Prologue | River
"C'mon, Bone! The water is great!" I called to my best friend. Bone had been my best friend since the day I met him. It didn't matter to me that he was from a different tribe, and if we didn't mind, that's all that mattered. Bone splashed in after me, his dark grey paws splashing the chilled water on my silvery coat. I let out a playful growl and off we went, tumbling down the stream, biting teasingly at each other's necks. When we were finished playing I shook the water of my body and Bone did his. I gave him a toothy grin, knowing that our playing wasn't quite over yet. We were both but 6 moons old, and any wolf pup our age was never done playing. We raced, as we always do, to the tip of rocky peak. We tore across the fields and forest, our tongues wagging out of our mouths, as the great sky darkened marking the coming of dusk. We arrived at the peak, forgetting the race altogether, and stared, spellbound, at the sky, flushed with the colors of twilight. There we sat, watching the sun set, until it disappeared into the trees.
Then we both knew it was time to go. I smiled at him again and he said, "Tomorrow, River? Usual time?"
"Of course." I said, nipping at his ear.
He headed in the direction of his tribe and I watched him till he was a speck among the trees. I let out a happy sigh. Bone would always be my best friend, and no tribe rivalry could ever stop us. Right?
