CHAPTER 6: Nightmares
Ella and the rest finally reached their school, even though they were late. In the hallway, students were seen watching news on their cell phones.
"Breaking News: Two minors from an apartment that was ablaze downtown were rescued and safe. If not for the city's new friendly hero, Howling Wolf. Though we might have the footage of this occurrence that took place as it happened."
PHONE FOOTAGE:-
News Reporter: Excuse me! Please tell us; everyone in this city, including the world, would like to know. Who are you, this mysterious hero, and what will you do next?
Howling Wolf: Well, it's time I introduce myself. Everyone! Call me- err- yes! Call me Howling Wolf! ARH-WOOOOOOOOOO!!
(Applause, loud cheering.)
"Bruh? Isn't it me, or did I just hear something amazing?" asked a male student.
"I know, right?" replied another male student, staring at his phone.
"Howling Wolf, hmm... what a pretty interesting topic, I suppose," added a female nerd student.
"Yeah bruh! That's why it's the coolest thing ever."
Ella noticed some students were talking about her, but as Howling Wolf. The news topic was trending on social media all over the globe, and that made her feel popular and very happy.
During the 3rd period in her class,
"Settle down, students! It is time for lessons to start," said Mr. Jefferson, writing on the board.
However, Ella's mind was not on what the teacher was writing. After closing her eyes slowly, she began to see a vision.
A vision about a beautiful forest with wild animals and a sparkling waterfall. A lone wolf was seen on top of a rock. It began to howl, but it sounded sad as it didn't have a pack and Ella herself was in that vision too. But suddenly, something terrible happened.
The whole forest was on fire and Ella bent down as the lone wolf came towards her. She laid her hand on the wolf's forehead to show that it was a sign of trust and sympathy.
Immediately after she did that, her eyes turned to wolf's and the animal wasn't a living being but a spirit. It was expected for the fire to touch and burn them, but it wasn't at all because there was a shield protecting them. When the wolf spirit went into Ella's body, she began to feel stronger, more intelligent, and braver.
The spirit inside her started saying, "Ella Johnson, you're the chosen one! You must come to this forest with the sword of the three wolves in order to save it from the Demon Wolf. You are the only one who can stop him!"
Then Ella asked, "But wait, how will I know where it's located? And are you part of the three spirit wolves, if I may ask?"
"That is correct, Ella, Ella..."
"ELLA!" shouted Mr. Jefferson.
"Ah!"
That was when she was back in reality again.
"I don't believe it. Were you even concentrating at all, Miss Johnson?"
"Oh, sorry, sir. I was lost, I guess."
"Well, Miss Johnson, let it not happen again, or you will be in detention for a week!" warned Mr. Jefferson in a harsh tone.
During lunchtime at the cafeteria, Ray was staring at Ella for almost 2 minutes. He couldn't take his eyes off her, and he thought, "Oh well, Jones, I bet she won't want to talk to me. But let me give it one more last try. I mean, what's the worst thing that could happen?"
So he walked up to her and greeted her, "Hi pretty, how's it going?"
"What is it, Ray, or whatever your name is? Just leave me alone, alright?"
"Okay, look, I don't know why you are trying to avoid me. It's not that I'm dangerous or disgusting, but just hear me out at least once, please."
Ella has a history of having scopophobia (fear of being stared at). And she hates it, especially when she has already noticed that Ray has been doing so.
Ella would not want to be friends with such a person, but she didn't want to offend him, so she thought of it for a while and decided to have a little chit-chat with him. But she wasn't going to take it easy.
"Fine, what do you want?"
"I just want to be friends with you, you know?" replied Ray, smirking.
"And?"
"And some other things, I guess. Wow! I'm short of words."
Ella laughs in a snickering way and replies, "Sorry, but I don't make friends with boys like you, and secondly, you don't force people to do that. It isn't right?"
"I know, I know, but I'm not forcing anyone to be friends with me. It's just that... I didn't have any since my former school, and I kind of feel lonely. You see, I don't have a sibling to play with."
