Chapter 24

When I changed a look at those sitting near me I became aware of the expressions of shock and disbelief from all the people and dragons alike.

I grimaced self consciously as the silence dragged on and looked away towards the screen, not wanting to see any possible pitying looks from any of my friends or fellow Berkian villagers.

...

Ronja was awoken by the feeling of lying spread-eagled on top of something uncomfortably solid and unyielding.

She groaned slightly at her position and opened her eyes slowly, to be met with a blue sky, with hardly any clouds.

There was the sound of waves lapping against the side of whatever solid object she was lying on, but it was the smell of salt and the sea that fully awoke the twelve-year-old girl.

She sat upright with a sharp gasp and peered over the side of the object that turned out to be a small row-boat painted a bright orange colour.

'' A BOAT?! OUR OLD ROWBOAT? ''Ronja shrieked in disbelief.

For indeed, it was the same row-boat that had been taken out of commision at her family's summer house when it had acquired a large hole to its side and had begun to leak. (*1)

Ronja could recognise the carvings to the wooden seats (courtesy of Sonja and Ronja as they had practised their wood-carving arts at nine years of age).

The carved oars sat at the bottom of the boat within easy reach, but with the vast open sea surrounding her from all sides and with no land in sight, she was in the deep end.

There wasn't even an islet in sight, and the familiar landmark that was 'Nurkkakivi' (the massive boulder that had stood tall on her right as a marker to where she was) had disappeared entirely.

Moss, plants and all!

'' MITÄ... HEMMETTIÄ TÄMÄ OIKEIN ON (WHAT... IN THE HELL IS THIS)?'' Ronja cried out loud in bewilderment as she swirled her head around in every direction.

But it was altogether futile trying to spot the familiar landmark with her crouched on the bottom of the gently bobbing boat.

Ronja could feel her legs collapse underneath her and she slid to the hard floor of the boat with a stunned expression frozen to her face. Her throat felt extremely tight and her lips quivered as she breathed in and out harshly.

She continued to look around her, trying desperately to understand how she'd managed to find herself in a situation where she had no idea where the familiar surroundings, the ones she'd known from way since early childhood, had disappeared.

Why had Odin brought her to this place?

Something like this just didn't happen to normal people!

It just wasn't POSSIBLE! IT WAS TOO SURREAL!

***Wpov.***

'' Wow, someone's losing it!'' Tuffnut sang out dramatically, and Ruffnut made a funky sort of agreeing to motion with her hands.

'' Ruff! Tuff!'' Hiccup grunted admonishingly from where he sat, putting his hands on his hips and shaking his head.

***MS***

Swallowing hard, Ronja buried her face into her gloved hands, chanting:'' Miksi, miksi, miksi (why, why, why)?''

She tried her best to not panic or burst into sobs of frustration, but it was very difficult not to under the very distressing situation.

Ronja stayed in the position for a long moment until she'd managed to snap herself back into a more aware state of mind.

It was no longer a question of how she got there, it was now a question as to what she would have to do next that would turn the tables in her favour. She couldn't just stay in this one place forever.

She needed to find a settlement and then figure out what 'in Hellheim' she should go for from there.

Cursing at the fact that her day had started off so great before turning foul, Ronja shoved her mushroom-brush and closed pocket-knife inside her jacket- pocket before taking hold of the oars on the bottom of the boat.

Ronja glowered witheringly at the moving water around her as she attached the oars to the side of the boat.

She tried to determine which way she should take, but it wasn't easy to make a decision.

Whichever way she was to choose, it would still lead her somewhere unknown. And she had no idea if the other way just leads her further away from civilization.

If only there had been people crossing the same ocean area at that time.

'' HAH! Koita nyt tehdä oikea päätös tässä tilanteessa (HAH, you try making a right decision in this situation)!'' Ronja cried out loud in frustration.

She began angrily rowing in one direction, the mushroom-basket on the floor of the boat sliding from one end to the other in tandem with her brisk pace.

''HIENOA! Todella vittumaisen hienoa! (GREAT! Just 'damn' great!)! '' Ronja snarled into the wind out of sheer rage for the vexing situation she had to handle the best way possible.

***Wpov.***

''LOSING IT!'' Ruffnut and Tuffnut sang out as one.

'' Ruff, Tuff!'' Hiccup sighed out.

'' Normally I wouldn't be happy about you cursing, but in this instance it's understandable. You poor thing, you must have been so upset,'' my dad exclaimed with a sad smile to his lips.

***MS**

'' Is Odin trying to kill me? I won't last three days with this sun beating down on me!''

Indeed, the sun was beating down rather relentlessly, and there already were sunburns on Ronja's face from the exposure to the elements while she had been unconscious.

She had no water in her water bottle, which made the already awful situation even more critical and grating to Ronja's nerves.

And it showed as she continued muttering curses in her father's native tongue; it added more punch to how she felt about being thrust in a situation where she had no idea whether she'd find somewhere to stay the night.

And to add more punch to her misery was her upper arm which was still aching and burning like crazy from whatever Odin had done with her magic.

Ronja had no travel equipment except for the small red Fjallraven- backpack, the clothes she was wearing, a ''puukko'' (that was one of her most prized possessions), empty water-bottle and the mushroom-brush attached to a pocket knife.

And the basket of mushrooms.

