Magic Hair

Hiccup leads the way down their tunnel and lighted Inferno to see where they're going.

"It's a good thing I got this working." Hiccup comments on his weapon as they pass a skeleton with a sword sticking in it as he remembers what Rapunzel did for him. "Thanks. I didn't know you had that in you, what you did back there. That was brave of you."

"I know!" Rapunzel squeals happily and immediately calms down. "I know. So...Hiccup, where you from?" Rapunzel asks.

"That's a long story, and not really a nice one. But I'm getting a bit interested in your story." Hiccup admits. "I'm not supposed to mention the hair, I'm guessing."

"Nope."

"Or the mother. And frankly, I'm a little confused about the reptile." Hiccup admits.

"Chameleon." Rapunzel corrects him.

"Same difference." Hiccup says since he talks to his own overgrown reptile like her. "Here's my question, if you want to see the lanterns this badly, why haven't you left before?"

"Uh.." Rapunzel starts thinking of an answer when the ground starts shaking. "Hiccup?" She asks and they turn to see guards following them.

"Run. Run!" Hiccup tells her as they pick up her hair so she doesn't get caught on anything and run.

They make it out if the tunnel and find they're outside a dam for the place.

They look around and see there's a cave on the other end of the crater they could escape.

Rapunzel starts to come up with a plan and hands Hiccup the frying pan. "Hold this." She throws her hair and wraps it around a board and swings over.

Hiccup looks at the guards exiting the tunnel and he gets his sword out ready to fight these guys when Rapunzel throws her hair around his hand as he reaches for Inferno.

She pulls him away and Hiccup swings past all the guards.

"Ha! So long, suckers!" Hiccup cheers when he turns out for his stomach to get crushed by a board. "Ow."

Rapunzel looks and sees the guards break a piece of the dam to use as a board to get to her. Hiccup grabs her hair and uses it the same way she did for him.

"Come on, 'Punzel!" Hiccup tells her and she leaps into the air and swings to the ground where Hiccup joins her by going down the water pipes just as the entire dam starts coming apart.

"Run!" Hiccup tells her as the water comes and hits one of the rock pillars and it blocks their way out.

They go searching for a way out as the water starts filling in and notice that it's a dead end.

Hiccup ended up cutting himself with Inferno trying to light it back up, but it got wet, rendering it useless. He goes down under the water to try and find them a way out but it was nothing but darkness. "It's no use. I can't see anything."

Rapunzel tried herself and Hiccup brought her back up.

"It's no point, 'Punzel. It's complete darkness down there." Hiccup tells her as they start fearing what comes next.

"This is all my fault." Rapunzel says and starts tearing up. "She was right, I shouldn't have done this. I'm...I'm so sorry, Hiccup."

"Berk." Hiccup finally told her.

"What?" Rapunzel asks.

"Where I'm from, it's this place called Berk. You asked were I was from. Doubt you've ever heard of it; it snows for nine months and hails the other three there. I was cast out after I became friends with a Night Fury, my friend I told you I lost...he's a dragon." Hiccup explains where he's from to her and she's shocked to hear about a dragon. "They considered me a traitor, and if they found me, I might be sentenced to death at home. Which is why it's so hard for me to find a new home...nobody listens to the full story, just sees me as they saw me. A traitor."

Rapunzel smiles and moves some of her wet hair out of her face. "I have magic hair that glows when I sing." She confesses and Hiccup is surprised by that.

"What?" Hiccup asks.

Rapunzel thinks of what she just said and realizes it. "I have magic hair that glows when I sing!" She yells as the water reaches their faces. "Flower gleam and glow. Let your power shine..."

They both inhale one last breath as the cave flooded with water and Hiccup looks in shock as how her hair starts glowing, but recovers quickly as they look to see the water is exiting somewhere. A small pile of rocks blocking their way and they both start moving them to get free.

They get out of the exit and the three crawl out of the water onto the grass and gasp for air.

"We made it." Rapunzel says, getting up to collect her hair.

"Her hair glows." Hiccup whispers while getting up.

"We're alive. I'm alive!" Rapunzel cheers and grabs her frying pan and goes to get the rest of her hair out of the water.

"I didn't see that one coming." Hiccup says as he shakes out Inferno to dry it off while looking at Pascal.

"Hiccup?" Rapunzel call's out.

