Chapter 25

At the very crack of dawn, Ronja was startled awake by a firm nudge against the side of the boat which made it rock to one side.

The rocking motion was followed by a humongous splash as something massive surfaced and hit the water moments later.

''What in the...,?'' Ronja gasped out, wide-eyed as she was drenched completely in cold sea water.

The boat was rocked firmly a second time, and it had Ronja scrambling out from under the boat-seat to see what exactly had appeared from the depths of the ocean.

'' Oh my Thor!'' Ronja breathed out shakily when the boat started to suddenly move on its own accord, carried by the beast that had disturbed her slumber.

Cautiously, Ronja peered over the side of the boat and felt her heartbeat quicken exponentially at the sight of an immense shadow under the surface of the water.

It wasn't a whale that she could see down in the water. It was the size of a whale, a juvenile one perhaps, but it had a head that looked reptilian.

And it had a tail!

''What is this creature? And what is it doing with me?'' Ronja gasped out loud, too stunned to feel more frightened than she had already felt for some time.

She watched it in shock as the massive creature continued to glide gracefully forward underneath the water.

'' Are you a sea monster?'' Ronja spoke out loud, noting the long spikes that were keeping the boat in place on the creature's back.

Ronja gasped when the creature tossed its head violently from side to side as if trying to tell her that the answer was: '' No, I'm not!''

'' Are you a dragon?'' Ronja asked, gripping the gunwale of the boat tightly with her fingertips.

The creature gave a loud rumble, its voice kicking up bubbles that surfaced with somewhat loud gurgling noises.

And they weren't small bubbles! They were absolutely huge!

'' A- are you helping me?'' Ronja then asked hesitantly.

But of course, the creature could only answer with another rumble and the appearance of more bubbles to the surface.

But she was sure that the creature had answered with a: '' Yes!''

'' But why would a dragon want to help me?'' Ronja thought with a frown to her lips.

She couldn't be certain if it really was helping her. Perhaps it was just pulling her along until she was to die from thirst.

***Wpov.***

'' WOW, WHAT WAS THAT CREATURE?'' Fishlegs squealed out, his expression both shocked and elevated at the same time.

'' I don't know, but whatever it was, it was huge,'' Ronja answered, grinning slightly at the pudgy boy's enthusiasm.

'' Maybe it did want to help you out, or perhaps it was curious about you,'' Hiccup said thoughtfully

'' It sure does look like some kind of a water-dragon,'' Astrid murmured.

'' And it sure didn't try to gobble you up in the middle of the night,'' Snotlout sniggered out.

I gave him a playful glare for his words. '' Indeed, but it may have been the same creature making those spooky noises and scaring the wits out if me.''

Hours ticked by in nervous anticipation...

Then suddenly, Ronja saw something in the distant horizon that made her sit up straighter.

A dark shape, tiny from where she was, against the gleam of the sun.

Ronja stared off into the distance with rapt attention and nearly jumped out of her skin when the Tidal- class Dragon uttered a strange sound that echoed into the air.

When she looked at the water, she could see it ripple and fluctuate in front of the beast. Was it actually echolocating?

The echolocation, or whatever it was, was repeated several times until Ronja was sure that whatever was seen in the distant horizon was drawn towards them by the constant rippling and fluctuation of the seawater.

Whatever the shape in the distance was, it seemed to now be floating very slowly (though it might've been picking up speed) towards the dinghy Ronja was nervously floating on.

Ronja swallowed hard as the shape of 'the thing' became more obvious to her.

It wasn't one of those rather small Viking ships with only one sail-mast, but a huge one with three masts holding sails. And there was a strange, smaller boat to one side that had the same shape at the front of it as the much larger ship. Perhaps it was there to balance the weight of the boat?!

The size of the ship was formidable and disconcerting to look at as it glided through the gentle sea waves in Ronja's direction.

For a moment Ronja felt her heart seize up when she believed the ship would continue on its headed course and plough over the tiny row-boat she sat on.

The only object between her and the deep sea below.

Ronja stood up fully despite the rocking of the boat and started waving and shouting out as loudly as her parched up throat would allow.

At first, it seemed she hadn't been heard, but then, much to Ronja's relief, there was a reaction from the people in the vessel closest to the ship's bow.

They had seen her and had started shouting out something in agitated tones of voice.

The massive vessel moved off course from its original heading to glide across the water parallel to where Ronja's boat bobbed in the slight surf.

A rumble suddenly sounded in the water and Ronja was reminded of the mysterious creature who had pulled her boat in the path of the Viking ship.

She turned to peer in the water, but the dragon had already disappeared beneath the deep sea. '' You really did help me, in your own way,'' she murmured to the water before turning her attention to the large ship that came ever closer on its parallel course with her own vessel.

Ronja's mind was once more occupied with nervous anticipation, till the much bigger boat dropped its heavy anchor in the sea and halted beside the tiny-row-boat.

A thick rope with a metal hook was thrown...

Swishhh, thunkkk

Ronja bit her lips as the hook struck the floor of her boat and the men on board began to pull the rope taught. The hook scraped against the wood before getting secured between the edge of the boat seat.

The men checked that it was fully secured before beginning to winch Ronja's boat closer to the side of their humongous ship.

Ronja, who had sat down on her seat at some point, stood up again as the side of the large vessel was within touching distance.

As soon as a rope ladder was dropped, she grabbed hold of it and began to climb the slightly swaying ladder.

Ronja's forehead was furrowed and she was biting her lower lip nervously.

She didn't know these people at all, and she could very well end up anywhere in this world from this moment on.

As a resident, or as in a more believable case, a slave to these people.

But what alternative choice did she have? Jump back in the boat to wait for Odin to take her back to where she had come from?

Perhaps not so very likely a case if Odin had gone through all the trouble of tracking her down and branding her with a tattoo before transporting her to this world in the first place.

She would probably have died of thirst long before Odin realized she was dying.

And who was to say that the people on this ship would just leave her bobbing in the vessel and move on their way?

No, they would likely force her on board and imprison her.

'' Well, I do hope they will at least have mercy on a girl in desperate need of water,'' Ronja rasped out under her breath.

She kept on climbing until she reached the very top where one of the ship-crew helped her over the gunwale and sat her down on her feet.

Ronja stiffened and looked up at her helper when she heard him say:'' Well, well, well, you are still a child! How did you get yourself in such unlucky situation as this?''

To be continued...
