Snoggletog Special

A view of an island village comes into sight from the heavy fog.

This is Berk.

The land seemed much more colder than how it usually was.

Boast in the kind of balmy, fun-in-the-sun climate that will give you frostbite on your spleen.

A home come into a closer view. The cabin like home was frosted over with snow building up on the sides.

The one upside is our annual holiday.

We call it:

Snoggletog.

The view changes into a bedroom where a boy rested in the morning. There was a noise coming from his roof that was directly above his room. He peeked one eye open before squeezing both eyes shut and pulling his covers over his head to try to ignore the noises.

Why we chose such a stupid name continues to remain a mystery, but with the war long over and dragons living among us for three years, this Snoggletog is another memory to remember.

The noises continued (they might even have gotten louder). He decided to give up since it seemed to be the third year he is woken up earlier than usual.

"Alright, alright," the boy mumbled. He threw his legs over his bed. He tightened some of his screws on his prosthetic leg before getting up.

He walked outside with a steady foot with remembrance of a few years back. His attention was set on his roof.

"Are you going to do this every year?" Hiccup asked his beloved dragon sarcastically. He stood with his hands on his hips with an eyebrow raised.

His dragon answered only with a gurgle that sounded like a laugh. Hiccup teased back with the same noise in a mocking matter.

"Good morning, sleepy head," a voice giggled from the side of the house. Hiccup changed his view from his dragon to his best friend. There she was again, smiling as ever.

Hiccup's cheeks grew a healthy pink. Her smile glowed more than it usually does this time of the year. It's because she loves the winter holidays. She loved Snoggletog because she loved to make the people she cares about and those around her happy. Hiccup just wished she could enjoyed it more with her family.

"Oh, hello, [Name]," he cursed to himself for stuttering (he thought he was passed this phase already), "I didn't see you there."

Toothless climbed down from the roof and landed besides [Name], begging for affection. The girl obliged to give a gentle rub to the beast while he purred under her touch. The girl giggled, "You have a habit of spacing out."

Hiccup only chuckled to her sharp comeback. He ever wondered if it was his fault that she has a smart mouth. He watched his two best friends interact as he thought.

Maybe it's time I tell her...

He smiled.

"What are you smiling about?"

His thoughts were interrupted by a voice he's all too familiar with. He blinked a few times. [Name] was staring right at him. His face felt warmer. "Oh, nothing!" He looked away and scratched the back of his neck.

Her head popped into his line of vision. He jumped a little with her sudden appearance. "Come on, tell me!" He saw an evil glint in her eyes.

"It's nothing! I'm serious!"

"Is that why your in a giddy mood?" She started taking slow steps towards him in a playful manner. He didn't answer but backed away. "Tell me or else!" She started chasing him down the hill.

"Ah, no! Wait, what about Toothless?" He tried to excused.

"Oh, good idea!" She snapped her fingers. "Get him, Toothless!" Hiccup eyes widen when he heard his dragon roar. He made a run for it.

"That is not what I meant!"

"Hiccup, your friends need help with the new traditions since you're the only one with Toothless."

Hiccup turned from his work station to see his mentor pointing his thumb over his shoulder to the outside. "Ah, okay, just give me a minute to clean up."

Gobber waved him off and went to his work station to continue finishing a shield. Hiccup started cleaning here and there. He stopped when he saw [Name] holding a tray of good. The tray held flavored bread, muffins, and other sweets but he didn't care for the sweets. He just saw her smile. That's all that mattered to Hiccup.

"Just tell her, laddie."

"Oh, Gobber," Hiccup jumped in surprise, "what are you talking about?" He busied himself with cleaning again, finishing the little he had and to avoid his face from being seen.

Hiccup can just imagined Gobber rolling his eyes. "You know what I'm talking about. Go tell the lassie you like her."

Hiccup sighed, giving up and not even thinking up an excuse. "And get rejected? Yeah, right, no, thanks."

"Now, why would you think a girl like that won't like the Pride of Berk?" Gobber inspected the finished shield and starting on a new one.

