Chapter 12

The screen came back to life, showing a scenery of a beginning winter.

The ground had begun to show signs of a freeze; the frost and ice glimmered on the ground, and the branches of trees and as everywhere else it could find a surface to stick.

This, of course, made the ground treacherous and a potential hazard zone for the two girls who still rode their bikes to school, and back home at the end of the day.

...

Ronja slipped out the door wearing a long-sleeved sports-shirt, coat and sweatpants and practically skipped towards the shed where she swiftly mounted her bike outside; unaware that she was being watched from the upstairs window.

Her sister, who was wearing a simple red T-shirt over a white long sleeved shirt, and blue jeans, was watching her from their bedroom window.

Her blue-green eyes held a sad look as she watched her sister leave the driveway.

Ronja had scarcely stopped to inform her sister where she was going before scarpering out the door of the house.

Her sister had not asked Sonja to join her on the excursion to the woods. But what else could Sonja have expected from her older sister, when leaving her behind had been something she had quite expected of her older sister at these present times?

And now that Ronja had been given leave to go out after being grounded by their parents (due to her attitude over the months) she hadn't wasted any time in leaving.

Sighing, the younger twin turned away from the window and started walking around the room, holding a school- book in her hand.

She wanted her sister back! She really did want things to be as they were months ago!

But she also had no want to 'push' her sister lest it was to make Ronja even more reclusive.

...

'' Why, why didn't I make an effort to patch things up with her months earlier?'' I thought, choking back a sad noise at the miserable expression on Sonja's face.

'' Gods, was I horrible person!''

...

What Sonja didn't expect to happen, was for the iciness of the ground surface to end up being her brash twin's 'downfall', literally. And that the aftermath would end up sending them on course towards reconciliation.

It was amongst the trail in the woods, on a downhill portion of the trail that the wheels of Ronja's bike lost traction.

The wheels skidded on the icy- surface, causing crunching and grinding noises against tiny pebbles and other ground objects, as the girl found herself in a short but desperate moment of trying to recover from the sudden loss of balance.

But alas...

There must have been but seconds of recovery time and Ronja had been unable to prevent what followed.

'' AHHHHH!''

A startled cry erupted from her lips as she was violently sent flying off the saddle of the bike as it fell over just on top a shallow- hill.

THUDDD

CRACKKKK!

Ronja came into violent contact with solid ground, landing at a wrong angle where her wrist was pinned under her own weight and the force of the impact.

***EMS***

''OHHHH!''

I could hear the heavy, ' vocal wince' from the Vikings as the sound of a bone breaking echoed along the walls of the Movie- theatre.

Whilst I...

'' Oh come on! Why is it always the left arm?!'' I couldn't help but exclaim out loud in exasperation.

'' Be glad it wasn't your SWORD-ARM!'' Spitelout boomed out from the tier behind us.

'' Still, it's the exact one that got scarring and burns from the dragon queen, Spitelout!'' I exclaimed, violently throwing both my hands upwards in agitation.

Which turned out to be a pretty bad idea as my still quite fresh injuries promptly made themselves known, again.

'' OW!''

I hunched over slightly and gripped the elbow of the injured arm with the other.

'' Ronja!'' dad exclaimed in worry.

I could feel him stand up quickly and moving out of the chair he had been sitting; before making his way to where I was still practically leaning against Snotlout's chest.

'' Are you alright, Ronja?'' he asked concernedly as he crouched in front of us and lowered a hand on the arm I was gripping.

'' Yeah... I'm fine, dad,'' I breathed out, trying to smile reassuringly when he used the hand to gently massage the arm.

There was still a lingering stinging-pain across the skin.

'' What do you mean you were scarred and burned by a dragon, Ronja?'' Klaus asked, furrowing his brow as he eyed the arm clothed in an undertunic and tunic ( and bandages).

'' Not by of our dragons, dad! A few months ago Hiccup, Astrid and I unexpectedly discovered that there was a Queen Dragon that controlled other dragons, dad. The adults of Berk had sailed to Helheim's Gate to confront the dragons but had unknowingly stepped into the Queen's territory, '' I said softly, with earnestness in my voice.

I hoped that through telling him this, I'd be able to stave off any beginnings of doubt that could have arisen in my father's mind over the safety of me being around Ancalagon and any of the other dragons here and back in 'Midgard'.

'' I took my people to that 'island of death' because I was so lost in my immense anger over the situation that had arisen in the 'Kill-Ring'. I wouldn't hear a word my son had been trying to tell me when I ought to have stopped and listened to his warning,'' Stoick broke into the conversation with an apologetic look in his son's direction.

