A strange reunion and a call to action

As Benja briefed Hiccup and Raya about the impending threat, Sisu got acquainted with a young baby Night Fury. The discovery of the baby dragon was a surprise to everyone, and it raised hopes of finding more of their kind. Sisu was amazed by the baby's cuteness and playfulness, and she couldn't resist spending time with it. The little dragon seemed to reciprocate Sisu's affection, which made everyone feel happy and hopeful for the future.

"Aw, look at you!" Sisu exclaimed as she got a look at the baby Night Fury. "You're adorable."

The baby Night Fury didn't seem to share Sisu's enthusiasm as it quickly hid behind Toothless for protection. Baby dragons this young aren't supposed to be too far from their parents, as they don't have the instincts to fight back or the strength to defend themselves. Toothless just happened to be one of the lucky surviving hatchlings, and even he was older than Yin was. It's rare for a young dragon to have survived on its own this long and this much.

"Sorry, she still needs to get used to others not hurting her," Toothless explained to her.

"It's alright, Toothless," Tong promised.

"I can't believe there are more Night Furies out there," Boun said with joy.

"Why don't we give them some space, guys?" Heather asked and gestured away from them. "Let Yin get used to Sisu, and see if we can go from there."

The commotion had died down and everyone had dispersed, leaving Toothless and Sisu alone with the frightened baby dragon perched on her back. Yin, the dragon who had warned them to stay away from Sisu, had also left the scene. Toothless and Sisu now stood in silence, pondering how to address the events of the previous night. The air was tense as they exchanged glances, each waiting for the other to speak up. Despite the awkwardness, they both knew that they needed to have an honest conversation about what had transpired.

"So, that kiss..." Sisu commented, trying to start a talk.

"Yeah, it was...different," Toothless confirmed this was odd. "I never really considered the idea of finding a mate. But I guess that those feelings were building up over the years being around you."

Sisu was a little surprised to see how easily he talked about it. "Yeah, well, I was asleep for 500 years and never really considered the idea either." She then leaned over and caressed her head against Toothless. "But if it was anyone, it was bound to be you."

Toothless expressed his contentment by purring softly as he affectionately nudged Sisu's shimmering mane with his nose. It was a heartwarming sight, as Toothless showed his love and appreciation for his friend Sisu, the last dragon, who reciprocated with a gentle nuzzle. Sisu looked up at Yin, who was still perched on Toothless' back, observing the exchange with curiosity. Sisu tried to appear as friendly as possible to Yin, and it seemed to work, as Yin slowly crawled up Toothless' head to approach Sisu. Sisu's eyes glimmered with a sense of trust as Yin purred and caressed herself over Sisu's face, establishing a bond between the two dragons.

"Aw, I knew we were gonna be good friends," Sisu said with a smile.

Hiccup found himself in a perplexing situation. He was standing face to face with a woman who claimed to be his mother. This was a woman who had supposedly died years ago, killed by dragons. Hiccup was struggling to process this information, feeling a mix of disbelief, confusion, and shock. He couldn't help but hyperventilate as his mind raced, trying to make sense of what was happening.

"I know," Valka tells Hiccup assuringly. "This...this is a lot to understand. But it is me."

"But..." Hiccup wasn't sure what to believe anymore. "You died! I was told that you were eaten by..." Then he started to put some things together as he looked around at all of the dragons surrounding them. "Dragons..."

"That was what I wanted Berk to believe," Valka admitted. "Are you beginning to understand?"

"Well, a little." Hiccup was guessing a bit about what really occurred rather than just her being eaten by dragons. "This is just...This isn't how I figured my day was going to go. It's not every day that my mother who was presumed dead shows up with a swarm of dragons."

Valka chuckled as she scratched the head of a Raincutter that was nearby. "Well, at least I am not boring. Right?"

Hiccup chuckled as he had to agree with her on that statement. "Well, I guess there is that one thing." He then looked over and noticed a few of the dragons around him had injuries. "You've been rescuing them," he added.

Valka asks, "Do you like it?"

"I...I don't know what to say," Hiccup stammered.

The silence in the cave was suddenly interrupted by the sudden squawking of a Nadder. Everyone turned to look toward the entrance, where the noise was coming from. In a flash, Raya appeared, riding on her Deadly Nadder, and landed gracefully on the ground. She unsheathed her sword and charged toward Valka and Hiccup with fierce determination. Valka managed to dodge Raya's attack just in time, and quickly retreated, leaving Hiccup behind. Raya rolled on the ground, and stood up, ready to shield Hiccup from any potential threat. The tension in the air was palpable as Raya and Valka faced off against each other, both ready for a fight.

