Diversity
Requested by ariescherries
Woo, this is a topic I get so heated about for so many reasons so I was excited when this was requested.
Unsurprisingly, I see a lot more diversity in fanfiction than I do in normal fandoms (depending on the fandom), but there are still good and bad ways to do things.
Remember what area your story takes place in. There's going to be a lot more diversity in LA compared to rural Kentucky. Or maybe your characters diversity is a big point. Are they gay in a Christian town? Muslim in a discriminatory state?
Either way, there's more to every person besides the minority they belong to. I'm LGBTQ+, and I run my school's Pride Alliance, but my entire world doesn't revolve around that. Don't just make your character a minority.
I think including characters from minorities no matter what it is is incredibly important because even if it feels like you're touching a tiny amount of people, you're making that main stream to your audience and giving them a message.
It's 2019 y'all, we can have characters that aren't straight, aren't white, and of a different religion. Include it!
Requests are open, so is asking questions!