Hiccup acknowledged his father with a sheepish smile.

'' My friends and I flew out there to rescue our tribesmen. It was there that Ronja got herself injured,'' he resumed where I'd left off in his father's, and my explanation.

'' And, just how big was this queen dragon? Sigrun did tell me of some of the dragon's she remembered reading from the book of dragons, but I cannot imagine what sort of beast lived on 'Helheim's Gate', '' my father asked with a frown.

'' Oh, it was almost as big as the mountain that was its nest,'' I answered, being sarcastically casual.

'' WHAT?! So, on four legs this creature was potentially bigger than the largest of extinct long-necked dinosaurs of our world, the Earth?'' my father exclaimed with widened eyes.

'' With jaws of a predator like the T-Rex! It was able to easily lift and bite through a Viking ship,'' I answered.

'' With jaw-power beyond a T-Rex's, was almost the size of a mountain and could breathe fire,'' dad muttered with a deep frown, listing its attributes by tapping one finger after another with his other hand.

'' And it had a spiked club- like appendices at the end of its tail,'' Hiccup cut in with a small grimace.

'' Add in a lethal tail,'' my dad sighed, tapping another finger.

'' Which knocked Hiccup off of Toothless,'' Snotlout pointed out, gesturing to the Nightfury who uttered a sad croon at the reminder of that day.

'' Which ended with me losing a leg,'' Hiccup finished, throwing his male-cousin a slightly huffy glance even as he lifted his stumped leg in clear view of his newfound 'uncle'.

'' And that spiked club- like tail was also what grazed my arm, dad,'' I added with a sigh.

'' Good Gods! Now there is 'dragons the size of mountains' to think about! I bet I'll be sitting at the edge of my seat, with my heart in my mouth for a massive portion of our time here. Oh, I'm so gonna love hearing and seeing how much trouble you had all gotten into before the war against the dragons was concluded!'' my dad exclaimed in a sarcastic tone of voice as he threw his own hands up in the air.

My friends and the adults (who had been listening) couldn't help but laugh slightly at my father's dad's dramatic reaction.

Even I couldn't help but chuckle slightly as my dad hugged me briefly before walking back to his seat, muttering something quietly under his breath.

CRACK! SNAPPP!

Our attention was drawn back to the screen at the rewind of my wrist snapping under my own weight and the force in which I'd struck the ground.

***MS***

The force of the tumble sent the young twelve-year-old girl rolling downhill until her back struck a moss-covered boulder and her descent was halted.

Thankfully she had been wearing a helmet (like she had always done under the prompting of her parents).

...

'' AHHH!''

At that same moment, back at the family home, Sonja gasped and dropped the school- book she had been reading while pacing the length of the bedroom.

Sonja stumbled shakily over to the nearest bed (that just happened to be her sister's bed)  She felt like some invisible being had come out of nowhere to punch all the air from her lungs.

For a moment she just sat there, breathing in and out shakily until she yelped and cradled her left wrist to her chest.

Her senses had been abruptly assaulted by a sharp pain that should not have been there, but was, as well as a dull ache to her back.

'' R-Ronja?! '' she murmured worriedly, as she finally got to her feet and walked towards the book she had suddenly dropped.

She stooped to retrieve it before straightening her back.

'' Something must have happened to my sister,'' she thought grimly, quickly throwing the book on top her bed before dashing across the floor towards the door leading to the hallway and the stairs.

''MOM!'' she cried out, thundering down the stairs and to the living- room where she found her mother sat on the sofa, reading one of her books.

Sigrun straightened her back immediately when the sound of her daughter's noticeably panicked voice reached her ears.

'' Sonja, what is wrong? You look so pale!'' Sigrun exclaimed worriedly, setting the book down on the sofa as her daughter threw herself down beside her and leaned against her side.

'' I- I think Ronja's hurt herself,'' Sonja whispered, trembling slightly as her mother hugged her.

Stryka gasped quietly before asking,'' Is she hurt badly, Sonja?''

'' I- I think it's her wrist and she might've hit her back against something, too! I don't know exactly where she went, mom! All I know is that she took the wood -path from the junction that spreads in two directions,'' Sonja answered, grimacing as she rubbed her left wrist with her right hand.

'' You think she can walk, or is she too hurt to move?''

'' She was wearing her helmet, and her head wasn't hit; otherwise, I would likely have felt something,'' Sonja said shakily as her mother hugged her tighter.

'' If I know Ronja, she will not just stay where she is if her legs or head aren't injured. She would attempt to make for the junction you mentioned.''

