple minutes, their lips moving in sync, until they were interrupted by a gruff voice calling out, "Astrid?"
Astrid cursed under her breath after she pulled away, breathing heavily. HIccup let her arms go and they dropped back to her sides. "It's my dad," She whispered.
"Oh." Hiccup pursed her lips. "He's going to kill me."
"Uh." Astrid looked around. "Go in through the back?"
"Astrid!?" Her dad called out again, louder this time.
Hiccup nodded. "Good idea." He pecked her cheek before running toward the back, making sure not to be seen.
"Astrid!" Her dad shouted.
"Coming!" Astrid yelled back and climbed up the steps. Her father was standing by the door, looking rather upset. "What's wrong?"
Her father looked over her shoulder and frowned. "What are ya doing out here? It is very rude to just leave a wedding. Especially your cousin's wedding."
"It's very crowded there. I needed some fresh air," Astrid lied.
"Mhm," Her father hummed, raising an eyebrow. "I could have sworn I saw that boy come out here with you."
Astrid gave her dad a look. "I came out here alone. Why don't you go sit down?"
"Yeah, good idea." Her father muttered and walked back inside, Astrid followed behind him. "Are you coming?" He asked once she started to wander off.
"In a minute!" Astrid told him, biting the inside of her cheek to keep from smiling. She spotted Hiccup across the Great Hall, talking to their friends. She walked over and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, leaning her head on his shoulder.
"Did he-?" Hiccup asked her, turning away from their group of friends to talk to her.
"He suspects nothing," Astrid replied, unwrapping her arms and settling for slipping her fingers through his. "I want to find out his reaction when he finds out we're already betrothed."
Hiccup laughed nervously. "He'll skin me alive."
Astrid scoffed and slapped his shoulder lightly. "No he won't. My mom wouldn't let him. She likes you too much."
"At least one of your parents like me, right?" Hiccup chuckled, letting go of her hand to wrap his arm around her shoulders. She nestled herself against his side and smiled lovingly up at him.
Snotlout gagged. "Gross. Do you guys always have to be so lovey dovey?"
"Oh let them be," Fishlegs scolded.
Tuffnut laughed obnoxiously. "Snotlout, you're just jealous because Astrid picked the skinny runt over you. Aint that right, Snotty?" Snotlout grumbled and looked away. "Thought so."
"I am not- okay, whatever." Hiccup said.
"You are skinny, babe," Astrid said. "But that's how I like them." She smirked then turned to Snotlout. "So, Snotlout, you're not my type." Snotlout huffed and walked away. "That should get rid of him for a while."
Hiccup laughed and kissed her hair. "I love you."
Astrid smiled. "I know you do."
Maybe going to this wedding wasn't such a bad thing after all.