Raya asked Hiccup, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Hiccup said as he looked toward the entrance. "Did you follow me?"

"Yeah, and who is she?" Raya asked, still not letting up on her defensive position.

"Uh...," Hiccup said, knowing this was going to be odd. "Raya, this is my mother, Valka."

Raya froze when she heard that and looked back at Hiccup. "I'm sorry, did you say 'mother'?" She looked over to Valka and then over to Hiccup, trying to wrap her head around the idea. "But...wasn't she-"

Hiccup said, "Supposed to be killed by dragons." He nodded. "Yep, I'm also waiting for some more explanation."

"Well, you might wanna wait for my Ba to show up," Raya muttered, gesturing to the entrance that she just came from. "I feel like he will want to hear about this as well."

"Hiccup, who is this?" Valka asks, approaching Raya in an almost animalistic manner. Which makes sense, considering she spent around 20 years surrounded by dragons.

"Mom, this is...Raya." Hiccup knew this was going to be awkward. "She's the Chief's daughter."

"Also his betrothed." Raya immediately dropped that bombshell on Valk.

Hiccup should have seen that coming and sighed. "Subtle, Raya."

And now before Valka could ask questions about what she was just told, Benja came flying in on Falcor and jumped as the Moldruffle landed on the ground. He looked between all three of them and wondered what had happened in the short time he was catching up.

"Hiccup, are you alright?" Benja asks the boy.

"Uh, I'll get back to you on that." Hiccup wasn't sure what he was feeling right now. He then looked to Valka and back to Benja. "Chief Benja. meet my mother."

Benja was shocked when he heard that and faced Valka. "Your mother?"

"Where has she been for all these years?" Raya wondered as she put her sword away. "You said that she was eaten by-"

"Dragons. Yeah." Hiccup nodded as he gestured to Valka. "I am waiting for an explanation on that."

Valka sighed and knew that she owed him that much. "Yes. You deserve much of an explanation." She then placed her staff against the ground and sighed. "Berk has always been a land of kill or be killed, but I believed that peace between us and dragons was possible. It was a very unpopular opinion." She paused for a moment before continuing. "One night, a dragon broke into our house, finding you in the cradle. I rushed to protect you, but what I saw... was proof of everything I believed." She seemed to become lost in her memory as the three of them listened. "This wasn't a vicious beast, but an intelligent, gentle creature, whose soul reflected my own." She took a deep breath. "But your father, bullheaded that he is, came in charging to protect us. You and your father nearly died that night, all because I couldn't kill a dragon."

Hiccup couldn't help but chuckle. "Yeah, that sort of thing seems to run in the family."

Valka then faced her son again and was a little curious. "So, how is it that you ended up out here? So far away from Berk?"

Hiccup chuckled and knew that this was going to be quite the tale. "Well, like I said, the unwillingness to kill a dragon is definitely in the blood. I... was the runt of Berk for the longest time. Dad didn't really help out with the torment I was put through, he just handed me to Gobber to train and hope that I would grow some muscle." Then he sighed as he caressed Cutter's back as she squawked over to Hiccup. "Well, then one night I happened to shoot down a Night Fury."

"A Night Fury?" Valka seemed shocked when she heard that and didn't seem to believe it. "No, I have seen many places, but I have never come across a Night Fury."

"Oh, no, he really did," Raya backed Hiccup up on that. "His name is Toothless."

"He is quite the delight." Benja nodded in confirmation.

Valka was amazed by this as she then eyed Hiccup. "But that doesn't explain how you ended here."

Hiccup nodded as he eyed his pegleg. "Yeah, I am getting to that part of the story." He then went on to the next part of the story. "I just saw him in the eyes and I came to the realization that I couldn't kill him. When I freed him, I learned that dragons weren't just mindless beasts and over time began to make a bond with Toothless. Then after some time, I thought that I could show the truth of dragons to everyone on Berk. But...it didn't turn out well."

"I attempted to do the same," Valka said as she approached her son and placed a hand on his shoulder, understanding that he was outcasted from Berk. She both could but could not believe that Stoick would do this. "Some people...we are just born different. We see things that others just don't wish to see."

As Valka held her son's cheek, she looked into his eyes and felt a wave of emotion wash over her. They had been apart for so long that they had missed out on each other's lives. The joy of finally being reunited was bittersweet, as they both realized how much they had missed out on. Raya felt a pang of regret for having to interrupt this tender moment, but they could not afford to waste time. The enemy was approaching, and they needed to prepare for war. They had to ensure that the lands were fortified and ready for the impending battle. Every moment counted, and they had to work together to ensure that they were ready to face their foes.