Sonja nodded in an answer as her mother lifted her in her arms as she stood up, before setting her down on her feet. But she couldn't shake away the worry for her sister's health.

The two family members hurried to the vestibule to put on their boots and coats. Sigrun grabbed her purse, car-key and house-key from atop the small table beside the coat- rack as the two practically ran towards the grey Opel- car waiting by the driveway.

...

'' She really did sense my physical pain,'' I thought, wide-eyed as I shared a quick, knowing look with Ruffnut and Tuffnut who had been uncharacteristically quiet for a long time, now.

...

As for the hapless twelve-year-old, she hadn't hit her head or injured her spine.

But the impact with the ground had knocked the breath out of her lungs had left her paralyzed for a long moment.

Ronja gasped when the pain finally kicked in and curled herself against the surface of the boulder. Her breath was catching in her throat and tears glistened in the corners of her eyes as she moved her other hand to cradle her left wrist.

But after a moment of recovering her equilibrium, Ronja managed to force herself into a sitting position and wipe away the tears tickling her eyelashes.

'' Owww! Surely I have broken a bone,'' she muttered to herself, wincing at the discomfort

Ronja peered around her vicinity and spotted a deep puddle nearby. She crawled over to it and grabbed a heavy stone with her uninjured hand.

With a slight groan of pain, she pounded the stone hard against the ice over the puddle. The surface shattered, and Ronja shoved her wrist into the water, hissing through her teeth at the cold sensation.

But it worked to numb the agony that radiated from her broken limb and still the swelling building up in the damaged wrist. Ronja then quickly used her free hand to move the scarf on her neck so that the two connecting ends of the scarf were hanging down her torso and were in a position she could easily tie them together.

Sighing quietly, Ronja then pulled the wrist, that had been sufficiently numbed, away from the cold liquid and somehow managed to tie off the ends of the scarf into a sling around the broken limb.

...

'' That must have been painful,'' Snotlout murmured into my ear.

'' Yeah, well the cold did help a bit. And thankfully mum taught me to tie the scarf with one hand,'' I murmured very quietly, but I could hear Snotlout give a slight sound that told her had been listening.

...

Ronja then stumbled to her feet, glancing at her downed bike before using her foot to forcefully push it to the side of the road, and into some thick bushes, before starting the long trek back to the road junction.

...

'' Well, you were certainly tenacious in getting out of there,'' Astrid spoke up.

Her words made me briefly glance at her from the corner of my eye.

...

When the youngster, at last, dragged herself all the way back frown the forest path and to the road-junction, she paused abruptly; becoming off guard by the familiar grey car parked along the side of the road junction.

And there was her mother, and her little sister waiting for her!

Uttering a slight whimper of relief at seeing the familiar faces, Ronja got moving just as her mother started running over to her.

The tall woman met her daughter halfway to the car and easily lifted her stumbling little girl up into her arms. The older twin immediately snuggled her head against her mother's neck, breath hitching from noticeable discomfort.

A few moments later, Ronja slowly lifted her head up to peer down at her sister who was approaching them at a slower pace.

'' You felt...?'' Ronja began to ask, and Sonja nodded her head before her older sister could even finish the question.

'' Thanks so much for telling mom, Sonja, '' Ronja said quietly, smiling brightly at her younger Twin. Her smile was the most sincere it had been in a very long time.

But her expression quickly fell when Sonja just looked up at with an unreadable expression.

'' Listen, Sonja, I've been treating you horribly all these weeks. I- I know this comes so suddenly and probably with no true baseline as to why I want to change after everything I've done. Especially... especially when I left the house earlier without any notion I was going to be good to you once I'd returned home. B- but I would like to be your sister again if you'll let me,'' Ronja stammered apologetically.

She shifted slightly in her mother's arms so she could see her sister better, and managed to jostle her broken wrist.

'' Ow, ow, ow!'' she thought as she quickly hid a wince from her mother

But she couldn't hide the pain, that lanced across the damaged bone, from her little sister.

Sonja shuddered, gripping at her own wrist before suddenly lunging forward to hug her sister's legs; it was the only place she could reach with her mother being so tall.

''I- I'm f- fine, sis,'' Ronja stammered quietly, biting her lower lip when she saw the worried look return to the other's face. She leaned down to grasp one of Sonja's hands in a comforting squeeze.

Sonja smirked up at her sister, the worried look ebbing away as a slightly colder look slid into place in the younger twin's eyes.

'' Of course, you are, Ronja,'' she answered with a sarcastic undertone of voice.