"Her hair actually glows." Hiccup keeps repeating to Pascal. "Why does her hair glow?"

"Hiccup!" Rapunzel call's him out and Hiccup looks to her fishing the rest of her hair out. "It doesn't just glow."

Pascal looks to Hiccup with a smug smile and Hiccup gets worried.

"Why is he smiling at me?" Hiccup asks.

Later, Hiccup has gotten a fire going as Rapunzel is wrapping his wound with her hair.

"So, you gonna explain exactly why you're wrapping your magic glowing hair around my injured hand?" Hiccup asks and winces at her wrapping too tight.

"Sorry. Just don't...don't freak out." Rapunzel begs of him and Hiccup is confused to why he would freak out. "Flower, gleam and glow. Let your power shine." She starts singing and Hiccup watches as the glowing starts from her head and travels throughout all of her hair. "Make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine." As the glowing passes Pascal, he points to his paw. "Heal What has been hurt. Change the fates design. Save what has been lost. Bring back what once was mine. What once was mine." She finishes singing and the glowing reached Hiccup's hand.

Hiccup unwraps his hand and looks in shock how his hand is healed and looks over it and sees its as if it never happened.

"Please don't freak out." Rapunzel begs of him and Hiccup is just more surprised than freaked out.

"I'm...I'm not freaking out. I'm just...surprised. How long has your hair been able to do that?" Hiccup wonders, seriously confused where this type of magic came from.

"Forever, I guess." Rapunzel tells him with a shrug. "Mother says when I was a baby, people tried to cut it. They wanted to take it for themselves." She then moves some of her hair and shows a dark short part of her hair. "But once it's cut, it turns brown and looses its power. A gift like that, it has to be protected. That's why Mother never let me..."

"That's why you never left that tower." Hiccup realizes and is confused who would want to live that way. He was stuck on Berk for years, being told to stay inside, safe. And that was the worst years of his life. "And you're still going back?"

"No!" Rapunzel says and considers her options. "Yes? It's complicated." She admits and puts her head in her hands as Pascal comforts her at her feet when Rapunzel tries to change the topic. "So, Berk, huh?"

"Oh, well...like I said, it's a long story. It's a really backwater place. I'll spare you the sob story of the scrawny fish bone once known as Hiccup Haddock." Hiccup says and Rapunzel moves closer, interested. "Berk...it has problems. It's twelve days north of hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death. It's located on a solidly on the meridian of misery. My village was, in a word, sturdy. It's been there for about seven generations, but all the buildings are new. We had fishing, hunting and a charming view of the sunsets. The biggest problem would be the dangers. Most places would have mice, mosquitoes. We had...dragons. Most people would leave, but not us, we're Vikings. Stubornish issues. During a raid, I shot Toothless, the deadliest of all dragons down. Nobody believed me so I went to look for him by myself, and I found him tied up in ropes by an invention I made. I was gonna kill him...but then I looked in his eyes and I saw myself. I saw that he was just as scared as I was, so I let him go. He bounced on me and I thought he was going to kill me, but he let me live. Unfortunately, the crash damaged his tail, so I had to make him a prophetic tailfin that I need to control in order for him to fly. We had a little bumpy start, but we eventually became best friends." He explains and shows her the pieces of the prosthetic tail that he found on their way here in his bag.

"Wait, if the people there killed dragons, wouldn't that mean that they would kill your friend as well?" asked Rapunzel a little frightened.

"Without a doubt." Hiccup agrees. "Especially since he's a Night Fury and to Vikings, the Night Fury is also known as the unholy offspring of lighting and death itself."

"But why didn't you kill him? You would've been the greatest among your people." asked Rapunzel.

"I just couldn't do it. If I did, I'd never forgive myself. Besides, I already was famous in my own way." Hiccup said in a hurt tone and tears started to form in his eyes.

"Really? Why?" Rapunzel asked and Hiccup couldn't take it anymore, and got off the log.

"Because of being me! Look at me." He says and gets up while gesturing to himself. "Vikings are supposed to be big with a lot of muscles, but I'm not. I was small, weak and only recently started growing some muscles. I was bullied, called names, tormented for years. Everybody called me 'Hiccup the Useless'. My father didn't care about me. He didn't let me out of the house because I was a walking disaster of nature to everyone. I wanted to prove myself so bad that I can be one of them. I asked my father to give me a chance, but he refused. But everything changed when I met Toothless. When I let him go, I realized that I couldn't and would never hurt a dragon, but just then my father decided to grant me my wish and put in dragon training with the other teens. I pleaded for him not to make me take it, but it failed."

