Howl: Moon Rising

It was a dark and 'stormy' night. Fog rolled in, bathing the silver half moon. Miah and Storm were prowling through the oak forest like wolves on the hunt.

"Miah," Storm asked his friend.

"What now, Storm?" Miah asked, flicking her tail angrily.

"Do you think It will show up when we find the clearing it's hanging out in?" Storm meowed, worried. Miah looked up at the shining moon and then back at Storm. "I sure hope so,"

She meowed. "Or we would have wasted all of our time!"

Storm was a Chartreux tom- cat. He had gray fur that almost always looked blue (A Navy Blue) and amber eyes that shone like twin harvest moons. He liked writing and had a dream to become a famous writer. He did not like scary stuff. Storm got frightened or startled quite easily. You could call him a coward.

Miah was a silver tabby Egyptian Mau she- cat with yellow eyes. She enjoyed arts and music and above all, enjoyed scary stuff quite a bit, about the opposite of Storm in some ways. As the cats walked in the oak forest, they came across a clearing.

"Yes I believe we found it!" Storm yowled.

"Shh!" Miah hissed at him. "Look!" She angled her tail to a misty figure. It was a dark gray she- cat with red eyes. She was standing on her hind legs chanting. The mist surrounded her, the moonlight shining on her. "This is so cool!" Miah whispered.

"I'm afraid I can't agree with you," Storm meowed, hiding behind Miah and trembling.

Miah rolled her eyes. Then, suddenly, the ghostly she- cat whipped her head around to stare at Miah and Storm. "Run," Miah whispered to Storm, and the two cats went jolting off, as fast as they could.

"Is it following us?" Storm asked as he craned his neck back to see.

"I don't think so," Miah panted.

"Can we stop then?" Storm asked.

"Sure," The two cats halted to a stop, and then looked around nervously. "The coast is clear," Miah meowed. "No cat phantom- vampire- zombie guy."

Storm was still trembling. "Good," He meowed.

Miah looked up to see a great oak tree. "We could climb up here," She suggested. Storm nodded. "Good idea, we're cats, after all."

The two cats unsheathed their claws and dug them into the bark.

Once they heaved themselves up, Miah meowed, "Jest to prepare you, Storm, we have to spend the night here,"

Storm shivered. "Oh, great." He mumbled.

A moment later, heavy pawsteps thundered toward them. The cats' ears perked up as they eyed their surroundings curiously. As the large creature ran, they could hear leaves and branches cracking under its weight. The thing ran into the clearing. It's eyes scanned the clearing and eventually rested on Storm and Miah.

Storm shook his head. "Shoot." He stomped his paw lightly on the branch. The thing had dark gray fur and red eyes. It was back. It ran at the tree, putting all its weight on it.

Storm lost his balance, yowling in surprise as he began to tumble off.

Miah grabbed his scruff, hulling him back up.

"The- thanks," Storm stammered. He peered down, and when he saw the gray cat creature he yelped and nuzzled Miah.

Miah could feel him trembling.

Meanwhile, down below, It was howling in rage and shaking the tree in furious effort.

Then, a few dark cats slunk through the shadows.

There were about three of them. One nodded to the others. They nodded back. Two of them jumped onto it, yowling and clawing.

It jumped in surprise, fighting back, but eventually reatrated, running through the forest. The third cat climbed up the tree. "You can come down now,"

She meowed. Miah and Storm obeyed.

Once they got down, the three cats got in line, sitting up and looking proud.

"You don't have to thank us," The she- cat meowed.

Now that Miah could see clearly, she noticed the she- cat was tortoiseshell and white, with amber eyes. "I am Maple," She meowed.

Then she turned to the black tom to her right. "This is Shadow."

She meowed. Shadow dipped his head, She then turned to the orange tabby she- cat to her left. "And this is Pumpkin."

Pumpkin grinned shyly and ducked her head.

"Thank you for saving us,"

Storm politely dipped his head. "Now we really must be going."

He broke into a trot, and then looked back at Miah like he expected her to follow him. "Come on back," She meowed.

Storm ducked his head and reluctantly walked back. "Okay, fine,"

He grumbled. Then Miah turned to Maple and her friends.

"Do you guys know who might help us in this mystery?"

She asked. Storm looked at his paws. "Oh- no,"

He whispered. Maple winked at them. "We know just the place,"

The next day, Miah, Storm, Maple, Shadow, and Pumpkin arrived at the place Maple was meowing about

"Wow. It's a lab." Storm meowed as he looked curiously at the tall building. "I sure hope it won't fall on us,"

"Go on in," Maple purred.

She opened the door as the cats walked in. The inside was huge. It had quartz flooring and experiment tools, as well as other science things.

A large chocolate- brown Havana Brown tom was messing with the tubes. He wore a lab coat and goggles. When he saw Maple, he trotted over, purring. "Hello, Maple, Shadow, and Pumpkin!"