Ronja kept her own eyes fixed on Sonja's more greenish tinted eyes as she started to slowly pull her own hand away. A small, defeated sigh escaped her lips at the thought that the other might not want her apology at all.

The older twin then almost jumped out of her skin when Sonja abruptly reached up to grip her hand.

'' You'll have to earn forgiveness, sis, but it's nothing too radical. All I want to see from you is that you continue earning those improved school reports. But most of all, I want you to be present for me, Ronja. No more of this 'evading and pushing me away' like you have done these past weeks.''

Ronja gave her sister a solemn, hesitant smile as she said,'' Yeah, I can live with striving to earn your forgiveness, sis. I promise I'll do better, and... and I really am sorry for everything.''

Sonja kept eye-contact as she nodded silently. She then slowly let go to allow their mother (who was smiling warmly at the pair of them despite the worry in her eyes) to start carrying her twin towards the parked car.

But a genuine smile grazed the younger twins lips as she quickly followed at her mother's heels.

***EMS***

'' TWIN INTUITION!'' The Thorston twins exclaimed as one the second that scene ended.

They had been surprisingly holding their tongues for several moments through the entire scene.

In fact, I had been watching the reactions of others more than the film itself, and I'd seen the two siblings watching everything with baited breath.

'' What is 'Twin Intuition', anyway? You mentioned it back on Berk, as well. And how was it even possible that Sonja could feel that something had happened to her sister?'' Snotlout asked incredulously, glancing at me briefly.

Ruffnut scoffed and said,'' You just answered your own question, 'Lout'! Even Tuff and I get those feelings sometimes because over the years...''

'' You are practically stitched to the other's side and you form a close bond with the other. You might even form your own language and ways to communicate verbally, or with just gestures,'' I commented.

It earnt me an amused laugh from the Thorston twins.

Yeah, I'd practically finished Ruff's sentence just then. The fact that I used to be a Twin myself, made it possible for me to still have these moments where Ruff, Tuff and I were practically on the same mind-page when it came to voicing facts about anything Twin-related.

'' Oh my Thor! If your future children end up being twins, remind me to find a way to tell them apart if they turn out to be identical because not being able to tell them apart is a headache I don't want to endure!'' Snotlout groaned, clutching at his hair.

Hiccup and Astrid both burst out laughing at Snotlout's unexpected outburst, along with most of the Vikings in the theatre.

The twins were practically howling, and Fishlegs was chuckling a bit nervously.

'' How about triplets, young Snotlout wasn't it? My generation came to have those in the family line; three boys, by the way, '' my father quipped, rolling his eyes with a small smile to his lips.

''WHAT IN THOR'S NAME!? TRIPLETS?!'' Snotlout shouted, clearly shocked.

I coughed uncomfortably as Snotlout's outburst was immediately followed by his mother's input to the conversation.

'' Triplets in the family you say?! Oh my Thor, Spitelout now we gotta SET our axes on her!''

'' Nice to know I'm considered a virtuous individual to continue a family-line. But on the other hand, this conversation is 'slaying' my dignity as a virgin,' I muttered blandly, shaking my head.

Hiccup, Astrid and the Twins seemed to laugh even harder at the quips in conversation.

'' Oh Thor, Ronja!'' Snotlout chastened loudly, blushing furiously at both his mother's and my, words.

I could hear him grumbling in dissatisfaction.

'' Hold on a moment there, lady! Ronja has only just turned fourteen years old. I'm not letting anyone put a claim on her until she is at least sixteen to seventeen years old,'' Klaus exclaimed all of sudden.

My father's words had the effect of making the room go quiet for just a moment before Spitelout opened his 'big-mouth', again...

'' Then maybe you should take into account that it's the WAY of Vikings to get married at a young age!''

'' Oh I'm aware of that detail!''

'' Then you're better off changing your thinking, or your daughter will end up an old- spinster long past her prime to marry! ''

'' ALL I WANT is for any potential marriage commitments to be of Ronja's own decision! '' my father immediately snapped, looking outraged.

'' SPITELOUT,  SHUT YOUR MOUTH!'' Stoick exclaimed almost at the same moment.

He looked equally as furious as his brother-in-law who,  by now, was noticeably seething in his seat.

And they weren't the only people...

All the women in the theatre, young and old, were looking down at the older Jorgenson with 'looks that could kill'.

Moments past in silence. Then...

''Having said that about the topic of my daughter's courtship-matters, I must ask, is it for sure that Ronja can stay on Berk permanently?'' my father said after finally having calmed down from the outrage brought on by Spitelout's words.

