Epilogue: Neither and Both
*Virgil POV*
The school year has finished. I did manage to graduate, with the help of some lying about why I was gone and extra hard work.
The school year ended the same way it started. With a song and me questioning my sanity.
The Lights and I walked into the cafeteria. J-Dee was yelling at a girl and her group. It was Grace. Actually, they were both yelling. It looked like J-Dee was winning. Eventually, he put his foot down and stood on top of one of the tables.
"Listen up folks, war is over. Brand new sheriff's come to town. We are done with acting evil, we will lay our weapons down. We're all damaged, we're all frightened. We're all freaks but that's alright. We'll endure it, we'll survive it. Virgil, are you free tonight?" J-Dee sang.
I looked up at him. Was he really asking me this? After everything?
"Yeah, but-" I said.
"Cause I need to apologize. And my boss- the person making me do it all fired me. So, I was wondering, if you weren't doing anything tonight, maybe we could pop some Jiffy Pop and rent a video, something with a happy ending," He said.
I nodded.
"As long as you promise to never do it again," I said.
"I can't promise no more Heathers. Our school may not ever end. Still, I miss you, I'd be honored, if you'd let me be your friend~"
"Friends," I said.
And then I sang. I really hope I don't have to in high school.
"We can be seventeen, we can learn how to chill. If no one loves me now, someday somebody will. We can be seventeen. Still time to make things right. One day we'll change the world~" We both sang.
Roman, Patton, and Logan, who I still call the Lights, also joined in the song.
"But let's kick back tonight. Let's go be seventeen. Take off our clothes and dance. Act like we're all still kids, cause this could be our final chance! Always be seventeen. Celebrate you and I. Maybe we won't grow old~" J-Dee and I sang as the Lights sang,
"And you know, you know, you know... We can be beautiful. You know, you know, you know... Cause this could be our final... You know, you know, you know... We can be beautiful. You know, you know, you know..."
"And maybe then we'll never die, we'll make it beautiful. We'll make it beautiful. Beautiful..."
I never did find out why this school had a tendency to break into song, and how music was always playing at the right times. Or why almost everyone is crazy. But I at least found four semi-sane people. Remus doesn't count, he's crazy. But in a different way then Grace, Jason, and their groups.
After school, J-Dee apologized to me and we went over to his house, where Remus was waiting. I was glad to have my other friends back, and maybe one day they could all get along.
"J-Dee, I have one question," I said.
"Yeah?" He asked.
"Why were you with Grace in the first place? What leverage did she have that made you do those things?"
He looked a little uncomfortable. So Remus answered.
"Money. Power. Real threats on our life," He said, "The usual,"
I still have no idea what the 'normal' or 'usual' is for these people. I guess I'll find out at some point.
"Ah. Well, in that case, let's hope someone either pulls a JD or Regina George on her," I say.
They both nod in agreement. We turn out attention back to the movie. Ironically enough, it was The Princess Bride.
Song: Seventeen (Reprise) From Heathers, the musical. This book has been a ride, one that I definitely enjoyed. But yeah, it's over. And I know this chapter was really short. But I hope you enjoyed reading this story, and feel free to leave any final thoughts or feedback in the comments. Have a wonderful day/night you magnificent peep!
