Chapter 25
"May the Valkyries welcome you, and lead you through Odin's great battlefield" said Gobber. We were all standing by the cliff as we stared at the ship going away in the distance, the ship that held Stoick's dead body on its deck, covered in a blanket and with his helmet on top of it. Hiccup was at the edge of the cliff, while Fishlegs, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Snotlout, Valka, Astrid and I were some meters behind with bows in our hands, waiting for the signal to shoot the arrows lit on fire towards the boat "May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we might hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla" continued Gobber as he handed the bow and arrow to Hiccup "And know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings" the blacksmith placed a hand on my friend's shoulder, as I stared at him sadly. I could tell by the way he was standing that he was trying his best not to cry, and it hurt me to see him like that, but there wasn't anything I could do. Nothing could compensate for the loss of a parent; I had learned that the hard way "For a great man has fallen" his hand slipped of the Viking's shoulder. I looked away, because if I kept staring at them I would cry, and that was the last thing I needed.
Even though I knew little about Stoick, just what Hiccup told me, the things he did and the things he said were enough for me to know that he, indeed, was a great man. I was wrong in misjudging him, everything negative I had thought of him was completely wrong, I'm not saying that he was perfect, nobody's perfect, but the awful things I had assumed about him weren't his flaws, he had other flaws that weren't the ones I presumed.
"A warrior" I looked at my side, all the people were showing their sadness in their own particular way "A chieftain" Snotlout and the twins' eyes were crystalized "A father" Fishlegs had some silent tears spilling from his eyes, while Eret was staring solemnly into the sunset, he didn't known Stoick all that well, but nobody likes to see people die.
Except, perhaps, Drago Bludvist.
I hated that man, everything was his fault. With his desire for control and power, and his stupid revenge plot. If he hadn't been a complete lunatic, none of that would have ever happened. And the fact that he was somehow involved in the disappearance of my foster parents, turned that hate into rage.
He had to pay for what he had done.
"A friend" Astrid and Valka had saddened faces, but managed to get a hold of themselves. I looked back ahead, just in time to see Hiccup igniting his arrow in flames with the help of the burnt wood beside him. He pulled it back and aimed towards the ship, I noticed he hesitated a moment, before releasing the string. The arrow flew the distance between the ship and us, before landing on the boat and setting it on fire. That was our signal; we all aimed the arrows towards the boat, and shot them simultaneously. They all landed scattered on the deck.
"I'm sorry, dad" said Hiccup quietly after some minutes in silence "I'm not the chief that...You wanted me to be. And I'm not the peacekeeper I thought I was" I stared at him sadly, there were a million things I could have said to prove that it wasn't at all true, but I stayed in silence. It wasn't the right time "I...Don't know..." he didn't know what else to say. Luckily, his mother ran a hand through his hair lovingly and began speaking for him.
"You came early into this world" she started quietly "You were such a wee thing. Oh, so frail, so fragile" Hiccup had once told me that he had been born prematurely. Still, in my opinion, he had become so strong even if there was that tiny detail "I feared you wouldn't make it" she placed a hand on his shoulder "But your father... He never doubted" there I had some more proof that what I thought about Stoick was completely wrong "He always said you'd become the strongest of them all" I smiled through my tears, that I had somehow managed to hold back "And he was right" of course he was. Valka placed a hand on his cheek "You have the heart of a chief, and the soul of a dragon. Only you can bring our worlds together. That...Is who you are, son" now some tears did fall from my eyes.
He wasn't just a dragon, he was a leader. He is a leader for both, dragons and humans. He managed to put an end to a war that lasted for more than 300 years, he alone. Stoick had said that he had changed Berk for the better. Only him, he was going to be a great ruler. My friend nodded slightly at his mother's words and stepped forward, staring at his dad's ship for quite some minutes, before beginning to speak again.
"I...Uh...I was so afraid of becoming my dad. Mostly because I thought I never could" so that was why he didn't want to become chief, he thought he wasn't good enough for the job "How-how do you become someone... that great, that...Brave, that... Selfless?" I wanted to say 'You already have', but I couldn't bring myself to do it, not in that situation. Maybe I could say it to him later, once all of that had finished "I guess you can only try" he finished, and we stayed silent for some more minutes "A chief protects his own" he added, turning back towards us. I knew where that was going, and I really liked it "We're going back" I smiled at his words when he confirmed my suspicion.