Snotlout and I quickly shared glances, mine one of surprise and his of shock and worry.

My father had hit the mark with that question!

We had no way of knowing where Odin, who had brought us all here, would take my father and I once we had seen the moments of our lives on the Movie- theatre screen.

'' Ronja was suddenly taken from my world to your world. So who is to say she will one day be ripped away from the land of Berk without any warning whatsoever?! We were all brought here without a say in the matter, so it could be that neither my daughter nor I, will have a say in where our lives will go once we have been shown everything.''

A cacophony of shocked exclamations rang around the room at my father's words. Apparently, none had ever ventured into the train of thought that I might not become a permanent resident of Berk.

My father looked from me to my uncle who was listening with rapt attention.

''I wouldn't find it ideal if my daughter were to live in one place, and I somewhere else entirely. I love my daughter unconditionally and I want to be a part of her life now and in the future!''

''Oh, dad,'' I thought inwardly, slowly shifting away from Snotlout.

Snotlout jerked, his larger fingers brushing against my shoulders as if wanting to stop me from going to my father who had gotten out of his seat again and was knelt beside my dragon, petting her on the side of the neck.

If there ever were moments when our dragons understood the talks of humans, then today was the day their senses seemed keener than ever!

Anca had lifted her long neck over my father's shoulders; like she was hugging him. And she stretched to nuzzle my face as I approached and knelt before my father.

I petted Anca briefly before hugging my dad tightly around the waist.

'' I I would have to say goodbye to either you, daddy or the people of Berk; and when the time does come for them it will be a sad, sad day of goodbyes to whichever side it falls on. I- I honestly don't wish to say goodbyes to anyone, but if I must make a choice...''

I gave a sigh before steeling myself to say,'' It's going to be you. I love you, daddy, and... I can't leave you all alone, again. Besides, I'm still very much underage, and you are is still statutorily in charge of me. Therefore, wherever you go, I go too, dad.''

I could see, from the corner of my eye, the slightly horrified glances falling into place on the other teens' faces. Especially Hiccup and Snotlout looked quite broken by my decision.

I patted my dragon's snout when she whined sadly and pushed against my chest.

'' I know, I know girl! It hurts me, too, to leave you, Anca. But I can't take you along with me if I end up going back to my original home. There are no dragons anywhere out there, and you would not be happy.

Anca gave a saddened croon.

'' Besides, if someone discovered you out there, you would be in danger of being hunted and captured. Humans would keep you in a cell and do experiments on you in the name of science! I don't want that kind of fate to fall on you, girl. You will be safer on Berk!''

Anca uttered another sad sound and butted me gently on the chest before lifting her neck off my dad's shoulders when he shifted to get up.

Dad pulled me up from the ground and walked the both of us back to the Cinema- tier. He sunk down onto the cushioned seat and held me against him in a gentle hug as I rested my cheek against his chest like I'd done in the first months following our family's tragedy.

Thump, click! Thump, click!

I turned my head slightly when I heard the sound' of my cousin's footsteps approaching from behind me. A hand was lowered on my shoulder.

Hiccup looked nervous as he stood there, but I could see a question in his emerald eyes.

It was the same sort of silent look that I had often given my father upon asking him to ' will you pick me up''.

As surprising as it was to see it on him, a teenager, I also knew Hiccup and I had often felt like loners on Berk despite having each other to turn to when we were feeling 'down'.

We had more than once found ourselves comforting one another. It had been nothing sensual, even though we had often talked long into the night and fallen asleep beside each other. It had been just two people needing someone there when they were feeling down.

And as it turned out, I wasn't the only person to be able to decipher 'that silent question'. And my father wasn't one to turn down a child's plead to just be held by someone who was a grown-up.

I watched my father slowly reached forward to wrap one arm around Hiccup's waist. And when he didn't protest, dad gently snagged his nephew up by the waist and set the pair of us on each side of his lap.

I couldn't help but smile lightly.

This was the very first time my dad had ever gotten the chance to hold his wife's brother's son. It was endearing, really, when the three of us shared a long- drawn hug; and it was equally as endearing to have seen one's own father so attuned to another child's needs to be held.

And yet it wasn't like Klaus was a stranger to Hiccup (well technically he was as neither had met the other until today). But he was my father and an uncle to Hiccup. An uncle, who must have seemed entirely different from what Hiccup had come to expect from his other uncle, Spitelout.

None of us truly cared about the onlookers possibly reactions, but the moment was finally broken by cheerful music blasting from the speakers of the screen.