"Hey, sorry to interrupt," Raya said, interrupting the mother-son reunion. "But we don't know how long we have before the Hunters and others arrive."

Valka couldn't believe that slipped her mind, but reuniting with her son was something she just wasn't expecting today. "I am sorry, I came here to warn you about the upcoming invasion."

"Seems that Namaari already beat you to it," Benja tells her. Then he looked at his daughter. "Raya, go and see if the other Chiefs have arrived." He then looked to Hiccup and Valka. "Hiccup, we will warn the other lands of what is coming, and Namaari will have all the information we need. I think you earned to show your mother around Kumandra."

"You sure, Chief?" Hiccup asks.

"I insist," Benja tells him. "We will send a Terror message if we need you."

Hiccup then shrugged as he looked to Valka and couldn't wait to show his mother all that he had accomplished in Kumandra. "So, where should we go first?"

—————

As Hiccup and his mother were having their long-awaited reunion, they were completely oblivious to the fact that the ships carrying the Hunters and Drago were slowly making their way towards the shores of Kumandra. The dense forest that surrounded the lands made it impossible for the ships to dock any closer, and the dry and arid lands made it extremely difficult to travel any further. Drago, the cunning leader of the band of marauders, let out an angry growl as he saw the dense forest and realized that his crew would have to take the time to cut down several trees to set up a proper campsite on the land.

"Great. We have finally made it." Gobber said with a sigh. "Now what do we do?"

"We need to consider our plan of attack," Stoick said as he and Gobber approached a table where the other Chiefs were gathered. "If they have a dragon army here, then attacking them head-on would be too dangerous."

"Ugh, we have an armada," Dagur stated. "Why don't we just blow them up here and now?"

"If we attack them without knowing what kind of dragons we have, we could set off a much bigger threat among us," Alvin stated. "Honestly, should this boy really have a say at the grownup's table?"

"Hey!" Dagur quickly drew his sword and slammed it into the table. "I could easily turn my armada on you and your men!"

Alvin chuckled at the threat. "I would like to see you try, boy."

"Enough!" Stoick silenced all of them. That seemed to be enough to silence the whole table. "We will send a small team to investigate the area. Since that girl has escaped, we don't know if they are aware we are coming. We need to be sure."

"Who do you recommend we send out, Chief?" Gobber asks, currently using his hook to pick at his ear.

Stoick looked among the younger people they had brought with them. "Astrid can lead the group, Fishlegs is best qualified for identifying dragon species, and Snotlout could grab some of the materials that we're running low on. Firewood, for starters."

"Oh, no!" Dagur exclaimed as he quickly stood up. "I am not letting you just send out your own men out there. I am going with you." He then stabbed his dagger into the table. "I am the most qualified to kill dragons."

"They can handle themselves just fine against dragons," Stoick promised him.

"That wasn't a request." Dagur snarled. "I am going."

Stoick sighed and realized he wasn't going to get any other choice and just decided to let him go. It might be a bad idea, but keeping him on the ship with an armada of Berserkers was a much worse idea.

"As they approach closer, we will begin to set up our camp," Drago promised as he eyed the island. "The Dragon Conqueror will finally be mine."

————————

Valka strolled down the lively street of Heart, her eyes wide with wonder as she watched the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The joyful laughter of children filled the air as they played around with tiny, adorable baby dragons, each one as precious as the next. Her guide, Hiccup, proudly showed her around and she couldn't help but be impressed by his remarkable achievements in rescuing countless dragons from the cruel clutches of Vikings. As they walked, a strange creature came rolling over to them, and Valka couldn't contain her amazement at the sight of Tuk-Tuk, a resident of Kumandra. Hiccup greeted the excited creature and sent him on his way before they continued their exploration of the vibrant town.

"You managed all of this?" Valka asked as she was amazed by the sights.

"Yep. This is Heart. One of the five lands of Kumandra." Hiccup gave his mother the rundown history. "The others are Fang, Tail, Spine, and Talon. I've traveled to most of them while helping Raya deal with the Druun."

"What's a Druun?" Valka asks.

"That's...a complicated story." Hiccup wasn't sure where to go with that story. "Raya can tell it better. Anyway, turns out that they had their own dragons in this land. Some that we have never seen before around Berk. And they are special."

"Special how?" Valka wonders.

Then Hiccup noticed Toothless and Sisu were actually approaching and knew this would help. "You'll see."