"Uh...With what?" asked Tuffnut at my side.
"He took all the dragons" replied her twin, but it wasn't true. He hadn't taken all of them, the babies were still there, they didn't listen to anyone, so they didn't fell under the alpha's control.
"Not all of them" smiled Hiccup. Gods, it was good to see that beautiful smile again.
"WOHOO!" I yelled as the baby dragon I was riding went through a hole in an ice column, the rest following behind. Though the babies were utterly impossible to control, it was kind of fun.
"I don't wanna die!" yelled Fishlegs while shaking wildly on the dragon's back.
"We can't fly these things!" screamed Tuffnut while arranging his helmet, which almost fell down due to the baby's flying.
"Yeah, no kidding!" agreed the biggest rider.
"But won't that Bewilderbeast just take control of these guys, too?" asked Astrid. My dragon rose up to the ice ceiling, and I had to duck so as not to hit my head.
"They are babies! They don't listen to anyone!" laughed Hiccup, after chuckling when he saw my attempt at not getting a concussion. I think we were all enjoying the flight for the most part.
"Yeah. Just like us" said Tuffnut, making me smile. That was so true.
I then heard a scream, and turned around just in time to see Fishlegs being tossed off his dragon, but he quickly hanged onto his neck for support. Then, Gobber got hit against an ice rock.
Well, most of us were enjoying it, at least.
"This is very dangerous!" he yelled when he managed to positioned himself next to Hiccup and I.
"Really? I thought we were having a great time!" I replied happily, ignoring all the sounds of my friends crashing against the ice.
"Some might suggest this is poorly conceived!" added the blacksmith.
"Well, it's a good thing that I never listen" said my friend, before we got separated from Gobber because of an ice wall.
"So..." he said. We could hear him through the cracks in the wall "What is your-" another ice wall got in our way "Plan?"
"Get Toothless back and kick Drago's-"another wall prevented Gobber from hearing, but it didn't stop me. I smirked.
"What?"
"I didn't know you had it in you" I said jokingly.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I chuckled but didn't answer; instead, I did my best to lower the dragon's speed and position myself besides Astrid.
"So, when are you planning on telling him?" she asked when she saw me.
"Tell him what?" I asked innocently, but knew exactly what she was talking about. She gave me an amused look.
"C'mon, Lexi, you'll have to tell him sooner or later" she said, ignoring my obviously fake ignorance.
"I prefer later, like three weeks later" I replied. I didn't know if I was ready, what would I say? What would I do? I had to plan my movements in advanced before doing anything, because if I said just one thing wrong, my chances would be blown away, and I didn't want to take that risk.
"Lexi..." she said in a scolding tone.
"Astrid, he's just lost one of his parents and found another one, now it's not the right time"
"When it comes to love, it's never the right time. You are never ready, but if you don't say something soon, you might lose him" I sighed and looked ahead, towards Hiccup. Astrid was right; I could lose him if I didn't act soon.
"You know what? You are right" I agreed looking back at my friend, who smiled excitedly "Once all of this is over, I will tell him" she raised an eyebrow, not really trusting my word "I promise, and you know I always keep my promises" she nodded and I smiled at her.
"Heads up!" yelled Gobber from ahead, as we all turned to look at the front.
"And...That thing" mumbled Hiccup. A giant ice block was covering our path, and it had only two stretch openings. We all went through one of the holes, all but Gobber. His dragon fell for a second, but then came back up quickly.
My dragon positioned besides Hiccup, thankfully, because I hadn't had the chance to properly talk to him since the funeral, and I really wanted to.
"How ya doing?" I asked softly so I wouldn't startle him, he turned to look at me with a small smile.
"Good, I guess" I nodded, I wasn't expecting much anyways.
"I'm here if you want to talk, Hiccup. You know that"
"I do, thank you 'Lex" I smiled at him, and we stayed silent for some minutes, before he finally spoke again "It-It doesn't have to be right now, right?" I giggled and shook my head at his dorkiness
"Not if you don't want to" he let out a small sigh, which made me giggle even harder "Though I do have something to say" I added, and he looked at me curiously "I know that this is probably the last thing you want to hear right now, so if you don't want me to say, just tell me to stop and I will" he nodded "I just wanted to let you know that...You are going to be a great chief, Hiccup" his dad died, and he was his only son. It was a truth universally acknowledged that he would become chief, even if he didn't want to "You are really similar to your dad in many ways, starting with the fact that you are both stubborn and don't follow orders" he chuckled slightly, which made me smile. Then, he looked at me with a gentle face and with his beautiful emerald eyes.