'' Hemmetin hemmetti!''' Ronja cursed and kicked the side of the boat in a fit of rage, then kicked it again for good measure.

Yep, she was definitely in a very foul mood!

And Ronja was sure her mood would only get worse as hours passed if she didn't find any form of a landmark before nightfall. She desperately needed water. There was food, but if there was no drinkable water source to be found somewhere before dark, at least she knew these mushrooms weren't poisonous and she would be able to eat the mushrooms raw.

She winced in sudden pain as her upper arm gave a sharp twinge.

...

Later, in the middle of the open ocean...

''Great Gods, I'm so weak,'' Ronja sighed wearily and slid down onto the floor of the boat to lean against the wooden seat as exhaustion ran through her.

'' If this isn't a dream, then things could get very, very bad for my health. And because ''Corner rock' is nowhere to be seen this had to be REAL!''Ronja groaned lowly and buried her face in her hair, her gloved hands gripping her strawberry-blond locks tightly in distress.

'' WHY in Helheim was I brought here?'' Ronja moaned out, ceasing the gripping of her hair.

Instead, she flung her hands in the air and waved them around in agitation before calming down somewhat.

'' If I do manage to find a landmark and a civilization in the 'Great Beyond'... Mysterious beyond... oh, whatever...I'll have to think about actually venturing into the settlement to seek help in my plight. But how in Helheim could anyone offer me help in getting back home, except for the obvious solution which is the culprit in bringing me to this wo... wait, did I actually mention 'Great Beyond'? And 'Mysterious Beyond'? From the 'Land Before Time' movies? HA HA HA!''

If anyone had seen her now they would have thought Ronja had lost her sanity completely when she succumbed to hysterical laughter whilst leaning against the side of the seat.

Laughing over something another couldn't understand was a sure sign of someone on the verge of losing it.

***Wpov.***

'' WERE SEEING YOU NOW!''

'' YEAH, LOSING IT!''

'' RUFFNUT! TUFFNUT! SHUT IT'' Stoick bellowed at the twins, looking incredibly vexed.

'' Well I have to admit that wasn't my most sensible moment,'' I thought with an embarrassed blush to my cheeks.

***MS***

It really shouldn't have been so funny, but what Ronja felt was fear, confusion and exhaustion all at once.

Then finally, the tears came, and she pushed away from the seat and dropped onto her stomach. Ronja cried quietly, her forehead touching the wood.

Then she began to feel slightly sick all of a sudden. And dizzy!

Ronja fought back a sudden retch and coughed, clawing at the floor of the boat with her fingertips as she tried to think of some sort of plan.

'' Seriously, you need to stop crying! It's not helping one bit,'' Ronja hissed to herself as she ran a hand across her face.

After rowing for hours (and going through the ordeal that had occurred at her grandparents' house, and then the woods) she had no want to fight the sensation of her eyes wanting to force themselves closed.

No matter how desperate her current situation.

Soon, Ronja was in a very deep sleep that she failed to wake up from for several hours until the glare of the sun irritated her skin and eyes enough to wake her up.

...

Hours ticked by...

As she kept rowing the boat forward, Ronja's eyes wandered from side to side every now and again to peer out at the open sea.

She hoped to see some sort of man-made vessel bobbing in the horizon, but it was disappointment after disappointment.

There was no ship anywhere nearby.

'' God or not, I'll attempt to strangle Odin with his own beard the next time I meet him face to face,'' Ronja clenched out between dry, chapped up lips and dry throat as she tried to hide from the sun by crawling into a ball under the boat's seat.

But it was hardly a shade against the sun.

Ronja's eyelids felt swollen, and the skin that had been sunburnt had begun to shed skin.

***Wpov.***

'' You poor girl,'' my father murmured sadly, stroking my wrist in an act to comfort me.

I leaned my back against his chest with a sigh, welcoming his contact.'' I had no idea I looked so rough,'' I murmured to him as he rested his chin on top my head.

***MS***

The coming of night hardly brought any comfort to the girl's desperate situation.

Once the sun had sunk behind the horizon, it had left Ronja sitting in darkness so impenetrable that she could hardly see her palms in front of her.

And what made the situation more frightening was the sound of waves lapping against the sides of the boat, mixed with the spooky, echo sounds of animals in the water.

They sounded like whales, but the pitch seemed slightly different.

'' Well that's all I need, a Tidal Class dragon or a damn sea monster appear out of the darkness to get me and gobble me up as lunch, '' Ronja muttered out loud, teeth chattering out of fear just as much as the cold that had come at sundown.

She was curled up under the seat of the boat trying to keep warm, and hidden from view in case there really were dragons or sea-monsters somewhere out there in the darkness.

Whales didn't scare her.

'' I hate this! I know that once the sun rises I will suffer from heat, but at this moment I do wish for the night to pass quickly, '' Ronja muttered just as another, truly frightening call ripped the darkness.

And this time Ronja was sure it had sounded much, much closer to the boat than it had before.

'' Oh, my Gods!'' Ronja whimpered out loud and pulled herself into a tighter ball.

She closed her eyes tightly and shivered with the cold and fearful anticipation that she might feel the sensation of sharp teeth bite into her at any given second.

But at some point in the night, she did slip into a cocoon of uneasy slumber that she didn't awake from until early the next morning.