Sisu was the first to arrive as Toothless was actually being more careful in flight with how he was now carrying Yin with him. When they landed near Hiccup, they noticed his mother but didn't know who she was.

"Hey, Hiccup. Was wondering where you were." Sisu said, causing Valka to jump back in shock. She never expected to hear a dragon talking.

"Yeah, that's something that I need to talk to you guys about." Hiccup said and looked over to Valka. "Sisu, Toothless, and...Yin...meet my mother."

Sisu and Toothless were shocked when they heard that as they looked over to Valka. Hiccup's mother was something they were all familiar with, but hearing that his mother was there, considering how she was supposed to be dead is shocking.

"Your mother?" Toothless asks.

"Yeah. She was aware of what these Hunters were planning and followed them here." Hiccup explained.

Valka was looking between the Night Fury and the talking dragon of Sisu and was not sure which one amazed her more. The creature that was supposed to be extinct, or the fact there was a dragon that was talking to her son.

"Uh, it is nice to meet you, Ms. Haddock." Sisu greeted her. "This is...quite the pleasure. I'm Sisu, a friend of Hiccup's."

Valka took a moment until she finally got over the shock of what she was looking at. "My, you are quite the astounding dragon. What kind of dragon are you?"

"They don't necessarily have the same aspects of ours." Hiccup explained to his mother. "They don't go by Boulder Class, Strike Class, or anything like that. They are simply dragons and go by their traits. Sisu is a water dragon."

"Which mainly means I am a naturally good swimmer." Sisu chuckled sheepishly at her own traits. "Not the best, especially compared to my siblings, but I still do what I can with it."

"And what she does with it usually annoys me," Toothless stated.

"Hey, watch it, after our talk earlier, I thought you would be a little nicer."

"It's my cynical comments that you like and I know it," Toothless stated as Yin crawled onto his head.

"Well, you are not wrong or right about that." Sisu knew the sarcasm was just how Toothless was.

"Is that..?" Valka was amazed to see the baby Night Fury. She slowly approached, knowing how to approach baby dragons at this point. "Can-can I?" She asks permission from Toothless who obliges and lets her try and get close to Yin. She reaches out to stroke Yin, who purrs at her touch. She inspects her talons as Yin rolls onto her back, nuzzling her. "Oh, look at how beautiful you are. She must be no more than a few months old."

"Yeah, we figured as much as when we found her on that Trapper ship." Hiccup chuckled. "She seems to finally be coming out of her shell after when we found her."

Valka was still playing with the baby Night Fury, a smile on her face as she nodded her head in approval of the tiny dragon's playful antics. Yin, Hiccup's own dragon, watched intently and began to mimic Valka's actions, bringing a grin to Hiccup's face. It was a moment he never thought he'd witness, his mother and dragon bonding in such a way. At that moment, Valka walked over to Hiccup, her eyes filled with emotion. She cupped his cheek and smiled, a bittersweet expression on her face. She had missed so much of her son's life, believing that staying away was the best course of action. But now, seeing the love and happiness in Hiccup's eyes, she realized that it was a mistake.

"To think, after all of this time, you've taken after me," Valka muttered in sorrow. "Will you give me another chance, Hiccup?"

Hiccup didn't even hesitate as he was indeed willing to give her another chance. "Yes."

Suddenly Valka shared an emotional embrace with her son. Hiccup was a little taken aback by the affection his mother showed but then quickly returned it. As they hugged, Hiccup felt a flood of emotions - relief, comfort, and a sense of belonging. It had been twenty long years since he had been separated from his mother, and the warmth of her embrace was a reminder of what he had missed out on. Despite being cast out from Berk by his father, Hiccup knew that he was not alone anymore. Even when he had Raya, there was a sense of belonging in the void, But now that his mother was here it was like the void was filled.

But this moment couldn't last forever. Their enemies were approaching, and they were going to need to be prepared. Chief Benja was making his way through the castle and made his way over to the table where he found the other chiefs of the lands were already waiting. Chief Namaari of Fang, Chief Ross of Spine, Dang Hai of Talon, and the new Chief of Tail after the last one's death (you know, the one who trapped herself in the cave about ten years ago?) Chief Patti. Raya was also there as she was one of the few people who knew most of their approaching enemies from the stories that Hiccup told her.

As the sun slowly sets on the horizon, the enemy dispatches a search party to scout the vast expanse of Kumandra's shores. With no clear idea of what they might encounter, the party ventures forth, bracing themselves for the unknown. But what they discover is beyond their wildest imagination, and has the potential to alter the course of their mission and the fate of their people forever.

The fate of Kumandra was hanging on the line...