"Thank you, 'Lex. I think you already know this, but I'm glad you are here" I decided to make another joke to light up the mood.
"You should really start to find out other ways to thank me, that's getting kind of old, isn't it?" he chuckled again, and I with him, glad we were able to share those moments despite everything that was going on.
We finally arrived to Berk, but it wasn't the same Berk we had left some hours before. It was completely empty and isolated. It was depressive, honestly. The whole island was covered in ice, and the dragons that had once belonged to us, were now flying above the Bewilderbeast's head.
"No" I muttered, not believing my eyes.
"He took all the dragons" exclaimed Fishlegs. Hiccup glanced at Berk a little bit more, before turning towards us.
"Distract the alpha! Try to keep his focus off of Toothless!"
"Uh, how?" asked Tuffnut, and I looked at Hiccup expectantly, but the idiot spoke instead.
"Have you forgotten who you are riding with?" he said "There isn't a dragon alive that I can't wrangle!" I rolled my eyes at his comment while he petted his dragon, which fell down, making me laugh "Except for this one...!" we heard him yell below us.
"Amateur" said Snotlout and for once, I had to agree with him. Hiccup went flying towards Toothless, who had Drago on top of him, watching the destruction he had caused, while we rushed to a catapult.
Our idea of 'Distracting him' was to throw sheep towards him, while Fishlegs blew a horn everytime he roared, but something is something, right? And besides, we didn't have anything better to work with.
"Keep 'em coming!" said Ruffnut, as we threw one sheep after another.
"Black sheep, baby!" said Snotlout as he threw it to the twins that were operating the catapult. The dragon roared, but the horn was heard at the same time. The Bewilderbeast glanced at it, before turning back towards us.
The black sheep landed on its forehead, bounced a few times, and ended up holding onto the alpha's spikes above his mouth before falling down.
"10 points!" yelled Snotlout as Eret caught the 'distraction'.
The Bewilderbeast then roared again, and the horn was blown along with it. Fishlegs peeked from one side, but the beast saw him and blasted water, that instantly turned into ice, on his direction.
"I'm okay!" yelled Fishlegs, so we wouldn't freak out. We had ran out of sheep, and, even if we still had some, the Bewilderbeast would have frozen us all with its breath if we kept launching them, so that wasn't a choice anymore. We had to wait and see how things would go, but the most worried out of all of us was me.
My gaze never left Hiccup as he approached Drago in the air. The lunatic said something, and the Bewilderbeast positioned himself between Hiccup and Toothless, but keeping its distance. I put my thumbnail between my teeth nervously as I saw that.
Hiccup started to stick his hand out towards Toothless while approaching him slowly, but Toothless didn't move. After some seconds, the Night Fury shook his head and closed his eyes, like trying to get rid of something, but soon opened them back. They were still the same. He repeated the process again and growled. This time, his eyes seemed to return to normal, but it was just for a split second.
Hiccup finally managed to place his hand on the dragon's snout and his eyes weren't dilated anymore. I smiled with hope, but still didn't say anything. I wasn't sure if it had completely worked or not. Toothless purred, but the Bewilderbeast took control of him again, though it didn't last. The Night Fury managed to completely get rid of the alpha's control, and smiled a toothless smile.
"Attaboy! That's it!" yelled Hiccup, and I finally smiled and looked back at the riders, who were also smiling. Then, I turned back ahead, but something caught my attention.
In the distance, I could make up a silhouette, a dragon's silhouette. I got closer, and realized that that dragon was Thunderlight. I opened my eyes wide.
He was alone, completely alone; no one was on top of him, or besides him. No one. Maybe I could try to get him back as Hiccup had done.
3rd person POV
Lexi started to run towards Thunderlight, not really paying attention in case someone could attack her from behind and, of course, not paying attention to the giant beast that saw her approaching the Windstriker.
Fishlegs did, though. He saw the giant beast turning to look at Lexi running towards her dragon, and opening his mouth, ready to freeze the girl. The young man only had time to scream:
"Lexi, don't!" before the alpha blasted all the water towards her, whose scream was the last thing they all heard, before it turned instantly into ice, trapping her inside of it.
