6: Walk of Shame, Village Meeting

The torch was heading to where Stoick left his men to keep the Nadders trap but they have to abandon the trap Nadders who had the same idea and fled the area to avoid getting hurt but the escaped Nadders have gathered some sheep in a net with one falling off and started to fly off with their companions back to the raid as the crowd of vikings watched. The raid is over and the dragons have clearly won this one. The crowd murmured between each other as they looked to their chief for his response and they could clearly see that he was not in a very good mood.

Hiccup glanced around to see that all eyes were on him and his father as he glanced at Stoick before pointing in the direction of the forest with a sheepish look.

"Okay, but I hit a Night Fury." He said sheepishly.

Having enough, Stoick grabs Hiccup by the hoodie of his vest and walks away while fuming in embarrassment as the crowd watches from the side. Gobber came as well as he watched the duo with a concerned gaze as Hiccup tried to explain his reason to his father.

"It's not like the last few times, Dad. I mean I really actually hit it. You guys were busy and I had a very clear shot. It went down, just off Raven Point. Let's get a search party out there, before it-" Hiccup rambled on just as Stoick released him and turned to the teen.

"STOP!" He exclaimed in frustration and Hiccup immediately went silent with everyone else as the crowd just watched the chief scold his son.

"Just... stop." Stoick told him after calming down a little but the frustration was clear in his eyes.

"Every time you step outside, disaster follows. Can you not see that I have bigger problems? Winter's almost here and I have an entire village to feed!" Stoick said loudly as Hiccup was still silent.

The teen looked around and noticed that all eyes were upon him so see what his response is.

"Between you and me, the village could do with a little less feeding, don't ya think?" Hiccup joked a little.

The little jab made a few vikings to stir self-consciously and one even put their hand on their stomach with a slightly offended look as if asking the teen silently 'is he calling me fat?' but Stoick wasn't in a very joking mood right now.

"This isn’t a joke, Hiccup!" Stoick scolded him as he sighed in exasperation.

"Why can't you follow the simplest orders?" He questioned him in exasperation as the teen responded.

"I can't stop myself. I see a dragon and I have to just... kill it, you know? It's who I am, Dad." Hiccup said as he tried to explain but Stoick just pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly stressed.

"Odin, you are many things, Hiccup. But a dragon killer is not one of them." Stoick bluntly told him and Hiccup had to hide a flinch from everyone.

Stinging from the inside, Hiccup looks around sadly to see many were agreeing with the chief as the teen looked down to the ground.

"Get back to the house." Stoick told him before he looked over to Gobber.

"Make sure he gets there. I have his mess to clean up." Stoick said as Gobber smacked Hiccup lightly on the head but Hiccup clearly didn't mind it.

Stoick leaves in the opposite direction while Gobber leads Hiccup through the walk of shame as many vikings shook their heads in disappointment in the teen's direction as they went to do repairs on the village. The duo passed by the other teens hanging out at the bottom of the Great Hall who in turn snickered and mocked Hiccup for one of his many screwups.

"Quite the performance." Tuffnut mocked him before Ruffnut shoved him a little.

"I've never seen anyone mess up that badly. That helped!" Snotlout said as he clearly got in his cousin's face to rub more salt into the wound.

"Thank you, thank you. I was trying, so..." Hiccup weakly said as he avoided Astrid's eyes.

Once Hiccup wasn't looking, Gobber sent Snotlout a stern look before shoving the teen to the ground who yelped from surprise as the blacksmith followed Hiccup. Snotlout got back up, laughing, but stopped when Astrid shook her head at him before she left to help with the repairs.

Hiccup and Gobber were walking up the hill towards a house at the top. It was silent as they didn't know what to say. Hiccup decided to break the silence as they neared the house.

"I really did hit one." Hiccup said as Gobber just nodded

"Sure, Hiccup." The blacksmith said but Hiccup rolled his eyes but continued.

"He never listens." He added.

"Well, it runs in the family." Gobber pointed out.

It's true, one thing both Hiccup and Stoick have in common is that they never, ever listen to each other.

"And when he does, it's always with this... disappointed scowl. Like someone skimped on the meat in his sandwich." Hiccup said as they reached the porch of the house before he did his perfect imitation of Stoick.

"Excuse me, barmaid. I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring. I ordered an extra large boy with beefy arms. Extra guts and glory on the side. This, here. This is a talking fishbone." He mimicked his father before his expression fell after but Gobber stopped him before he could continue.

"You're thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like. It's what's inside that he can't stand." Gobber told him but all he got from the teen was a deadpanned and incredulous look. Was that supposed to help him feel better?

"Thank you, for summing that up." He said with his voice dripping heavily in sarcasm and turned towards the door but when he reached for it with his left hand, the sleeve slid down and revealed the mark to Gobber by accident.

"Lad, where did you get that?" The blacksmith inquired curiously and Hiccup panicked and covered the mark with his sleeve.

"I-It's nothing, Gobber, I was just doodling with some ink and it won't come off." The teen said but it was clear that Gobber didn't believe him.

"Don't tell me you got a tattoo." Gobber chided.

"N-No, Gobber! I didn't, I swear. Just... Please don't tell my dad." Hiccup pleaded as he pulled his sleeve to cover it. He needs to seriously get gloves to cover it.

He grabbed the door handle but Gobber stopped him.

"Look, the point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not." He said gently but Hiccup sighed heavily. That's not what he wanted.

"I just want to be one of you guys." He said miserably as he opened the door before entering the house and closed it.

Gobber sighed sympathetically as he eyed the door before heading back down to the village to help with repairs. He couldn't help but pity the teen. Stoick wasn't much of a father though. But he can't blame the two. They're so alike in so many ways and Hiccup took after his mother more.

