4. Someone Help Me This is So Boring

Don't make your readers say this. It's just bad.

Try and look at your story from someone else's point of view. You may think it's perfectly entertaining for Cactus to spend four chapters wandering around chatting to people and then, finally, at the end of the fourth chapter finding something interesting. Some of your readers may like this as well--they're the patient ones. You probably enjoy this because you like Cactus and you like to put them in different situations for your entertainment, which I do as well with all of my characters, but those mundane situations need to be spread out throughout the book. Your character cannot spend four chapters doing absolutely nothing.

WoF canon starts out a bit boringly if I'm honest. They all live in the tunnels and not much happens. However, the setting of the tunnels and the interesting nature of the characters keeps it, to some extent, entertaining. Then it's all shaken up by the appearance of Morrowseer, and that's pretty close to the beginning of the book yet. Also, the prologue really hooks readers. A friend I introduced to the series was having a problem getting to the bit with Morrowseer because she found it boring, but once she did she was completely hooked and has completely devoured every book since then. Don't lose your readers after the prologue.

But again we come to an important balance. If something happens right away and the event comes to a close rather quickly, and your character makes some groundbreaking discovery right then and there, people will think you were too lazy to build up to important things or that your writing is sub-par. I read a book like this and almost immediately put it down as the main character punched a werewolf and made a shocking discovery within, and I'm not kidding, the first five pages. That sounds snooty but it was really abrupt and annoying when it happened. Don't do that. It rushes the action and basically destroys the immersive nature of a good story.