"And that's none of my business, Ray Jones."
"Well, no probs. So, when will I see you again?" asked Ray, folding his arms. It seems he wasn't going to give up on Ella yet.
"Never! That's all."
"Come on, Ella, please? Let's get to know each other well. What about we'll meet at the park tomorrow at 6pm sharp?"
"Don't you have other things to do? You know what? Ok, that sounds like a date, then. I'll be there, I promise." Ella puts a fake smile on her face. Surprisingly, she decided that she would hang out with Ray by the next day, but unknowingly to him, she wasn't going to do it.
"Wait, you really mean that? Like seriously?"
"Yeah, yeah, now go before I change my mind."
"Great! Remember, be there," said Ray, who left happily. "Yes! Yes! Yes! She even said it's a date."
Almost near where Ella was sitting, Kate popped out of a trash bin and was covered with filth.
"Eww, why did I even bother myself with hiding in a trash can? Now, where was I? Oh yes! I overheard your heart-to-heart talk with that new, hot boy. Rawrr!"
"You did what?!"
Ella then noticed everyone in the cafeteria was looking at her. Therefore, not to make it more embarrassing, she went closer and whispered to Kate, "And if I may ask, how's it heart-to-heart?"
"You're asking me, Ella? It is nothing to be ashamed of, but I don't believe you're actually going on a date with Ray Jones. Oh my gosh! You know, you're a lucky girl, and I can't wait to pick you a perfect outfit that will suit you well."
"Thanks, Kate, but I'm not really going. That's one and two; why should I? He isn't that cute. Moreso, not my type."
Kate gasped in shock, as that wasn't the reply she expected. "What? Are you trying to say you'll disappoint him by not going on that date, even when he would be expecting you?"
Ella did not mind her friend. She was just enjoying the meal her father made with love, which was chicken meatballs with mushrooms.
"I think that's a bad idea you're about to commit."
"Then I don't care!"
"But trust me, El, everything will go smoothly if you give yourself a chance. I'm 100 percent sure it will be fun."
"Kate..."
"No! Not a single word, young lady. You are going to do it, and that's final!"
"Argh! Fine, I will go, but only because you forced me to."
"Yah! That's the spirit, girl. And guess what? We're going to have a sleepover at your place. I meant to tell you earlier, till you know," said Kate, smiling.
"Ok good. Wait a minute! Did I just hear you say, Sleepover?"
At Ella's house that evening,
"I can't believe this is happening! You, me, and we are having a sleepover," said Kate as she was jumping on Ella's bed excitedly.
Knocks on the door were heard. There enters Victoria, holding a tray of cookies with two cups of warm milk.
"Hey guys, I just came to check on you both. And look, I brought some cookies!"
"There's some chocolate chip cookies too?" asked Ella.
"You know it, sis."
"Thanks a lot, Vicki. Hmmm. Man, it smells delightful. Let me give it a try," said Kate, taking one cookie and a cup of milk. "Yum! Sure, your sister's cookies are good."
"Yeah thanks. Okay, I will let you two be and have fun. Good night," said Victoria, leaving her sister's room.
"So, what should we do?" asked Ella, turning to Kate, but without notice, a pillow was thrown on her face.
"Got you!" Kate laughs uncontrollably.
"Oh, you want a pillow fight? No problem, I'll give you one," Ella smirked, then threw two pillows at her friend back.
The girls were having too much fun and did other sleepover activities till it passed their bedtime. When everyone in the house had already gone to sleep, Ella started to have terrible nightmares.
She dreamt about herself at the Demon Wolf's secret lair.
"Well hello there Ella Johnson, so glad you could visit me," a voice from nowhere said.
"Let me guess; you're the one they called the Demon Wolf," presumed Ella.
"That is right. I believe you have the three spirit wolves in your body. Isn't it?"
"Quite so, but none of your business!"
The Demon Wolf chuckled in an evil manner and exclaimed, "Oh, you little pathetic mortal, it is now my business. Did you know I have been waiting for 20 thousand years to get my hands on them? Oh, wait, you really have no idea. Soon, this world will be under my control, and we spirits of evil shall enslave humankind!"
