Chapter 14

I had been cleaning my house for three hours and I had no idea why to be honest, but what else could I do? I was bored. Thunderlight was hanging out with the other dragons, and I didn't want to interrupt that. He had never seen another dragon in years, so I couldn't blame him for being excited when he arrived to an island in which more than a half of his inhabitants were dragons.

I had no idea where Hiccup was, probably exploring some more territories. He loved to discover new things, and I didn't go with him unless he invited me because it felt as if I was invading his personal space. Not that it bothered me, anyway; that was probably what he had been doing all the time when I was away. And all by himself. Old habits die hard, I know.

Anyway, I had just finished cleaning the living room floor when the door suddenly slammed open. Those were my friends, I would recognize that action anywhere.

"Hey, guys!" I greeted cheerfully, turning to face them.

"Woah, this place looks amazing, what did you do?" asked Astrid looking around. One could even see their reflection on the windows and vases.

"Nothing, just cleaning a little bit. You know, to kill time" I said approaching them, but my gaze immediately went over to Ruffnut, who was about to grab one of the vases in the entrance that was resting on a pedestal "Be careful with the-!" I was cut off by the sound of ceramic falling to the floor and breaking down into tiny little pieces "Never mind" I turned to look back at Astrid "Anyway, what are you doing here?" I said, sitting down on one of the chairs, and motioning for them to do the same.

"We were just wondering, have you ever heard of Dragon Racing?" asked Astrid, once she had sat down. I shook my head.

"Uhm...No?" I replied "Should I have?" Fishlegs then smiled widely, he seemed excited.

"Of course! It's this awesome competition we have here, which consists in riding our dragons through Berk and grabbing sheep scattered throughout the land to earn points"

"That sounds pretty cool" I said smiling.

"Would you like to try it out?" I nodded eagerly.

"Sure!" I replied, leaning forward "Just tell me the rules" and they began to explain to me how  Dragon Racing was done, and excitement grew within me every minute.

Based on what they told me, there were few rules:

You had to grab as many sheep as you can and toss them in your team's basket. Each white sheep was one point, but then there was the black ship which was ten points. A horn was blown when it was about to be launched. The game was played in teams. You must have face paint, and your dragon must have it too. The team with most points wins.

"The next race starts in twenty five minutes" said Astrid and then looked at me "Are you in?" did she even have to ask that? Of course I was in!

"Obviously!" I said with a smirk.

"Great!" she said excited "We just have to pick the teams!"

"But it will be kinda unfair..." stated Fishlegs, making us look at him confused.

"Why?" questioned Ruffnut.

"Well, one team will have more members than the other..." he started to say, but Snotlout  cut him off.

"Well, I guess then that the team with three members will have to make the most of their effort" he said smirking, and everyone else agreed. He then looked at me, his eyebrow raised. Again.

"What do you say? Team up with me?" really? Did I speak Chinese or something? I thought I had made myself clear.

"Not interested" I said, highlighting every word. Tuffnut then took a step closer.

"How about with me, then?" I was about to say something else, but Astrid pushed him to the floor.

"When are you going to get it in your heads?" she said to both of them "She's not interested" I gave Astrid a grateful smile and she smiled back "And besides, Hiccup will want her on our team" I then rolled my eyes, tired of her constant mocking. Did she really have to bring Hiccup out every time I rejected the boys?

She giggled upon seeing my expression.

"We don't know that" said Snotlout from the floor.

"Oh, indeed we do" said Hiccup from the door, makings us all turned to look at him. He had finally returned from...Whatever it was that he had been doing.

"Hey! How long have you been there?" asked Astrid.

"About enough" he replied. What did that mean? It was really confusing when people said that, because their answer was not clear. Had they been there since the beginning? Did they arrive  in the middle or in the end? And why was I asking so many questions all of a sudden? "So, Lex..." he turned to look at me, and I smiled hearing my old nickname "Wanna be on our team?" I immediately nodded.

"I'd love to" I replied, and he smiled. Gods, I loved his smile so much!

What was wrong with me? It was like my feelings for him had been amplified ever since I came back!

"Oh, man, really?" complained Tuffnut.

"She's not into you, move on" said Astrid, making me laugh.

"Let's go and get ready, then. It starts in fifteen minutes" said Hiccup, and I nodded excited.

Painting Thunderlight's face wasn't as hard as I imagined it to be, he agreed immediately much to my surprise, and he looked pretty excited about the race, too.

My face paint consisted on a violet and green pattern surrounding my right eye, and two lines, green and purple, on both my cheeks. Thunderlight's face paint was a green line across his snout, and several green and purple lines surrounding his horns.

We landed at the starting line, as the whole of Berk watched from the stands. I had no idea that the competition was so popular. Hiccup, Astrid and I were team Hicstridxa, and Snotlout, Tuff and Ruff were team Snonuts. Fishlegs decided not to participate so as to make the teams even.

While waiting for the signal to start, I looked over to my friends. Snotlout had drawn on his face yellow and red lines. When he spotted me looking at him, he winked, but I rolled my eyes and focused on Tuff and Ruff.