What he didn't know was that after Hiccup entered the house, the teen went to his room to get his knife and his book. He came downstairs after he made sure Gobber left and went through the back. He stumbled a little on his way out but caught himself before making a beeline for the forest. He doesn't care how long it would take but he will find that dragon. One way or another.

Meanwhile at the Great Hall, a large crowd of vikings talking to each other quietened down as their chief started to speak.

"Either we finish them, or they'll finish us! It's the only way we'll be rid of them! If we find the nest and destroy it, the dragons will leave." Stoick told them before he grabbed a knife.

"They'll find another home!" He said before he sinks his blade into a large map.

The map was spread over the table and his blade pierced a particular part of it. It was the uncharted area where the dragons are as it was painted with clouds shrouding the entire area with sea monsters and dragons. Stoick knew they had to find the island of where the dragons are coming from before winter comes or else they won't have anything to eat for the duration of the winter.

"One more search. Before the ice sets in." He said as he looked at his tribe.

"Those ships never come back." One viking in the crowd said and many agreed. No matter how many times they went to find the nest, they always came back defeated.

"We're Vikings. It's an occupational hazard." Stoick said in a matter-of-fact tone.

"Now who's with me?" He then asked. His eyes roamed around the hall as everyone went silent.

He could clearly see that they didn't want to go as the crowd was shifting restlessly in silence. Heads were being scratched and eyes being averted.

"Today's not good for me." Another in the crowd feebly said.

"I've gotta do my axe returns." Another feeble. But Stoick knows just what to get them to agree.

"Alright. Those who stay will look after Hiccup." He said and hands immediately were up in the air, enthusiastic agreements were heard.

Clearly they didn't wanna stay behind and babysit the runt. So whether it's taking care of Hiccup or going to the nest are their only options.

"To the ships!" Phlegma exclaimed.

"I'm with you, Stoick!" Spitelout agreed and Stoick nodded in satisfaction.

"That's more like it." He said dryly.

Once it was said and done, everyone headed off to pack right after finishing the repairs needed for their village and leaving both Gobber and Stoick alone in the Great Hall. Gobber gulps down the contents of his tankard before he stands up.

"Right. I'll pack my undies." He said as he was about to leave but Stoick stopped his friend.

"No, I need you to stay and train some new recruits." He told him and Gobber sat back down.

"Oh, perfect. And while I'm busy, Hiccup can cover the stall. Molten steel, razor sharp blades, lots of time to himself." Gobber said cheerfully and sarcastically at the same time.

"What could possibly go wrong?" He asked as he drank a bit more of the content in his mug.

Stoick sat down on the bench beside him as he sighed heavily. The only problem is: what was he gonna do with Hiccup if he's not present? The teen could get himself into trouble without him around.

"What am I going to do with him, Gobber?" Stoick asked him.

Gobber paused on his drink and gave his friend a look and Stoick immediately knew what he was gonna say.

"Put him in training with the others." Gobber suggested but Stoick gave him a look.

"No, I'm serious." Stoick shook his head. There's no way he's gonna put Hiccup training with the other teens.

"So am I." Gobber told him seriously. Hiccup can get himself out of trouble whenever he gets stuck in one.

Stoick turned to look at him with a glare. There are so many things that could go wrong and Hiccup will get killed if he ever steps one foot in the arena.

"He'd be killed before you let the first dragon out of its cage." Stoick said as concern and worry were both etched in his voice but Gobber waved him off. There's some stuff that Hiccup can get out of unscath or not. That will prove that the teen is tough.

"Oh, you don't know that." Gobber told him but Stoick wasn't fazed by it.

"I do know that, actually." Stoick said as Gobber shook his head.

"No, you don't."

"No, actually I do." That made Gobber turn towards him.

"No, you don't!" He said in a serious tone.

"Listen! You know what he's like. Especially with these... dreams he claims to have." Stoick said as he stood up. Gobber hummed thoughtfully. Hiccup did mention last week that he has been having strange and weird dreams about giant metal beings.

"The one about giant metal beings, huh?" Gobber said as Stoick sighed.

"You know what I mean. From the time he could crawl he's been… different. He doesn't listen. Has the attention span of a sparrow." Stoick said as Gobber lost his metal tooth in his tankard and he peered inside to look for it.

"I take him fishing and he goes hunting for... for trolls." The chief continued and Gobber turned to him as if offended.

"Trolls exist! They steal your socks." The blacksmith said defensively, tankard clattering due to his metal tooth.

"But only the left ones. What's with that?" Gobber added, a bit dark.

"When I was a boy..." Stoick started and Gobber shook his head. He knew what he was gonna do.

"Oh here we go." He grumbled as he tried to reach inside his tankard to get his metal tooth to no avail.

"My father told me to bang my head against a rock and I did it. I thought it was crazy, but I didn't question him." Stoick said as Gobber drank the rest of his drink and got his metal tooth.

"And you know what happened?" Stoick asked him.

"You got a headache." The blacksmith said as he hammered the metal tooth back into his gums.

"That rock split in two. It taught me what a Viking could do, Gobber. He could crush mountains, level forests, tame seas! Even as a boy, I knew what I was, what I had to become." Stoick said before he sat back down.

"Hiccup is not that boy." The chief said as if he's tired and exhausted but the concern and worry for his son was evident in his eyes.

"You can't stop him, Stoick. You can only prepare him." Gobber said and Stoick turned to him as the blacksmith looked at him with a serious gaze.

"Look, I know it seems hopeless. But the truth is you won't always be around to protect him. He's going to get out there again. He's probably out there now." Gobber told him as Stoick contemplated this as Gobber's words hit their mark.
