Chapter 1: Mean Girls or Heathers?

I just moved to Midwest. My name is Virgil Sanders and today is my first day at North Sky Middle School. I am not excited in the least.

I pack my lunch and backpack. I look in the mirror and decide to touch up my eyeshadow. Is it too extra? Not enough? I don't want to be noticed but I want people to avoid me. I've found that putting on a dark persona is the best way to get anyone's guard up. And if their guard is up, they'll back off and away from me, saving me from social interaction.

I doubt I'll avoid everyone on my first day, though. Teachers seem to think its a good idea to shove me up in front of the class and make me talk about myself. Which is the last thing I want to do. The less people know about me, the better.

---

I walk into the cafeteria. All the tables are full. I have nowhere to sit, and I'd rather not eat lunch in the bathroom on my first day. I see two kids at a table. The table is small, it looks like it can only fit four kids, max. No one seems to be around these guys, so I figure they are either really popular or not at all. They gesture for me to sit down.

"Hi, I'm J-Dee. I see you're the new kid?" One says.

He has a bowler hat, bright yellow eyes, and what looks like a burn scar on part of his face. I nod. My guard is up, I've learned not to trust anyone immediatly.

"I'm Remus. Care for a stick?" The other asks me, handing me a bar of deodorant.

I shake my head. Ew. He's wearing a black shirt with a green sword on it. He also has a streak of white in his hair.

"You don't talk much, do you?" Remus observes.

I shake my head again. I don't like talking, especially to new people. But these guys seem ok. My social anxiety will tell me otherwise later.

"Well then, I'm going to call you Anxiety, because you look really anxious," J-Dee says.

I nod. Fine by me. I honestly don't care what these guys call me.

"So, Anx," Remus says, "You're new here. We should warn you,"

I give him a puzzled look as if to say 'about what?'. He understands and they elaborate.

"This school is full of jerks, manipulative liars, and brats. You see those three guys over there?" J-Dee says, pointing to a table with three boys, "They are like a cross between the Heathers and the Plastics,"

Oh great. I hope no one just randomly bursts into song. But I guess it's time to see how accurate the musicals are.

"That tall one is the leader. Think Regina George, but with Chandler's rudeness and power. Can't fall, he's too high for that," Remus says, a bit a venom in his voice.

I wonder what happened to make him hate that guy so much. The one he's referring to is tall, with styled brown hair. He wears a white coat with a red undershirt. His coat looks similar to a letterman's jacket and has a small crown symbol on it.

"His name is Roman Prince. Acts like one too," He says.

"The other two are pretty mindless. That one in the tie is Logan Smith. More similar to Duke, he has almost no personality. But he's probably one of the smartest kids here. He knows everything about everyone, whether you want him to or not," J-Dee continues, "Which makes him like Gretchen Weiners,"

The one he points to, Logan, has slicked-back hair, glasses, and a stern expression on his face. He wears a dress shirt and tie. Probably bends at Roman's will. I'm guessing he's second in command or something.

"The last one is Patton Newland. He's more like Karen Smith, as he's pretty dumb and cheery. But he'd probably do anything for Roman. So you should stay away from them because they're trouble," Remus says.

I nod. This is going to be just like my last school. I just hope I don't get bullied as much. At least I only have a year here, then I'll be in high school. Things might get better than.

"But Patton is probably the nicest of the bunch. Roman's nicer to him though, like Chandler is to Macnamara," J-Dee adds.

"They have some pretty crazy requirements to sit with them," J-Dee says, "One example is that you have to bring different traits to the table, but if you're too weird then no. I think Roman is Creativity. Which is funny, considering he's pretty much a carbon cut out of two characters,"

I snort a bit. They smile. I try to ignore the irony that this guy is judging them for being like characters from musicals when his name is literally 'J-Dee'.

"We call those three the Light Sides~" J-Dee half-sings.

"They're bright but fake and hard," Remus continues.

Those aren't the lyrics but ok.

"They play their little mind games~"

"All around the schoolyard~"

"They might insult your clothing~"

"Or make fun of your name~"

"Like they mocked Emile Picani until he burst out in flame~"

Remus leans in and whispers,

"And Mr. Picani was the school psychologist,"

Yeah, there is no way I am going near the Light Sides. Then they change their tune.

"Everyone'd like to be their boyfriend," Remus says.

"That won't be beautiful~," Janus says.

"If you sit at their table, guys will notice you,"

"Kinda beautiful~"

"Everyone wants them to be nicer,"

"So beautiful~"

"Y'know, I'd like to kidnap one and-" Remus says.

"I think that's enough," J-Dee cuts in.

Ok, so I guess people do break out into song here. I swear, if they start dancing I will lose it. They continue to discuss the Light Sides. When we get back to their lunch table requirements, Remus says,

"We have only one requirement. You can't betray us. We think that's pretty fair,"

I nod. I won't betray the only nice-ish people here. This is the friendliest anyone's ever been to me. But I still keep my guard up, they could be trying to lure me in.

"Oh, Anx, one question, are you ok with gays?" J-Dee asks.

I nod. I had a boyfriend last year. He dumped me for someone 'better'. I'm pretty sure he just got sick of me.

"Good, cause..." J-Dee says, kissing Remus.

Ok, they're dating. Cute.

---

A full week goes by. Finally, on Friday, I decide to talk.

"So anyway, I told him, 'That's a nice shirt, but you should still go stick it up your butt because then it'll smell better,'" Remus says.

J-Dee laughs. I snicker too. Remus takes a big bite out of his deodorant. I still have no idea if it's fake or not.

"Hey, do you guys want any?" Remus asks, pulling out another two bars.

"Yes," J-Dee says.

I take a deep breath.

"Sure, why not?" I say, grabbing a bar.

They both stare at me before J-Dee finally says,

"So you can talk! I was beginning to think you couldn't,"

I smirk.

"I can't and don't like to. You guys are going to be my exception," I say.

"Sweet!" Remus says, "I'm the exception for most things. Are you sure you don't want any, J?"

"I said no,"

"Actually, you said yes," I say.

"Eh, yes, no, there's no big difference," J-Dee shrugs.

I grin.

"So I've been meaning to ask this," Remus says, "Why do you dye your hair purple?"

"Edgy," Is the only response I get.

"Ok well, how do you do it, because we've been thinking of dying ours green and yellow," J-Dee says.

"I got some dyes. I can show you how to do it on Monday. We can skip the cafeteria," I say.

"Deal. I hate this place," Remus says.

Ok, so I know I already have three other ongoing stories, but too bad, this one's joining the group. So because of that, I might not update this one every day, but possibly every other day, and most likely multiple times a week. Thoughts and feedback in the comments are welcome and I hope you have a wonderful day/night you magnificent peep!