"What's more important for a father than to look after his son?" asked Rapunzel.

"Taking care of the village since he's the chief," said Hiccup as he sat back down. "They say when my dad was a baby, he dislocated a dragon's head off its shoulders. Do I believe that? Yes. I got at the top of the class in dragon training, but I didn't hurt any of the dragons. I used tricks I learnt from Toothless, and when I was chosen to kill the Monstrous Nightmare, I knew that I couldn't do it."

"So you ran away since you couldn't kill the Nightmare?" Rapunzel puts together.

"Not quite. I ran away so I could protect Toothless," Hiccup explains and sighs. "They found out about him when he came in to rescue me from the Nightmare, that's when I was deemed a traitor. So I left, and have been traveling everywhere for the last two years. And yet they've been the best years of my life. I've gone everywhere and anywhere I wanted. Well, me and Toothless of course."

"Sounds amazing." Rapunzel smiles and the two smile at each other for a minute when Hiccup gets up again.

"I'm gonna get some more firewood." He says and picks up Inferno as he walked off.

"Hey." Rapunzel call's out and Hiccup faces her. "For the record, I think Hiccup Haddock isn't as useless as everyone says he is. After all, he did save my life."

Hiccup smiles at her. "You'd be the first. So, thank you." He says and walks off into the forest.

Rapunzel smiles, not noticing Gothel behind her who has slowly began to re-age, and she knows if she doesn't heal herself soon, her real age will be revealed and she could die.

"Well, I thought he'd never leave." Gothel says and Rapunzel faces her mother. "Hello, dear."

Rapunzel starts stammering nervously as Pascal camouflaged himself. "How did you find me?" She asks as her mother hugs her.

"Oh, it was easy, really. I just listened for the sound of complete and utter betrayal and followed that." Gothel says.

"Mother..." Rapunzel tries saying when she interrupts her.

"We're going home, Rapunzel. Now!" Gothel says and starts dragging her away.

"You don't understand. I've been on this incredible journey, and I've seen and learned so much." Rapunzel tells her. "I even met someone."

"Yes, the wanted man. I'm so proud." Gothel replies sarcastically. "Come on." She then starts dragging her off.

"Mother, wait, I think...I think he likes me." Rapunzel tells her.

"Likes you? Please, Rapunzel, that's demented!" Gothel stated.

"But, Mother..."

"This is why you never should have left. Dear, this whole romance that you've invented just proves you're too naïve to be here. Why would he like you? Come on now, really. Look at you! You think that he's impressed?" Gothel sings and waves her hair around. "Don't be a dummy, come with mummy. Mother..."

"No!" Rapunzel stops her, determined not to leave.

"No? Oh, I see how it is. Rapunzel knows best. Rapunzel's so mature now. Such a clever grown up miss. Rapunzel knows best. Fine, if you're so sure now. Watch you'll see. Trust me, my dear. That's how fast he'll leave you. I won't say I told you so! No, Rapunzel knows best. So, if he's such a dream boat, go and put him to the test. If he's lying, don't come crying. Mother knows best." She then disappears with a wave of her cape.

"So, can I ask you something?" Hiccup asks as he returns with Inferno lighting his way back. "There aren't any like...side effects to the whole magic hair thing, right?" He wonders when he notices her flushed. "You okay, 'Punzel?"

"Oh! Sorry, yes. Just lost in thought, I guess." Rapunzel says and Hiccup leaves it be and takes a seat to tell her another story.

"So, there was this one place I visited, me and Toothless had been flying for a long while when we stumbled on this strange little forested island we had never seen before. We figured it beat flying over the ocean, so we went down to check it out and to get some rest."

As he talked, Rapunzel sits down to listen to his story, getting curious.

"It seemed a nice enough place, perfect for exploring and maybe just the place we needed to stay at for some time. It had this really lush forest, all these waterfalls...I wanted to see everything! I always keep my journal handy for any notable wildlife, but this forest was oddly empty aside from a few squirrels and a deer or two. The most interesting thing I found was this place where the trees cleared out to lead into a rock cave, where there were some weird-looking runes in the stone. They were in this..." He gestured around, having a hard time describing them. "In this language neither Toothless nor I could make heads or tails of, but they looked like they'd been scrambled on there pretty frantically."