He meowed. Pumpkin dipped her head. "H- hello, Professor," She meowed shyly.

Shadow looked at The Professor, and then his paws.

"Professor," Meowed Maple next to Pumpkin and Storm. "This is Miah," She pointed her orange and black tail to Miah. "And this is Storm." She did the same to Storm.

Then she turned to Miah and Storm. "Guys, this is Professor Tuna, but we call him Professor of The Professor."

"Uh, hi," Storm waved gingerly. Miah laughed nervously.

"Hello, young kittens!" The Professor purred. "What brings you to my lab today?"

"We were hoping to-" Then Storm interrupted Miah.

"You mean you were hoping to f-" Miah flashed him a look that made him stop meowing. "I apologize for my friend's rudeness," Miah flashed a look at Storm. Storm looked at Pumpkin.

"We would like to know about the dark gray demon monster cat haunting Sharp Spin forest."

Miah finished. The Professor thought for a minute. "Oh yes I do," He meowed.

Then he signaled with his tail for Miah and the others to circle him. Once everyone was assembled, he began. "Once upon a time, about fifty cat- years ago, there was a cat named Taylor Silverstripe. Taylor was a heavenly beautiful silver tabby with green eyes. She was a poet and was said to be one of the greatest of all time. One time, she took her poems to present them to King Linkish of Catsburgh. She had expected him to love her poems like everyone else, but she was so wrong. The King hated them so much, he punished her for their existence. He turned her silver tabby fur into an ugly dark gray and her emerald eyes to a red. Nowadays, she haunts Sharp Spin forest, planning her wrath on the King who destroyed her." The Professor looked at every cat.

Pumpkin's eyes sparkled with curiosity.

Storm looked terrified.

Shadow rolled his eyes.

Maple nodded. "So what do we do now?" Storm asked.

"We kill the monster!" Miah hissed.

Storm jumped in surprise.

"I agree," Maple meowed. "We should."

"I will stay back," Storm volunteered.

"No!" Maple and Miah yowled at once. Storm jumped in surprise again.
"You won't need me," Maple meowed. "I'll stay back with the Professor."

Miah nodded. "That's fine."

"But you should take Pumpkin and Shadow," Maple meowed. "Pumpkin's sense of direction and Shadow's fighting skills will be useful."

Miah shrugged. "If you say so,"

"Okay," Storm meowed suddenly and uneasily. "But what if we find a zombie, vampire, or werewolf..." Storm trailed off.

"That won't happen." Miah meowed.

That night, the four cats arrived at the clearing where they had found the monster.

Sure enough, it was there. "Attack!" Miah yowled.

Shadow, Pumpkin, and Miah yowled jumping on the monster.

Storm hesitated before joining.

The monster fought back. Hard

. Just as Miah was about to sink her claws into its neck, one of the monster's huge, gray paws smashed into Storm, who was sinking his teeth into it's back. It left a long gash on his underbelly.

Storm yowled and fell back in pain.

"Storm!" Miah yowled.

Blood was oozing out of the gash.

Shadow and Pumpkin paused, looking at Storm with anxiety. "Keep fighting!" Miah hissed at them. "I'll deal with Storm!"

The two cats obeyed. Biting and clawing as fiercely as ever.

Miah got some cobwebs to stop the bleeding but the blood kept on going.

Storm lifted his head weakly. "M- Miah," He rasped. "T- thank you for everything..." Miah's heart was pounding, tears welled in her eyes.

"No, Storm! You can't die!"

"It is my time to join the stars," Storm raped weakly. "I will always be with you..." Storm's head fell on the dirt. He went limp. He stopped breathing. Storm was dead.

"NO!!!!!!!!!" Miah yowled at the moon. "Why?!"

She walked over to the monster, bristling, claws unsheathed, and teeth bared. "Here's what you get for what you've done!"

Miah grabbed a sharp stick with her teeth and shoved it through its chest. As the stick went through, the monster's red gaze glittered with pain.

It yowled, and then dropped, dead.

Miah picked it up by the neck and violently shook it.

The whole clearing was painted with crimson blood.

Miah threw the monster and it landed in a tree.

Blood stained her silver tabby fur, her claws, and her teeth.

Her claws were unsheathed still, teeth bared, tail lashing, she was panting hard, and had a wild look in her eyes.

Pumpkin and Shadow stared at Storm.

"Is he dead?" Pumpkin asked as she bent down to lick Storm's ear.

"Of course he is, you idiot!" Shadow snarled at Pumpkin.

"Let's carry him back." Miah meowed, blinking back tears.

The three cats then worked together to carry Storm up and out of the forest for burial.

Back at the lab, Miah was telling Maple and The Professor what happened.

Maple shook her head sadly. "I'm sorry, Miah, about Storm." She meowed.

"I know," Miah meowed, choking on the tears slithering up her throat.

"I have something to say," The Professor meowed suddenly. "A little secret of mine," He shut the door quietly, locking it. "You see, I'm not quite alive."