Both had painted their faces with yellow and light blue paint, and when Tuffnut saw me he kinda threw me a kiss, but I ignored him and looked at Astrid, whose face was painted in orange and light blue, but she was too focused on Gothi, who was the one that had to give the signal, to notice me.

Then, I looked over to Hiccup; he had a simpler pattern. He had two red lines on both his cheeks. He looked at me and smiled, making me smile, too, and then I turned back to the old lady.

She dropped the flag, and we all set off while the people of Berk cheered for us loudly.

At first, things were good. The sheep were all over the island, in the most remote places: I even found one or two in and underground cave. What I didn't realize until Ruffnut and Tuffnut got closer to me, though, was that the people you were racing could steal your sheep. And that was what Ruff did. She pushed me towards a rock wall, and my sheep fell down. She grabbed it, much to Snotlout and Tuff's annoyance, who started yelling all sorts of things to the girl because she had stolen my sheep.

The last three sheep, including the black one, were where the race had started. And Snotlout and Tuffnut were getting annoying by the minute.

"Lexi!" I turned around, and saw Snotlout and Hookfang just behind me. Snotlout was holding one of the white sheep and, out of nowhere, he threw it at me. I ducked and let it hit the floor.

"What are you doing Snotlout?!" I asked irritated.

"Isn't it obvious? I'm helping you win! You should have caught that!" man, he really didn't like to give up.

"We are not even in the same team!" I tried, although I knew it was useless.

"Who cares?"

I was minutes away from snapping.

"Lex, watch out!" I heard Hiccup yelling. I cocked my head to the side and managed to duck, again, before the twins' Zippleback flew over my head.

"What the-" Tuffnut threw me a sheep. I caught it and gave him a questionable glance.

"For you, now you can win" okay, that was it. I had about enough of them. I tossed the sheep to Tuffnut strongly.

"I can win on my own, I don't need your stupid sheep!" I shouted as I rushed down to grab my own animal.

"Yep, she hates you" I heard Ruffnut saying to the boys.

Thor, they were so irritating!

"Hey, you alright?" Hiccup flew next to me on Toothless.

"I swear I will throw them to the Flightmares if they keep acting like that. They look like idiots" Hiccup laughed, and a cheer was heard from the crowd. We turned around and saw Astrid, who had captured one of the white sheep! We cheered along with the crowd and got closer to the stands.

"It's a tie! Time to launch the black sheep!" announced Stoick. Okay, that was it. If we caught it, we would win the race.

I told Thunderlight to have his claws ready, so we could catch the sheep more quickly. The horn was blown, and the black sheep was launched.

"C'mon, bud! Faster!" he boosted his speed and we were about to catch it, but Ruffnut got hang on it first "Seriously?!" I said frustrated. Then both, Hiccup and Astrid, tried to steal it from her but they both ended up on the floor. I looked at them worried from my spot "Are you guys okay?!" I yelled, loudly enough for them to hear me over the crowd's cheers.

"We are fine! Don't worry about us!" yelled Hiccup.

"Get that sheep!" encouraged Astrid, and I nodded. I turned my gaze back to the race, trying to locate the Zippleback. I saw it some meters away from the basket.

"It seems that Snonuts is going to win this race!" not on my watch. There was no way I was losing to them. I rushed forward and above the twins, so I was located right behind them.

"Get a little bit closer, bud" I whispered to my dragon, not wanting to ruin the element of surprise. He growled slightly and approached them, trying not to make noise with his wings. I could see the crowd on the edge of their seats, wondering what my next move would be.

I stood up on Thunderlight's saddle, and took a look at Hiccup and Astrid. Astrid seemed amazed, and Hiccup nodded smiling, encouraging me. I smiled back, and jumped forward.

Suddenly, I was walking on the Zippleback's back without the twins noticing, but they didn't have the sheep anymore; it was in Snotlout's hands now.

That wasn't a problem, though.

"Excuse me" I pushed the twin's heads to their respective sides so I could come through, and then let myself fall. I heard the crowds gasp before landing on Hookfang's back "I'll take this" I said grabbing the black sheep from Snotlout's hands, and letting myself fall again.

That time, I landed on Thunderlight's saddle, much to the crowd's amazement.

"After all" I looked back at Snotlout, who was looking at me in awe "You wanted me to win this, right?" I giggled, before letting the sheep fall on our team's basket.

"Team Hicstridxa wins!" shouted Stoick, and the crowd started to cheer for us. I saw Hiccup and Astrid jumping and screaming of happiness.

That was amazing.

I stayed hovering in the air for some more minutes, cheering with the Vikings before landing beside my best friends.

"That was great!" said Hiccup, making me smile.

"Are you sure you haven't taken part on a Dragon Race before?" asked Astrid smiling too. I shook my head.

"100% sure"

"I call dibs on Lexi every time we play!" stated Astrid, and I laughed gratefully.

"That's okay with me" I agreed.

"Aww, that's not fair!" complained Snotlout.