"Frantically? Maybe that was a warning to leave?" Rapunzel took a guess.

"Ah, they looked pretty old," Hiccup said, waving a hand dismissively. "We figured whatever urgent matter these rune-people were scribbling about had probably been dealt with a long time ago. So we kept walking through the forest, when we heard it..."

"Heard what?" Rapunzel wonders.

"The sound of a thousand voices singing in this choir. It had to be the prettiest noise I'd ever heard, let me tell you. And I thought wow, if there's some mystical village on this island with lovely maidens who can hit all of their notes just right, by the gods I'm going to find it! I mean, how many people can go and say they've tracked down some singing village? Besides this place. Well, Toothless and I weren't about to miss out on that chance. So off we went!"

"So what happened, then?" Rapunzel eyed him anxiously.

"Well, we kept going toward it in this sort of daze...it just sounded so amazing! But then, all of the sudden, it just stops. Toothless immediately freaked out and ran the other way before I could ask him what was going on. I don't know what his problem was, but I wanted to figure out who was making all this stellar choir music, so I kept going toward where I had heard it from."

"So you kept going toward the creepily perfect music when you had the option not to?" Rapunzel asked with a smirk look.

"Hey, I was curious!" he replied as a defense.

"Oh no," she whimpered. "This couldn't have ended well."

"So I keep going for a ways, and the forest thins out into this rocky clearing. But one look around this little rockpile, and I can tell something's not right. There's all these shiny, golden blobs lying around, and the sun's glinting off of them in such a way that I can't really see what they are. But I get a bit of a closer look, and I realize...they're all dragons. And other woodland creatures, all strewn across the clearing and trapped in solid amber."

Rapunzel's and Pascal's eyes widened. "What? But how?"

Hiccup smirked. "Well, I'm getting to that. All of the sudden, the singing started up again, and this time it was loud. I started looking around, wondering where a full choir could be hiding when there was absolutely no sign of civilization anywhere close by. Well, unless you count those weird runes, anyway. But then, there's this flash of bright blue and orange and I see these two multicolored wings and I realize it wasn't a choir I heard at all. It was...a dragon!"

Rapunzel and Pascal gasp, shocked and Pascal hides in Rapunzel's hair.

"Well, I barely had time to process what was happening before the big dragon saw me, and his mouth opened right up and a big sticky golden glob shot out! Landed right on top of me in a gross mess, and before I could even make a noise to convey how unhappy I was about this, it hardened up and I couldn't get out!"

"Oh no," Rapunzel gasped. "Just like the other dragons!?"

"Exactly! And then the big guy began swooping down, planning on picking me up in my amber shell and devouring me whole, when who should show up but—"

"Toothless!" Rapunzel interjected excitedly.

Hiccup smiled. "You got it! Here he comes, bursting out of the woods, roaring and blasting everywhere! He shoots a ball of plasma at this amber that was attached to me, and it melts right off. You can bet I was out of there before the creepy siren dragon could catch up!"

"So what happened with the creepy siren dragon?" Rapunzel asked.

"Well, when Toothless came back, I covered his ears with moss to block out the song. Clever trick, anyways, we decide we're going to play a little trick on this guy. I jump on Toothless and we get him following us into the air. We fly around the island until we found a nice big cave, and in we all went! Mind you, he's still trying to use his siren charms on us, but Toothless can't hear a thing."

"But wouldn't he just corner you in there?" Rapunzel asked, furrowing her brow in confusion, remembering what happened to them recently.

"Aha, you would think, but not this dragon! You see, as we got further and further inside, the dragon's song started echoing off the walls, magnified to be about five times as strong. Toothless still couldn't hear anything, but the other dragon...oh boy, did he hear something! The hypnosis music coming from the cave walls that he just had to get to! We left him in there in this confused daze, trying to go to the noise that he never realized was just the echo of his own musical bellowing. But after we were out of the cave, we got off of that island real fast after blocking the entrance so he couldn't escape! And that is the story of how I caused a deadly predatory dragon to hypnotize himself." Hiccup finishes his story.

"That is incredible." Rapunzel smiles.

Hiccup smiles at her and sees he's staring and it's getting late. "Well, I have more stories but maybe for another time." He tells her and they get ready to sleep.