"That's the thing. I don't want to her to like me because I'm the 'Pride pf Berk'...just me," Hiccup sighed.

"Hey, guys!" Hiccup jumped and knocked some things off a table when he heard [Name] greet them. He groaned but ignored the mess and cleaned himself. "Would you like some bread? Just freshly made!"

"I would love some!" Gobber moved his finger rhythmically over the tray trying to figure which one he wanted. [Name] waited patiently as he moved to get the blueberry flavored muffin. [Name] motioned for Hiccup to grab something. He took a slice of bread. He stood in place next to her.

"Thanks, [Name]," Hiccup smiled.

"No problem," she smiled back. She went to turn away but stopped before she did. "Oh, Hiccup, Astrid needs help with handing out yaknog. Apparently, she says it's not as popular as it was before. I wonder why."

Hiccup cringed at the awful taste that still rubbed on his tongue from a few years back. [Name] was so lucky she didn't get to taste it. Not that he allowed her to anyway (no matter how much she insist). "Uh, oh yeah, I'll be there."

"I'll be on my way," she waved good-bye.

"[Name], wait!" Gobber called her back.

"What is it, Gobber?" she came back to the same spot.

Gobber approached them two and pointed up. "Mistletoe," he said bluntly.

Hiccup and [Name] looked up to where the plant was hanging from the doorway. They both looked back at each other and blinked many times. Hiccup's face became more red by the second.

All of a sudden, [Name] giggled and pointed at Hiccup.

"You have to kiss Gobber."

When the girl left with a smile on her face, she didn't hear Hiccup blench and covered his face from despair.

There was music and food, dancing and singing, joy and laughter. Hiccup looked around the room seeing everyone so content. The dragons made it back from their annual seasons and to their owners like always. His father wasn't around most likely making sure everyone was happy or making himself happy with a few drinks. Hiccup was with his friends at the moment and he would honestly have enjoyed it more if his best friend was here. He has not seen a single sight of her at all that night. He kept searching the Great Hall for her but she was no where to be seen.

"Hey, have any of you guys seen [Name]?"

Astrid rose a concerning brow. "I saw her earlier when she was helping with the food but haven't since."

"I'm going to look for her. You guys enjoy yourselves." Hiccup put down his cup and left the table. He heard Snotlout start to make a remark but saw Astrid silenced him with an elbow to the rib. Hiccup continued to go outside.

He saw [Name] right away sitting on the stairs, facing away. She was holding a steamy cup of tea. Hiccup knew it was tea because that's all she would drink. He just didn't know what kind of tea it was. "Hey," she turned at his voice, "why are you out here? The celebration is in there."

She sighed, "I know, but it's hard to see all those families so happy. I mean I want them happy, but...you know..."

Hiccup frowned slightly at himself. How could he forget the most troubling holiday for his friend? He didn't even noticed with the smile she plastered on herself all week. He felt terrible for not noticing. He went to sit down next to her and pulled her in for a side hug. Her right ear rested on his chest. He rubbed his hand on her arm in comfort.

"It's been three years, Hiccup. I miss them so much..." He didn't say anything as his best friend's world started raining. He felt his shirt started to get damp but he kept silence letting out [Name]'s heart pour out that she has kept bottled up for a week. He moved the cup from her hands to the side. While in doing so, [Name] wrapped her arms around his torso and buried her face into his shirt. Hiccup only rubbed her back soothingly.

After a while, her cries went silent. Hiccup could still tell the party was lively as ever with cheering and laughter still going on. Hiccup could feel [Name] was getting tired because her breathing has become more even.

Hiccup stared at her peaceful, sleeping face. "You still have a family, [Name]. Just know I'm here for you." He gently kiss her temple and whispered, "Happy Snoggletog, [Name]."

Hiccup eyes widen when he heard her answer back in a mumble. "Happy Snoggletog, Hiccup." She went back to sleep with a smile on her face. Hiccup smiled and whistle over Toothless to take her home.