"Well, Demon Wolf, I doubt that," said Ella, folding her arms.
"What? You dare not believe the fact that I'll do this to your world?!"
"Yeah, right, and even though you have already succeeded in doing so, you know I'll be coming for you, and when I do, I'll make sure you won't ever exist!" warned Ella without fear.
"Well, is that so?"
"Yes, thanks to the incredible powers granted to me by the spirit wolves."
"Alright then, but before I disappear, let me make your dreams into a living nightmare! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!"
The Demon Wolf's army surrounded Ella, and she herself didn't know where to escape.
Some of them laughed, pointing at her at the same time, while the rest started raining insults on her too.
"You are weak!"
"Pointless!"
"You are not worthy of the powers of the three spirit wolves! You have been tricked into believing so."
"That is not true! I'm not afraid of you. All of you!" shouted Ella.
But standing behind her was a big, ugly monster that looked much like a wendigo, and that made Ella a little bit scared.
The monster said in a deep voice, "You know, Ella Johnson, you will never defeat the Demon Wolf as you think. He is way too powerful and unstoppable. Darkness shall rule the light, and once you are gone, your foolish dead mother will not see you again."
"No! Leave my mother alone! She has nothing to do with this, you hear me?!"
"Aww, look at the poor girl missing her mommy so much. Well, too bad, so sad," said another evil spirit.
When Ella couldn't take the insults towards her and her mother anymore, she growled lustily and shifted into her half-wolf form.
She went after the evil spirits and slashed them till they disappeared into dust.
"I'll never surrender to Demon Wolf! All creatures of evil shall be destroyed!" said Ella in a deep, hollow voice mixed with her own, and this time it was the spirit wolves talking.
Suddenly outside the Demon Wolf's lair, the sky turned red and the ground splinted as it was creating a big, deep hole. Ella saw her mother coming out of that hole and was shocked.
"Ella!" yelled her mother.
"M-m-mom?"
"Ella, it's good to see you again, sweetheart. Come with me, my child, and let us be together again." She smiled as she stretched her hands toward her daughter.
"I'm coming for you, mom!"
Tears started rolling down Ella's cheeks as she ran to embrace her mother, for it was tears of joy.
But unfortunately, the ground continued to split, and it was becoming too unstable. When Ella stopped, she didn't see her mother again.
"Mom, mom!" she cried out loud, but yet there was no response. The ground opened up and began to shallow Ella, and she ended up in a very dark place. Unknown, like a void.
Immediately, Ella woke up from her horrible nightmare, and she screamed that it had awakened everyone in the house. That nightmare only lasted for 45 minutes, and she was sweating profusely.
Mr. Joe and Victoria rushed into her room while Kate was surprised, only to see Ella frightened and panting abnormally.
"Sweetie, what happened?" asked Mr. Joe, looking around.
While sobbing, she replied, saying, "Dad? I saw mom alive, but..."
"Shhhh, hey, it's alright. Everything will be fine," said Mr. Joe as he came closer to her.
"No Dad! It won't. Everything I saw in my dream was almost real!"
"But El, calm down. It was just a terrible dream that won't come true," added Kate.
"You think so? How can you be sure?" asked Ella.
"Kate is right. Nothing is going to happen to you. We promise," replied Victoria.
"Yes, sweetie, we're always going to protect and look out for each other. That is what matters most," said Mr. Joe.
"Nothing is going to get in our way, and don't forget, even though your mother is no more, at least she still loves you and nothing else. She's gone in flesh but not her soul, and she will be with you always."
Ella smiled and hugged her father. "Thanks, Dad. I hope this will be all over."
"Hey, whatever is bothering you, you can count on us, me and your sister."
"And what about her bestie? Humph!" said Kate as she turned away.
"Ok, you can count on your friends too," added Mr. Joe, smiling.
"Who wants a family hug?" asked Victoria.
In the end, they all hugged each other and felt relieved.
